COLUMBUS -- Amanda Soltero’s first pageant competition earned her the title of Miss Nebraska Teen USA.

The 17-year-old Columbus High School senior took home the crown at the event in Norfolk, competing against 11 other girls. Soltero is following in her mother’s footsteps. Sharon Soltero was Mrs. Nebraska 2005.

“She has always said, ‘You have to try one just to try one. You will never know if you like it,’” the younger Soltero said of her mom’s encouragement about entering a pageant.

But her initial response was no. A phone call from another Miss Teen USA convinced her otherwise.

It's nice to hear about some positive youth activities. Congradulations Amanda. It doesn't always have to be MIP, or stabbings, or graffiti. We need to focus on the positives.

Nice story but it is really that important to be on the front page. Why not on the Youth page. There are a lot of Big News stories going on in Columbus that could impact our community. Not sure this is one. Jealousy probably doesn't have anything to do with it. I would not allow my child to enter a beauty contest. Don't know about OMG.

Don't understand why anyone objects to the article. Why does anyone want to so unkind expecially for no reason? Look at the front page, there are only two positive articles and this is one of them. Congratulations to a Columbus Youth! I am sure you will represent Columbus and Nebraska very well! Good Luck!!

First of all to Agree OMG ..That’s the difference between you and Mrs. Soltero she’s twice the mother you will ever be because she allows her daughter to go out participate in something that makes her happy that she obviously was successful in….. to me it is sad that you have to get on here and put down this young lady because of the things she has accomplished in 18 years that u have not accomplished or done anything remotely close to accomplishing in your 50+ yrs …however old you are…I am not even from Columbus but I do think this is perfect front page material and I’m sorry that you’ll never allow your children to go beyond what is expected of them and I’m sorry that you are jealous because they nor u will never or never have made it onto the front page or anywhere in the paper for that matter…well maybe the legal’s… obviously if there was a better story to be on the front page it would be…..and for you OMG there is no reason for you to get on here and make some bs comment because you are jealous of what Amanda has accomplished and how proud everyone is of her …get out there and show that you can do something with your life rather than sit at home on your computer trying to make someone feel bad because they are more successful at the age of 18 then u ever will be …you will never get anywhere in life by putting down people who are successful ….CONGRATULATIONS AMANDA!!!

Did you know that the Miss America Pageant is the number ONE provider of scholarships for young women. Miss USA Pageant is second. I bet this young lady just won a nice scholarship as well...and probably became an even more confident and well-spoken person as a result of doing it. Have you ever talked to any young Columbus girl who competed in Miss Columbus? Most, if not all, of them know how to have an intelligent, engaging conversation with an adult. They are to be applauded for putting themselves out there to compete for scholarships...just as you would applaud any athlete who competes for a college scholarship.

I was in the Miss Columbus Pageant a while back and it truly does give you a confidence boost - and I received a nice little scholarship - helped pay for books. I don't think I'd do it again, but I would defintely let my daughters try it - if they wanted to.
Great Job

Great Job Amanda!!! My daughter has competed in pageants in the past. She has meet many new friends and gotten some nice prizes along the way. I challenge those of you who this this is no big deal to stand on a stage in front of people and keep your confidence and poise. I have been on stage in front of people as a pageant queen's father and it's not easy. Maybe some of you instead of picking on a teenage girl should just shut up in this case and let her have her 15 min of fame. Amanda and her family are good people who will help others and not be snobby. It's good to see someone like that with the crown on their head!

I happened to be in the Miss Columbus pageant and also the Miss Northeast Nebraska pageant back in the early 90's. Even though I did not win I had so much fun and the experience was wonderful! If my daughters wanted to enter I would be 100% behind them. I am not a fan of the little girl pageants, but the ones for the older teens. I think this is news worthy and it does belong on the front page. These pageants taught me so much about interview skills, dressing for success, and not to be afriad of performing on stage- BY MYSELF!! Yes I had to wear a swimsuit for the Miss Columbus Pageant- thankfully I had the guts to do it! Amanda- I do not know you but Congratulations and Way to go!!

I did not say anything about the girl just that this is not news. I am sure there are better things to report about that really belongs on the front page. Oh but wait it is the telegram. So all of you who ripped on me for being mean, get for real.
GO Amanda

Congrats Amanda! I am very happy for you. You are so beautiful and such a sweet down to earth girl. It is so cool you won your first pageant!
To OMG and Agree omg:
This is defenitly front page worthy news! You said that there were other big news stories but didn't bother to actually list one. Are you saying you'd rather read about the dumb construction, teens getting busted for alcohol or drugs(probably because their parents have the same attitude as you and don't encourage anything postive) or the gangs vandlizing everyday. I personally get bored with the same thing everyday. And Agree omg, you said you wouldn't put your children in a pageant but this was a young adult pageant so its not like those shows on tv with the crazy pageant parents...Amandas parents are great parents and are very involved in their children's lives.
Again...way to go Amanda
