COLUMBUS -- After beginning his career on YouTube and making guest appearances on television, local teen Lucas Cruikshank is starring in his own feature film: “Fred: The Movie.”
The 16-year-old Cruikshank returned to his Columbus home last week after filming wrapped up in Los Angeles Dec. 20 following a two-month shoot.
The movie, expected for release in 2010, follows Fred Figglehorn, a fictional character created by Cruikshank in 2006, as he tries to track down his crush, Judy, played by British pop singer and actress Pixie Lott.
Cruikshank said the movie will feature the hyperactive, high-pitched, tantrum prone 6-year-old who will no longer be confined to his neighborhood. Set in the Midwest, the film will contain a few winks to his home state of Nebraska, and he hopes a premiere will be held in the state.
Digging a hole from his backyard to Judy’s, fantasizing about an invisibility suit, getting lost in the woods and becoming buried in sand are just a few of the adventures Fred will experience along his journey.
As well as being the lead, the Teen Choice Award winner also is listed as a producer of the movie, having been involved in the project from conception through filming.
“Fred: The Movie,” was written by David A. Goodman, an executive producer of “Family Guy,” with Brian Robbins (“Norbit,” “Varsity Blues”) as director and producer.
Cruikshank’s ” and Fred’s ” appeal, especially among tweens, has led to the Fred channel becoming one of the most successful channels on YouTube. The Fred channel has more than 1.5 million subscribers and received 72 million channel views and more than 414 million video views, which includes 4.3 million views of Fred’s “Christmas is Creepy” video posted earlier this month.
While Cruikshank has made guest appearances on popular kid shows, such as
“Hannah Montana” and “iCarly” and worked with stars such as Tim Robbins and Kevin Nealon, he said his first time on a movie set was overwhelming, but the presence of his older sister, Stephanie, 21, helped him settle down.
Stephanie, a cosmetologist at Loxx Salon, was on the set to work on the hair of actors and actresses in the movie, including the star.
Cruikshank described the experience as really fun, but exhausting. After being on set from 6:30 a.m.-5 p.m. six days a week, 7.5 hours filming and three hours of schooling, he was looking forward to returning to his family home, spending time with his parents and seven siblings and taking a few days to unwind before pursuing further ventures.
“Fred” merchandise is currently sold at specialty retailers, and the potential for an animated series and comic book have been discussed, Cruikshank said, but he is leery of overexposing Fred and being type-cast as an actor.
Because of his popularity, other movie opportunities have been presented to Cruikshank, but have yet to pass muster with his parents, who are very involved in his career.
One script depicted the character smoking weed, which was immediately nixed by his mom, and Cruikshank said he has been approached by many energy drink companies to advertise on the Fred channel, but he declined due to his mother’s opposition.
Cruikshank said he hopes the success of “Fred: The Movie” will open more doors for his acting career, and his dream project would be to work with Jim Carrey, another actor known for his over-the-top, high energy performances.
While he enjoys comedy roles, he said he would like to try his hand at drama, but for the time being he is just taking advantage of the down time and being a normal teenager. He said he was “really glad to come back for Christmas.”
As for what the future holds, he said: “I am just taking it day by day.”

Congratulations Lucas! It is nice to see the teenagers of this town doing something productive. You are a great role model for the children in this area. I would love to see you visit a few of the schools and explain to the students how you got all of this started, in hopes to inspire them to follow their own dreams.Good Luck

Good luck to you Lucas. Altough I have never seen you on YouTube as your "Fred" character, it's refreshing to see a teenager actually following their dreams. Also, it's great to have the family support as you seem to have. I wish you the best!reScott

Scott, you missed something (I think) Fred is for younger kids, like 8-12 year-olds. All of the movies and t-v shows are neither designed for my taste or YOURS. Don't bash Lucas, he's evidently a talented young man.

Congratulations Lucas on making your dreams come true! You're a great kid who is really going places. I read about this in the New York Times a few weeks ago and I'm very excited to see someone from our hometown represent Nebraska. Keep doing what you love and doing what you love. As you probably already know, there will always be "haters", but everyone in life has these people who dislike them. The difference is not everyone gets articles written about them and a popular internet show where it's easy for people to hide behind their computer screen and type what they want. You're a well adjusted teenager who is sticking to his values, and I admire that. Congrats again on making so many kids laugh, putting smiles on people faces, and having the guts to do what you love, no matter what others think. Now that's something to be proud of.To Scott: What Lucas is doing takes talent, not just taking a camera and "acting like an idiot". That's why Hollywood took notice and that's why he is going places. Do you enjoy making fun of a 16 year old boy? Does that make you feel superior? Well guess what, your opinion isn't going to stop him. Also, FRED isn't on TV it's going to be a movie.

Personally, Fred doesn't fit my entertainment needs. However, I would like to personally congratulate Lucas for all the hard work he has put forth and the success he has achieved. It's nice to see someone local to make it in the Hollywood scene!Keep up the good work! Good Luck to your future endeavors!

