COLUMBUS -- Alltel Corp. customers in the greater Columbus area should not expect the transition to Verizon Wireless until at least 2010, pending the final sale of Verizon assets in the region to AT&T.
In January, Verizon paid approximately $5.9 billion to acquire Alltel. As a condition of the regulatory approvals by the U.S. Department of Justice and the Federal Communications Commission to complete the purchase of Alltel, Verizon agreed to divest overlapping properties in 105 markets across 24 states, which included properties in Boone, Butler, Colfax, Dodge, Merrick, Nance, Platte, Polk, Saunders and Washington counties.
The following May, in order to comply with the regulatory condition, AT&T announced an agreement for $2.35 billion to acquire properties divested by Verizon, including those in the greater Columbus area, pending regulator approval.

I warn you, Verizon is TERRIBLE, they can't port phone numbers as they should and then lies repeatedly to it's 'customers'! I was an Alltel customer for years and never had a significant problem. As soon as I started dealing with Verizon my service has been completely unacceptable and I feel like I'm being robbed by them.
On 8/31/09, I updated my phone to a LG enV TOUCH phone with Verizon. After taking this phone home I realized that it didn't have the functionality of the 4 year old Motorola that I had previously, so I took the phone back to Verizon a couple hours after I bought it. They refunded me 100% for all the hardware I bought, but they said I had to leave my account open to port the number to AT&T. The only call I made on this account was to customer service to confirm it wasn't as functional as my 4 year old phone.
So immediately after returning the phone I go home and order an iPhone and request to have my phone number ported to my new AT&T account. Nine days later, after the phone never comes as scheduled, I find out my AT&T account has been cancelled because Verizon wouldn't release my phone #. So I try again, again a 9 day wait for delivery, in the meantime I get a bill from Verizon for $100.03 for less than a month of holding my old phone #.
Then my second order gets cancelled because Verizon would not port my number. So I go to the Verizon location, ask what I was charged for if they were just holding my phone number. At that point I ask to close my account and just drop my old phone number to avoid any additional charges. Verizon says they had no record of not releasing my phone number so they still have to charge me for having an open account with premium voice and data service. The rep tells me, "Don't pay that bill because that was for the full billing cycle which we're in the middle of", "If you pay that bill, we'll end up owing you money", "A new bill will be coming that is less than the $100."
Then a couple weeks later, I get a bill for $287.05 and it appears my account is still open. So I go back to the Verizon store. A manager confirms that my account is currently still open and since it is still open, I'm getting charged for an early contract withdrawal. (their failure to port my phone number left my account open long enough I passed the deadline for cancellation) This manager then tells me I have two options. 1. to go through the approval process in store with Verizon to have a majority of charges revoked but that could take up to 3 months because it goes through a multi tier system of managers. I ask if they're going to report me to the credit agencies in that time for not paying my bill. The manager says, "I don't know what their process is". He then says, I should be getting a bill for around $3.00. He says option #2 is to call Verizon customer service and have my charges corrected immediately. I choose to call customer service. The manager uses his office phone to call customer service. After explaining the situation for the 3rd time in the store, I wait on hold for 10 minutes, a customer service rep on the phone ends up telling me I will receive a billing statement for $0.00. I ask for a confirmation number, she has none. I ask for a printed statement and they can't or won't give me a print out of my current total. Total time in store: 33 minutes
So I go to an AT&T store, buy an iPhone 3GS, set up an account with a new phone $255.71. Total time in store, 25 minutes.
A couple days later I get a Verizon bill that says my account is now closed and I owe $287.05. I also start getting automated calls on my work phone saying I need to pay my Verizon bill.
I call customer service again and they tell me I've been credited $255.44 but I still owe $31.61. One guy tells me I need to pay that immediately or I'll be charged late charges, later in the same call a lady tells me, "No, you wont' be charged late charges"
Now, the only printed bill I've gotten is for $287.05, and what for? Verizon wouldn't release my old phone #, their customer service reps lied to me repeatedly about what I owed them and that they closed my account.
As of today, I've waited three weeks and I still don't have anything in print that says what I owe anything other than $287.05 …for one call to Verizon customer service and hours and hours of headaches. I just hope I'm not getting reported to credit agencies and not getting late fees for not paying whatever I now owe. Now, I'm just waiting to see what I owe because I've heard three different amounts but only have a bill for $287.
Meanwhile, I can't get over how awesome my iPhone is. Verizon is TERRIBLE!
Happy US Cellular customer

Got so tired of the Alltel/Verizon fiasco and bad signal that I finally bought out my contract with them and made the switch last month to US Cellular. I now have great service and a strong signal. Best decision I could have made!Just Wrong

This has been a headache for people all over Nebraska. I carry a Viaero phone and yes Columbus is still somewhat lacking Viaero coverage but new towers are on their way. 3 more to be built within the next year. One near Columbus High, the hospital, and south of town. Their coverage outside of Columbus blows away Alltel and Verizon. I carry both phones as one is for work and the other is my personal. I use my Viaero phone more often. It is nice driving between Humphrey and Platte Center on highway 81 and being able to use my Viaero phone rather than my Alltel phone cause Alltel's service is horrible there. I travel the state a lot and really Viaero is much better. A company that cares about small towns under 500 people and still wants to put a tower there. Alltel won't do that. I will admit Leigh does need help pretty bad with either Alltel or Viaero. Just wish one of these companies would step up and build a tower. Viaero would most likely be the lead condidate since they own their own company that puts up their towers compared to Alltel to has to have contracts with others out there to build theres. I read somewhere as well that Viaero, in the state of Nebraska, is bringing in more new customer's than Alltel, Sprint, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon per month. This is truely a great company and is really on the rise. I had service with them two years ago and hated Viaero. I then decided to try them back because of the tthings I've heard and their network is fantastic ceven compared to 1 year ago. The plans are cheaper, you get more minutes, more free numbers to call, and their customer service is fantastic.Other towns did it....

WHAT!!!! AN UGLY VIAERO TOWER BY COLUMBUS HIGH? This is a residential area! It's not in my back yard but I would think the people that live in that neighborhood should petition to fight it. The city ought to pass an ordinance either forbidding this or requiring any tower installation to blend in with the surroundings.Bern

Yes, Alltel/Verizon service is NOT good. I was with Alltel for 10 years and I am not one for change. I finally got tired of all the dropped calls and no signal and last week switched to US cellular. I now have great signal and have had no dropped calls. Calls are very clear and sharp, unlike my old Alltel calls that had static. I was also able to port my old number. I am very happy that I switched, only wished I would have done it sooner!!!Alltel customer

I just switched over to US Cellular and recommend everyone else with troubles to do so also. You get better reception in this area. There are a few differences in contracts, but I'm going to be happy with what I got now. Friendly customer service and they don't treat their customers like a puppet show!
