COLUMBUS - Even before the final scores were tallied, the Lakeview boys golf team was hitting the driving range trying to work out the kinks from its dual against Scotus Central Catholic.
The Shamrocks used consistency for a 169-176 victory in their season-opening dual Thursday at Quail Run Golf Course. Even though the Vikings' Greg Pohlmann posted the best score with a one-over-par 37, Scotus turned in the next four best scores to lock up the victory.
“I was impressed with how the kids came in and most the them felt they didn't play well,” Lakeview coach Ryan Specht said. “That was great to see because it shows they care where they are at, and they want to get better. ”
Mitch Bierbower paced the Shamrocks with a nine-hole score of 41. Nick Daley and Austin Kuta each posted 42s, while Rob Baer carded a 44. Tony Zakrzewski rounded out the scores with a 46.
Scotus coach Sean Wickham said the rounds were in step with the numbers the Shamrocks posted during practice.
“The nice thing is we have been out to play and are feeling pretty comfortable,” Wickham said. “For the most part it's the way the season is going to be - mostly mid to low 40s - and hopefully someone can break through to the 30s.”
The victory for the Scotus was the first against its crosstown rival in head-to-head boys competition this school year. Lakeview prevailed in football, basketball and soccer. The Shamrocks defeated Lakeview in cross country during a triangular, but the Vikings edged out Scotus for the final state berth.
Also, the 169 team score nearly matched Scotus' best dual score from last season on its first time out.
“We were right around 170 and 172 last year in the duals we had,” Wickham said. “I think with the nice weather helps. and hopefully we can improve upon it and get better throughout the season.”
After Pohlmann's score, Victor Bohrer and Tommy Dornish came in with rounds of 46. Brandon Lundberg was one stroke back, while Jon Hoadley fired a 50.
In junior varsity action, Lakeview's Eric Nelson took top honors with a 45. Andy Biermann carded a 53 to lead the Scotus JV.
The Shamrocks will square off against Humphrey St. Francis on Monday before meeting up with Lakeview again on Tuesday at the Lincoln Pius X Invitational.
