Parkway, 18th Ave. an unsafe situation

Saturday, Nov 07, 2009 - 11:59:49 am CST

To the Editor:

This letter is in regard to the 18th Avenue and north arterial stop light.

The arterial just opened from 18th Avenue to 33rd Avenue. Sunday afternoon, I came upon an accident that had just occurred.

A second, and this time fatal, accident occurred Thursday afternoon.

I suggest another light (a caution light), some distance from each direction be installed warning motorists of the approaching stop light.

I agree with Lois that caution lights are needed not only at the 18th Avenue intersection, but also with the 33rd Avenue and 48th Avenue intersections because there is so much traffic going to the college and residents who live north of the Lost Creek Parkway.

A group of us were talking about this situation a couple weeks ago and we all agreed that the configuration and traffic controls on the Parkway border on "Intentional Negligent Homicide."

I think that the city and county can save themselves and our taxpayers from many lawsuits if they put up 24-hour working signal lights at each of these intersections in addition to caution lights warning that traffic control signal lights will soon turn "red."

I personnally find it incredulous that signal lights have not been mentioned for either 33rd or 48th Avenues especially since so many young adults are commuting each day to and from the community college on the hill. I can hear the constant roar of these vehicles from my house several blocks from 33rd Ave. in the early morning and evening hours.

Please city council and county supervisors get on the ball and save lives and us from unnecessary lawsuits that will most likely be ruled in favor of the Plaintiffs !!
