COLUMBUS -- The warm fall day was just what farmers were asking for.
It was perfect weather to head out into the fields to harvest their crops. But several farmers in the area spent Saturday tending, not to their own harvest, but that of a friend.
At about 8:30 in the morning, combines and trucks started to show up at Richard Swantek’s home of rural Columbus. For hours, farmers from around the area harvested acres of corn. It was a plan they set in motion weeks ago to help Swantek who was suffering from cancer.

Events like this show the heart of Nebraska. When I lived in Washington state people told me that the one thing they loved about visiting Nebraska football games was how kind and respectful Nebraskan's are compared to home fans at other states they visited. Our way of life as displayed in this article can be summed up in one word: Empathy. I pray that empathy and togetherness spirit is extended and passed on to the new immigrants who may have chose our state because of this very reputation.Pam

While I live in the city this is why I have total respect for the farm families. Alway ready to help their fellow farmers and strangers. They let us hunt their land, stop to help someone broke down on the side of the road and never ask for any thing in return. This is what makes Nebraska spirit what it is. Thanks to all of you!
