I moved into a place that the renters had cats and dogs. There is still a smell and I was wondering if there was a way that I might be able to get rid of the smell. We took up the carpet and have washed the walls and mopped the floor. Thank you for your help
Anonymous

Pet odor is a difficult problem. Removing the carpet was the right thing to do. If the odor still persists you may have have to clean and seal the floor. It may also be helpful to ozone the area. It can just be a process of elimination to get to the solution.

I have heard of problems with sewers backing up in basements where I live. If that happens, do I have to replace everything or can you fix the damage?
Anonymous

Sewage is referred to as "black" water. Category 3 "black" water always contains pathogenic agents. Sewage or other water contaminant sources entering a structure has the likelihood of causing discomfort or sickness if exposed to humans. It contains dangerous chemicals or medical wastes. We would do an evaluation for salvageability - consider direct contact with category 3 water, porosity, material value and other factors. Sewage-saturated carpet and pad, without exception, should be removed. We recommend removal and disposal of sewage saturated absorbent materials such as ceiling tiles, books, etc. When it is deemed cost justifiable to restore, we would sanitize carefully and employ the hot water extraction cleaning method. If sewer backup enters your home you should have a professional evaluation.

The people that lived in our house before had a couple of cats and a couple of dogs. There is a smell in the basement, we have tried everything to get rid of it, the floor is tile as we pulled up all the carpet. Thank you
Anonymous

It is not completely clear if you found tile under the carpet or is you have re-tiled the floor folowing carpet removal; however we would recommend that you clean and seal the hard surface floor.

We had a leaky roof, and had it repaired. Should I be worried about water damage coming through?
Anonymous

We assume that you had a reputable roofer who would be aware of potential water damage when he repaired your roof. However if he may have overlooked that we recommend you keep a close watch on the area for potentional mold growth.. Your roof area had a source of water It has low air movement and possibly enough light thru the vents to promote growth.

How often should I get my carpets cleaned? Also, is there anything that can be sprayed on them to make them more stain resistant?
Anonymous

Carpet mills recommend every 12-18 months. It is advisable to check warranty specifications on new carpeting. Carpet proptectant can be applied after cleaning to make carpets more stain resistant. Normally protectant should be re applied after each professinal cleaning.

Should I be worried about mold that grows in our toilet or anywhere we have standing water? How do I know if it is dangerous?
Anonymous

Mold is a delicate issue. It does not routinely grow on toilets that have consistent use... perhaps you are seeing another type of deposit that is not mold. Any mold that is on a non-porous surface may be wiped off with a detergent. If mold exists on a porous surface as wood, drywall, concrete, carpet etc. is should be professional remediated.

I recently painted my bedroom and spilled about 1 1/2 cups of blue latex paint on my white carpet. I got most of the stain out, but the carpet is now dry. Is there anything else that I should do?
Sue

As with all spills it is safe and recommended to clean up with clear water and white terry cloth towels. Blot the area and do not rub. Continue until no transfer. If at that time there is still evidence of the spill you can try mineral spirits which is primarily safe; however pre test on a non conspicuous area for color fastness. If spot still remains you should contact a professional carpet cleaner who would have further options to remove the spot.
