WOLBACH -- There is never a great time to suffer injuries, especially in a state semifinal game.
In losing 66-40 Thursday to Greeley-Wolbach in the Six-man State Football Playoffs, the St. Edward football team was forced to change its offensive strategy early due to injuries to Daniel Zierke and Christian Spath.
“They did a heck of a job containing us and we lost some offensive linemen for a while. We only have three real offensive linemen, so when we lost some of them early on we had to go to more of a spread offense, which we didn’t want to do,” St. Edward coach Jereme Jones said. “We wanted to power the ball a little more, but we just aren’t as deep this year to withstand that.”
After losing to the Titans earlier this season 53-52, the rematch was expected to be a high-scoring affair, but the first quarter painted a different picture.
With neither team scoring in the opening frame, the game started off in a stark contrast to the first meeting this season. For the Beavers, turnovers were key in the first quarter as both defenses shined.
