Hillyer: CPS may feel cuts next year

COLUMBUS -- Columbus Public Schools won’t feel the sting of a budget-cutting special session of the Nebraska Legislature this year, but cutbacks in state education spending could begin showing up in 2010-11.

That’s the way CPS Superintendent Paul Hillyer reads the tea leaves of Gov. Dave Heineman’s proposal for across-the-board cuts to balance the state’s budget and account for a projected $334 million shortfall.

It looks like the level of state aid for schools will hold steady for 2009-10, which would allow CPS to avoid changes to its $35.28 million budget adopted in September, Hillyer said.

Come on Dr. Hillyer, don't worry about projected budget shortfalls--all you have to do is adopt an even larger budget for 2010-2011, tell all of us poor tax payers that you NEED our tax money for the children, and then you can just take it from us. I'm sure you'll be able to stash away a few more million $$$$$'s into the cash reserve account that already has millions of $$$$$$$'s in it. Then you can decry the conditions of the facilities and go ahead and add on further un-needed additions to the schools and hire more teachers and para's to use the additional money taken from us the taxpayer. Oh, but I'm sure that none of that will happen and that you'll seriously look at where you can cut back on the budget, just like the rest of the taxpayers in this community are doing in our personal lives.
see the future

i think i can see the future already....higher local property taxes again to raise the short fall from the state. the county assessors office will be busy again going around to everyones houses next year to raise our valuations even higher. i find it funny though all you see and hear on the news is how property values have fallen across the u.s., but here in nebraska and columbus they just continue to rise. how exactly can that be?

I think we were told this about this year, that is why CPS teachers hardly got a raise (not big enough to cover the higher mandatory retirement taken out and increased insurance premiums, giving many teachers less pay this year than last year) and the state didn't cut money, and the federal government sent stimulus money.

Oh, and "dont worry", Dr. Hillyer and the board did cut spending, they cut a program that was to start (the alt. school) and asked all staff to look for ways to help save money individually and forward any ideas to them to help reduce spending throughout the district, during this time.

hmmmm--How can you claim that there was budget cutting already, when the budget was raised 13.2% over last year. Maybe a program or two was cut, but overall you can't say that by raising your budget by that amount that any significant cuts were made. Even though I didn't do great in my math classes, I can figure that much out.
Fire Hillyer

Thank you Paul for saving my money for me. Wait a minute I can save my money better than Paul can. Why would Paul Hillyer think it is a good idea to over tax me. It's time for the school board to do the job you have been elected to do. FIRE PAUL

I think you need to get rid of all the sports programs. Hillyer doesn't like them anyway.
Dont Worry

Don't worry about the projected budget shortfall. Paul will take care of it. Get rid of sports. Paul dosn't like them. Get rid of students Paul dosn't like them. Get rid of teachers Paul dosn't like them. Our enrollment is 125 students less than paul projected. He got rid of the students. Sports, Paul is dong everything he can to destroy that program. Teachers how many does He have force into regisnation. Lets get a new leader to lead our school.
Lets be responsible

Come on Paul enough with the smoke and mirrors. Do the right thing for the school. Except a lower wage.
I wonder.

Gee, I wonder if maybe we could've saved the money that went to the four televisions put in the weight room. May I remind you while in there, why would you have time to watch television, you're working out. I know our weights teachers says NOT to watch them. Common sense anyone??
cut back

I know how to cut about $11,000 during the next 30 days.....then maybe Hillyer could be an assistant to the assistant superintendent.
