COLUMBUS -- Local dancers will be learning some fancy footwork in New York City.

About 40 students from Barb’s Schools of Dance and Desiree’s Dancers will travel to the big city in May to take classes at the Broadway Dance Center.

It is a unique opportunity for the Columbus and David City students because they typically perform other forms of dance.

“Around here Broadway dance isn’t popular,” said Diane Semrad, an instructor at the Columbus studio.

More common is tap and hip hop. Broadway dance combines dancing, singing and acting. The students won’t be performing an actual stage production in New York City, but they will take with them the experience of working with choreographers that do perform and instruct actual Broadway actors.
