COLUMBUS -- Jane Tooley has made late-night traffic stops on lonely highways.

She’s investigated homicides and sexual assault cases. The first female trooper in the Nebraska State Patrol also served a couple of stints providing security for two governors.

The 64-year-old Columbus native recently marked 40 years of law enforcement service, with 25 of those years spent climbing the ranks of the state patrol after graduating from the agency’s training academy in 1977.

“I didn’t know what to expect (when I entered the academy in March 1977),’’ said Tooley, who had worked several years as a parole officer in Omaha before before becoming a state trooper.

Congratulations Janey--You may not remember me ,but I was a college boy and you were about 6 years old--cute and carrying two toy pistols on your belt with a broad smile. I'm not surprised you wound up in law enforcment.
