Fall is a good time to plant trees and the week of Sept. 20 is ReTree Nebraska week. The goal of ReTree Nebraska is to have one million new trees planted in Nebraska in 10 years. Along with quantity, the focus is also on quality.
For quality, choose a tree that is not as commonly grown for species diversity. Select the right tree for the location for healthy growth and function. Use correct planting and post-planting care for a vigorous growing tree. Avoid overwatering and fertilizing too much. Prune correctly for 10-15 years after planting.
Choosing a tree for diversity means selecting a tree not commonly planted in an area. While it is tempting to plant what is common, because it is proven to grow in the area, the ReTree Nebraska folks call this “putting all our eggs in one basket.”