Who would have thought something so utterly annoying would find such acclaim with the masses. But whatever, to each their own. I'm with you, Lucas, it's like Too Short says: Get yo money, man!right there too
Dec 28, 2009 1:24 PM
Yeah Scott I here ya. But just look at all of it, from music to movies they have all gone down hill.
My kids love to watch fred on youtube but I would never actually pay money to see a movie about him. I have seen a few minutes worth, but that was about it. My higher intelligence forbids me to subject myself to anymore. My kids will grow out of it one day too.
Good luck Lucas, hope you get to meet Jim Carrey one day.

Kudos to the mom for nixing the weed scene! Why does that have to be taken for granted and always thrown in there? Glad to see someone standing their ground! As a mother of 5... much appreciated!!!City Woman

re Scott and the likesI don't sit around and watch wrestling or car racing on tv...because I don't care for it. That doesn't mean someone else doesn't like it! Change the channel!
Someone from our community is doing something HUGE. We should embrace him and wish him luck, not knock him down for achieving and going beyond his goals.
If you don't care for FRED, don't watch the movie...he doesn't need negative people like you OR your 5 bucks to make it big! Sounds like jealousy to me!

Bravo to Lucas & his family. I'm a middle aged mom who actually likes "Fred" as silly as it is. I am thrilled that a Columbus teenager has taken such great initiative & is doing something so great. Yes Lucas, you're a great role model for Columbus kids. With your talent & moxy & your wonderful family behind you I'm sure you'll get to meet your hero Jim Carrey sometime.Joan Bright

Way to go Lucas!! I remember when you were just a little baby when I would go pick up my daughter from your house. She was friends with your sister Stephanie. When she tells her college friends that she knows you, they don't believe her! I hope you have your premier in good ol' Columbus, so we can come and see it!50 Year Old Fan

Way to go, Lucas! Hang on to the values instilled by your family for the thrilling roller coaster ride ahead of you. I know you from grade school, and you deserve every bit of the success you've achieved!Gilligan

Yes, let's all be positive about this, or we could drag down his successful career. Be serious!Sure it's crap. So were Loony Tunes, Scooby Doo, Transformers, Teletubbies, etc. etc. etc. We are not talking about the BBC here.
I was interested about the top channels Fred is competing with on YouTube. Let's just say that we must be pretty starved for entertainment.
My advise would be to look at the future. A twenty-something with a chipmunk voice may not be so endearing. Lucas certainly has acting ability.

Just my opinion, but, maybe some of you need to go and ask this young man 4 his autograph. Ya just never know. Could end up being the next Ron Howard.Sub
Dec 28, 2009 6:14 PM
The very first time I saw FRED on Youtube, not knowing anything about him, I thought, "I would hate to sub in that kid's class!" Boy was I surprised to find out that I HAVE!! AND, I had absolutley no recollection of him! (In substitute teacher standards that is a good thing!) Congrats to Lucas' parents for raising such a great kid that can behave when he should and yet can be so silly, he becomes famous for it! :) Keep up the good work, Lucas!Really well ok
Dec 28, 2009 6:50 PM
Really, well I really dont get it but kudos and congrats. Just please try and add "hidden" positive and moral messages from time to time. The kids must like this so please show them their is more to life than cusing, violence and sexHonestly

I would like to add drugs to "Really well ok" list. Its always positive when kids can use talent is good ways.

I have had the privilege of meeting this young man, and my young daughters think he is wonderful. He is a VERY well mannered, and polite young man. He treats his fans with respect, and is a VERY VERY positive role model for our impressionable young children. Molly and Dave have done a remarkable job raising this young man. I will definitely pay the money for my children to go to see his movie. GO LUCAS!!!!!carrie

Congrats, Lucas!!!It's a little too sad that this announcement was made over 2 weeks ago in the Lincoln Journal start...I thought they owned the Telegram? You'd think a Columbus local story like this would have been one of the first to report on this news as opposed to 2 weeks after the parent company published it. Once again, great journalism, folks!!!

This type of media is what is wrong with the children of today. Not all of them, but a large percentage. Sitting in front of a computer or TV all day and after school into the evening is not healthy. I think this kid is probably ok, but children of today need to get out more and experience life other than this noxious stuff.Fed Up
Dec 29, 2009 12:45 PM
Well Well I see the negative comments keep on rolling on this article to.. It doesn't matter if YOU personally think he is funny it is the millions and millions of people who think he is funny, and that is why he can be in his own movie... Quit bashing him for crying out loud he is only 16.. Instead of bashing him you should be excited for him FINALLY SOMETHING BIG CAME OUT OF COLUMBUS NEBRASKA!!!!50 is the new 30

I've watched Lucas' videos and I love them! If one actually listens to the rapid fire dialog, you will actually here some very funny stuff in there. For those of you that call it stupid, let's remember the TV sitcom that was a huge hit about nothing...Seinfeld. Lucas could be our next Jerry. :)lakeview mom
Dec 29, 2009 3:41 PM
Lucas attends Lakeview High School and is also in my daughters class. He is just a normal kid, who was lucky enough to get a HUGE shot at something wonderful! He has great family values for such a young boy. He is not only something great out of Columbus, but something Lakeview High School should be very proud of! Yeah for Lucas and his family!!outwest

Lucas, I'm glad your sister went with you. She's level headed and got some experience outta NE too! Course all your sisters are level headed and hard workers just like your parents! Congrats to the whole family, as your mom says... take it one day at a time.PS. don't forget your studies.
