Let smokers group together for their own insurance. Why must I pay for the high cost of insurance to support them and their sicknesses?

People should just simply get informed and read the bill for themselves. See what's really in it, and decide if they think it would be right for them or not.

It can be found at

http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-111hr3200IH/pdf/BILLS-111hr3200IH.pdf

Don't scream and yell and accuse and parrot more propaganda about what you heard is in it. Read it for yourself and make your own judgement.

If you like it, you like it, if you don't you don't, as long as you have seen it for yourself and actually read it, you will make a rational decision about it.

Adrian Smith is holding a town hall in York Nebraska on Tuesday, August 11, 2009 @ 10:30 A.M.

Attend the meeting and talk with him. Don't go armed with propaganda lies, go armed with actual facts that you see in the bill by reading it yourself, and ask him the questions you want to know about something you see in it.

Remember, you can read it for yourself in PDF format @ http://www.gpo.gov/fdsys/pkg/BILLS-111hr3200IH/pdf/BILLS-111hr3200IH.pdf

And on many other websites. Try a .gov site first, so you know you are getting the real deal.

What can WE do about health care? Just simply stay informed.

What do we need to do with health care? Not have government run health care. That is what we need to do with it.

1) Tort reform
2) Medical savings accounts (if you don't spend it, you keep it at the end of the year.)

3) REDUCE GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS. Millions of man hours are spent every year by health care professionals doing paperwork mandated by the state and the Feds that no one uses or cares about.

What Tim said. I would also add that health insurance plans should be able to be purchased like car insurance. You decide what you want or think you'll need and not pay for all the stuff you're not likely to use. Deregulate how you can't purchase health care across state lines to increase competition.

It is so ironic that the anti-military far left Obama crowd is now saying how orchestrated the anger is. Any protest has people that step up and do some recruiting. I do not think the far left was too mad about the anti Bush war protests a few years back when you had the far left blogs organizing. Or what about the anti-veitnam college groups in the 60's. What we have with these protests is a few people coming to their senses and saying no to anymore Socialism. Hopefully millions more will join in!

the hardcore right wing conservities have ruined what was this great country. we need universal healthcare right away. many other countrys around the world have universal healthcare and thay know how to take care of their own people and the visitors of that country. the cost of health insurance has been skyrocketing ever since health insurance have been created. the medical field is a major money making business. an many citizens on this country are purely greedy. its about time that our president is finally doing something right. unlike the last president that nearly got this country in a major wreck. i thank god that the people of the u.s.a. voted on someone that is well spoken, honest, problem solving, and great. god bess america!

You must be a complete idiot to think the government could run health care better then the private sector. The government is trying to run medicade, medicare and social security with totally devasting results. all three will likely be bankrupt in the next 5-10 years. Barry is in way over his head and has not clue. He's just another empty suit that talks. We the people of the united states need to vote out the liberal left wing and get back to reallity.

I agree with you and would like to take it a step further. Group all the fat/obese people together. Facts are they will have many , many problems so why must I pay for them !!
I also think the airlines should base their charge on total weight that is the person + the bag versus the current method.
While I do agree that some people actually have a weight disease/problem it is very obvious that most peoples weight could be controlled by what and how much they eat.

Other countries systems are just as much of a failure as ours because they have to ration health care.

Read a few British or Canadian papers and hear of the numerous system problems. Talk to a few Doctors on the US coasts and see how many "tourist" patients they treat due to the long waits in their own countries. Befriend a few people from countries that have these systems and learn about the reality of living with this sort of rationing.

Additionally...if we have a national health care system we will have to deal with the immigration problem sooner rather than later...with "free" health care it will be attractive for anyone from any country to come over here and get "free" treatment. You might get away with providing care for every naturalized citizen...but the whole world will knock on the doctor's door with our current immigration policy...and then we will have to wait in line to see the doctor, behind the folks from South America, Mexico, Guatamala...etc...who snuck in here just to get medical care that isn't available in their own country.

I dont know about smokers rates but should increase the rates for out of shape and obeast people die are more likely to be infected by virus and other diseases due to lack of proper circulation
Government cant run what it has now and to give them a chance to run that would just lead to more fraud and illeagal.

