The prognosticator has been on a good roll early in the season. Pitfalls dot the schedule this week, as several tight games loom. Many area teams are showing they will be a threat down the road in district and playoff games.
The choices are close this time around, and teams that make fewer mistakes will be the big winners. Here are the selections for this week.
n Lincoln East 24, Columbus 20: Discoverers are a quality football team. A long history of tough losses in the Capital City makes the Spartans a narrow pick here. The Maroon played great in all phases of the game a week ago.
n Lakeview 22, Scotus 19: This is the pick for the Game of the Week. The Vikings are a close pick in this game. The winner will likely be the district champion. The Shamrocks can win, but physical play makes the Vikes my choice on the home field.
n Schuyler 42, North Bend 18: The Warriors light up the scoreboard in a big win over the Tigers. Schuyler has the ability to put a great deal of points on the board.
n Boone Central 24, Central City 21: The Cardinals win another contest in the final moments. The Bison have their best team in many years, but BC has too much tradition to overcome.
n David City 27, Centennial 25: The Scouts hold on in a nailbiter. The Broncos must get a big game from the defense, but David City just slips past them in this game.
n Wisner-Pilger 38, Twin River 23: The Gators win over the Titans. Twin River has an opportunity if they can keep the ball out of a big-play W-P offense's hands.
n Aquinas 14, Cross County 13: Another great game will come down to which team has the ball last. The Cougars are 3-0, but the Monarchs are prepared to rise to the challenge.
n Burwell 30, Fullerton 18: The Longhorns show their strength against the Warriors. Fullerton will need a couple of turnovers to turn this game around.
n Howells 39, Lyons-Decatur NE 12: The Bobcats cage the Cougars. Howells will continue to go as far as its defense will take it as it moves deeper into the season.
n Scribner-Snyder 22, Osceola 8: The Trojans win a defensive battle over the Bulldogs. Osceola could pull off a surprise if it limits its mistakes in this game.
n Clarkson 40, Leigh 14: The Red Devils lost a very tight game in a big contest at Dodge. This week, Clarkson is able to open up the offense against a young Panther squad.
n St. Francis 26, High Plains 18: Both teams come into this game undefeated, but only the Flyers will remain that way. The Storm will need to contain the Flyers' big-play ability in the kicking game to win.
n Shelby 34, Humphrey High 20: The Huskies keep the Bulldogs in check. Shelby has done a good job early in the season of establishing a solid running game.
n Newman Grove 25, Osmond 20: The Bluejays play a physical game on both sides of the ball in a win over the Tigers. Newman Grove will need a big defensive effort for four quarters to get the “W.”
n Holy Family 52, Rising City 20: The Bulldogs have too many weapons for the Terriers to keep up with. Holy Family will use a familiar recipe of good defense and solid running backs for this victory.
n Dodge 41, St. Edward 15: The Pirates may be one of the best teams in all of eight-man football. The Beavers will find out just how talented they are in this contest.
n Last week: 14-2 (.875)
n Season: 46-8 (.852)
Until next week, I'll call 'em as I see 'em.
