COLUMBUS — More than two dozen Columbus firefighters spent less than an hour dousing a residential fire Sunday night in temperatures hovering around 10 degrees with a heavy mist falling.
The wood-framed, two-bedroom home at 1471 18th Ave. sustained extensive heat and smoke damage during the fire, Columbus Fire Chief Dean Hefti reported this morning.
The cause of the blaze remains under investigation, with the Nebraska State Fire Marshal’s Office called in to conduct the probe.
A preliminary investigation revealed the origin of the fire, but couldn’t determine the cause, Hefti said. “We’ll let the fire marshal do his job.â€
The 6:47 p.m. structure fire was discovered in the living room of the residence when the man who lives there returned home, Hefti said.
The man who lives in the home, whose name has not been released, went to a neighbor’s residence to call 911 and report the fire, the fire chief said. Twenty-six professional and volunteer firefighters responded, extinguishing the blaze in about 20 minutes.
The interior crew did a good job knocking down the fire and the other crews came in and cleaned it up, Hefti said. Firefighters shut off the home’s electricity, natural gas and water while working on the fire scene.
The fire left the home uninhabitable, the chief said.
According to Platte County records, the home is owned by Kenneth R. Moersen and is valued at $60,655.

The house is actually on 15th Street, as I live on 14th, a block south of this house. That's really too bad...a fire at any time is horrible, let alone Christmas Time.hey red

Would everyone please pipe down?..The man who lived in that house is a VERY NICE man who lost his two beloved cats in the fire. (I enjoyed the comments from red and laughed at the comments from hey red. I finally understood all of the comments when honestly came along.) On a more serious note, please keep the victim of the fire, a MOST WONDERFUL MAN, in your thoughts and prayers. He is a TRUE GEM!

To settle things, yes his house is on 15th st. The corner of 15th and 18th ave, but his address is the 1400 block. I know because he is one of my neighbors. I agree, he is a very very nice guy and it's too bad for the loss of his pet. What's more important are the circumstances surrounding the fire. According to other neighbors, when he had gotten home, he found his screen cut out and it was either his window or door broken, which says someone was probably trying to rob him. Don't know if this is officially what happened, but if so, that's just messed up. What kind of jerk not only breaks into someones house to steal from them, but also sets the place on fire?to phreakwars

I hope your post is not accurate. That is very disturbing to think about. Is there any help for this man? It didn't say if he had a place to stay or anything. I hope someone or an agency stepped up to help him out. This community is very giving- I hope he has help. Is his house able to be fixed??

The Red Cross showed up to help him. I feel very deeply for this man. From the sounds of it someone broke in not only to rob him but to destroy his house with fire??? It's very scary and sad that things are coming to that in Columbus. I'm just grateful he wasn't hurt.Citizen wanting to Contribute

I would like to contribute to the victim of this fire. Is there a fund set up for this nice man? Columbus is a very, very caring community, and since it IS Christmas week, I believe contributions from the community for this victim would be extremely appropriate! Does anyone know if 'Ken's Christmas Fire Fund' is set up somewhere?...(Maybe contributions could be made in his name to ONE of the local banks!) I believe Christmas is a time of giving to those in need, and this is a great cause AND a great person to help, especially since he is the victim of such a horrible crime!