Being informed is the only way, as well as citizens being "with" each other instead of against each other. Novel idea isn't it? People are pitted against each other, which only serves political purposes and gets nothing done.
If you read the history of health care, politicians have been trying to do something about it since Theodore Roosevelt, and there were both Republican and Democratic presidents who also tried to reform it. G.W. Bush did too but went about it the wrong way, and shelved it.
The best thing that ever happened to the elderly is Medicare and I don't know what the country would have done in its place. Well, there would be millions of people dead at early ages without stents and bypasses for one thing.......not to mention other things. I agree with the Pres. that there are needless tests performed multiple times. I have experienced enough of that myself.
There are many ways to save money in health care and with 300 million+ citizens (Canada has around 59 million) we need to do something now. Going crazy at meetings, and being misinformed is of no help. The President we have now, learned what the perils of healthcare are when his mother had cancer. Everyone who is not on Medicare or in the military or government, can be denied coverage at ANY time. Thinking and reasoning are the only way. Btw........the Republicans have had complete control many times and done nothing.

Top Five Health Care Reform Lies—and How to Fight Back

The health care fight has turned ugly, fast. Many of these claims are just incredible—but if we don't fight back with the truth, the they will continue to poison the health care debateLie
#1: President Obama wants to euthanize your grandma!!!
The truth: These accusations—of "death panels" and forced euthanasia—are, of course, flatly untrue. As an article from the Associated Press puts it: "No 'death panel' in health care bill."4 What's the real deal? Reform legislation includes a provision, supported by the AARP, to offer senior citizens access to a professional medical counselor who will provide them with information on preparing a living will and other issues facing older Americans.5
Lie #2: Democrats are going to outlaw private insurance and force you into a government plan!!!
The truth: With reform, choices will increase, not decrease. Obama's reform plans will create a health insurance exchange, a one-stop shopping marketplace for affordable, high-quality insurance options.6 Included in the exchange is the public health insurance option—a nationwide plan with a broad network of providers—that will operate alongside private insurance companies, injecting competition into the market to drive quality up and costs down.7
If you're happy with your coverage and doctors, you can keep them.8 But the new public plan will expand choices to millions of businesses or individuals who choose to opt into it, including many who simply can't afford health care now.
Lie #3: President Obama wants to implement Soviet-style rationing!!!
The truth: Health care reform will expand access to high-quality health insurance, and give individuals, families, and businesses more choices for coverage. Right now, big corporations decide whether to give you coverage, what doctors you get to see, and whether a particular procedure or medicine is covered—that is rationed care. And a big part of reform is to stop that.
Health care reform will do away with some of the most nefarious aspects of this rationing: discrimination for pre-existing conditions, insurers that cancel coverage when you get sick, gender discrimination, and lifetime and yearly limits on coverage.9 And outside of that, as noted above, reform will increase insurance options, not force anyone into a rationed situation.
Lie #4: Obama is secretly plotting to cut senior citizens' Medicare benefits!!!
The truth: Health care reform plans will not reduce Medicare benefits.10 Reform includes savings from Medicare that are unrelated to patient care—in fact, the savings comes from cutting billions of dollars in overpayments to insurance companies and eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse.11
Lie #5: Obama's health care plan will bankrupt America!!!
The truth: We need health care reform now in order to prevent bankruptcy—to control spiraling costs that affect individuals, families, small businesses, and the American economy.
Right now, we spend more than $2 trillion dollars a year on health care.12 The average family premium is projected to rise to over $22,000 in the next decade13—and each year, nearly a million people face bankruptcy because of medical expenses.14 Reform, with an affordable, high-quality public option that can spur competition, is necessary to bring down skyrocketing costs. Also, President Obama's reform plans would be fully paid for over 10 years and not add a penny to the deficit.15
We're closer to real health care reform than we've ever been—and the next few weeks will decide whether it happens. We need to make sure the truth about health care reform is spread far and wide.

While health care costs are high our system is the best in the world. Survival rates in the US are 8 to 20% higher for serious health issues like cancer. Our system does need changes but not discarded. Limiting law suit awards would lower insurance premiums for doctors and hospitals. Other similar changes could help hold down costs. Tweek the system don't change it. Look at other countries like France that are going broke trying to use socialized medicine. Italy and Canada where long waits to see a doctor are common.
big brother is not needed
Aug 12, 2009 1:00 PM
chris; you have so many errors and problems in your statement that one does not know where to start. how about asking the people in those countries wiht social medicine how it is working. Ask the people who pay for it (you if you are working and me because I am working), ask those that use it or need it, the waits, the passover of help because you are not sick enough.

