Tires slashed, windows shot out

Sunday, Nov 01, 2009 - 10:20:42 am CST

City residents were plagued last week by a series of car windows being shot out. Halloween night saw several tires flattened. Wht makes people do this? How can it be stopped?

Why dont this town have neighborhood watch? Its been discussed before. All you people need to take responsibility on where you live. You just want someone else to do all the policing while someone else is out their destroying your property!

Who's "you people"? You mean people who go to bed at a decent hour and work for a living? Kids have been doing this for decades. It might take tying some kids to their beds. But which ones? In all seriousness, a neighborhood watch is a good thing, but these are so random and quick that its over before you know it.

Around a dozen volunteers drove the streets into the wee hours last night to watch for this kind of thing. Katie is right these were random and quick.

I bet it had something to do with the railroad. You never hear about train cars getting their tires slashed.

Here's how to stop it. The next person to see someone vandalizing their property,,, Shoot em with a blow gun with horse tranquilizer on the dart....then call the cops. I bet if these vnadals get the s*#t beat out of them by a civilian or two they would stop. If you dont want to do either of these, simply call the cops!! or call me, cause I would love to get my hands on the little bugger that put a beer bottle through my windshield!

Oh I totally agree with conspiracy, is it just a coincidence that the railroad never has any reports of broken windshields or flattened tires???

and they are always seen on the same blocks too... is that a coincidence? I think not!!!

For as many railroad cars that go thru town daily, the number is just unfairly lopsided that neighbor cars are being targeted... makes you wonder don't it???

Maybe we should start a neighborhood railroad watch, keep an eye out for those pesky perpetrators!

Kidding aside,
pranks are pranks and cost money, not generally to the prankster, but to John Q. Public.
There's not a chance in hell that the police will catch them. Like putting your finger in a dam.
Neighborhood watches only work when a concerted group of people care about their neighbors. won't happen in Columbus. I'll bet on it.

Like the old saying goes, nothing good ever happens after midnight. Responsibility starts at home. MY question is, Do the parents know where their kids are at 2AM ? I doubt it.

They are just angry at the world and are trying to compensate for their shortcomings.

Like it was already said, this has been going on for years. The kids that did it when I was growing up were just dense. They probably read these blogs, laugh, take another drag of their dope, laugh, get the muchies, stab someone, look down, get angry again, go break a window. Its just a vicious circle.

The rail road gets hit also. Have you not seen all the things painted on the side of the train cars. I wonder how often the the railroad has to try and remove all the painted words on the cars and what it costs. I enjoy watching the cars go by and seeing what is painted on the sides.

I think we should do more with the evidence we got. Like the beer bottle dc got thrown in the windshield. Finger print it! The cops won't do this unless the damage is worth the time to finger print it. Their is a lot more evidence like this that the cops won't touch. I'm sure if you add up the damage of all these people, you can come up with some people to arrest.
Accountability
Nov 6, 2009 10:30 AM
First, I feel bad for all who were affected by the actions of a few individuals. Neighborhood watch is a great tool; however, given the world that we live in today, which is greatly lacking the key core value necessary for productive, healthy, helpful individuals is "accountability"!! Individuals that choose to participate in this type of activity will only learn this is unacceptable when they are held accountable for their actions. This starts at home, but if that fails, it is then up to our judicial system. It is flawed, too many bleeding hearts out there, not enough tough lessons. I don't condone physical violence, but physical labor, great idea!! If these kids are caught, make them attend work camps, 12 hour days cleaning up our roads, parks, etc. They would learn that if you think stealing, slashing tires is fun; this is the reward you get. I bet after 12-hrs of hard work, every Sat. and Sun. for 3 months, they just might get the picture. A slap on the wrist, and a small fine, is not working. Teach them young, and you just might help turn some youth around. We all make choices, and each of them are met with different results. They will hopefully soon make better choices.

I moved here from Colo. a few years ago. A citizens patrol was initiated there to aid the local police dept. with many things. One of which was to observe an address or area for a specific car or person. Another was to patrol an area of the city for anything out of the ordinary. They are connected to the PD with police radios and travel in pairs. I was going to join this effort but left for Columbus before I could. It is my understanding that it definitly is a succesful effort and is still in use. One of the prerequisites to be accepted for this is that a person must attend their police academy first. I don't know if the local PD is interested in something like this or not.

what has happened to that town. Who are these people just ruining vehicles?? Why dont they go play some nintendo or board games for cryin out loud! If I catch one of these hooligans, I tell you what, I am going to give them a good fashioned nebraskan whoop bass. I tell you one thing, its not going to be pretty it seems like these jugheads can get away with this, but trust me we will catch them and they will pay the price,my fellow neighbours they will be caught, and trust me justice will be served. Can I get a AMEN.

I just witnessed another car running the monastary road north red light. The Telegram leaves this post on for days yet the story about the little boy getting killed at that dangerous intersection is taken off right away. The public needs to be warned about how dangerous the 18th Ave./ Monastary road is right now untill everyone gets used to it. No one is used to stopping after they head north out of Columbus. These are driving patterns that have been ingrained into local drivers for decades and they expect people to change in a matter of a few days. I ran the red light the first week. Go out there and look at the black marks from a semi truck that had to slam on his brakes. Unless something is changed at that intersection real quick someone else will lose there life within a few months and probably a few weeks.

all this political correctness, liberal excuse making, putting our police on the defensive is doing one positive thing. It is arming more citizens every day. These snotnose punks that compromise these "gangs" are going to get big boy attention one day.