What needs to be fixed is how the charges are made. We do not need 20 companies involved in one hospital stay. You should have a bill from the hospital and one from the doctor and that is it. Two entities that want/need to make a profit to stay in business instead of 20 that need/do jack up their prices to make a profit. profits for 3 entities instead of 2 raises the cost immediately much less all of them that are involved in one persons hospital stay.

Proud to say I voted for an American hero/POW in the last election. Not hard to figure out who that was.

I just saw comments on a national TV show that said over 200,000 people in Nebraska did not have insurance in 2007-8, and 300,000 are on Medicare (a government run program) That is 30% of the population of Nebraska. Astounding! It floors me that Nebraskans are not for some sort of major healthcare reform.
The very first thing that Pres. Obama mentioned to save money when he first mentioned healthcare, was the savings with electronic records. My doctor and staff now enter all records into a laptop immediately and he says it saves him thousands of dollars a year.
Medical fraud is also said to be over a trillion dollars a year. Medicare recipients do get multiple testing done for the same condition, (I know) so reduction of that can save billions. Many drugs help people.......but many also send some to the hospital and even kill. Most generic drugs....not all.....do the same as brand names
18,000 people a year die from medical mistakes......my husband was but one. Insurance companies make decisions every day about who can have insurance and what they receive.
Just a few things about the present healthcare system that are less than perfect.

Aug 13, 2009 9:04 AM
Katie,

Yes, there are problems, but exchanging one set of problems for another set does not fix this situation.

The problems we have now, the problems you mentioned are not worse than the problems social medicine has. Many people in the UK do not have good outcomes because of the wait to see a doctor. (rationing) There is medical tourism from socialized medicine countries to the US because of this wait. There are doctor shortages, dentist shortages, nurse shortages...etc. in most of these countries too. (additional rationing)

Insurance companies here say yes/no to proceedures. Government says yes/no in socialize countries...but you also have to wait for a slot to get an approved proceedure done. This often means months of additional pain and suffering.

Tweaking the system is needed. Jumping from the frying pan into the fire is not. Please take a very good look at what you are advocating (and if it will work with our current immigration policy) before telling us to jump.

One example:
You say 300,000 Nebraskans are already in a government program. That means they do not need rescuing. Why not advocate electronic records for those patients...start there...show the savings there first. Work the kinks out with a smaller population (or perhaps start with the VA...an even smaller population) Then roll it out for the rest of the country. Implementing electronic records will cause a lot of errors at first...and while that is fine when we are talking about someone's bunions or bursitis...it is deadly when you are talking about oncology, cardiology, or neonatology.

To "enough" and "To enough"; don't stop there now, let's include teenagers having babies with no insurance or means to support them, drug and alcohol abusers, people who ride motorcyles, people who climb mountains, people who fly in planes, people who go on boats or ships, people who water ski, people who hand glide, people who have mental diseases, people who are none of these things but do not take care of themselves properly, babies that are born with defects or other problems, babies that are born premature, etc. etc. etc.

The place to start cutting benefits is for those that are too lazy to work and those that are not contributing via taxes. That will make a huge dent in medical and other costs very quickly.

First bill home countrys for any non-citizen non paying medical bills! Either deduct it from any money that the US gives them or bill them outright!
Stop for profit hospitals. Deduct the same higher amount from the peoples paycheck for healthcare insurance when young and single as later when older. This will even out over the years. Make people who have more than two children pay the higher price for healthcare themselves, do not make others pay it for them! Create giant healthcare groups or pools rather than all these small different pools that keep raising the rates every three years till employers must get new plans all the time. Limit medical law suits. Create senior retiment communities where the more able can assist the less able themselves and lower assisted care costs. Make medical internships include at least one year of working in a mobile low cost or free medical unit or clinic, and at least one month per year after that for medical jobs. Base the amount of time on the a curve of the higher paying jobs. The more money you make in medical fields the more volentary time you must give! Finally legislate a fair system for pharmecutical companys to recoup cost. No pill should be over ten dollars each ever! No monthly presciption should be over thirty dollars for thirty pills! Base the amount a person pays for the most expensive treatments on the persons abilty to pay. A millionare should pay more to have a heart operation than a twenty thousand a year person. That is only fair. The federal goverment should only oversee the validity of medical costs and stop all fraud. Criminal acts are covered by the feds. Not running any healthcare at all.
Finally those who are standing up and speaking out are in no way mobs or gangs! Just look back at the violent protests that the liberals did over almost anything Bush! If any of that crap were done by conservatives and libertarians to the Obama administration the media would b howling like a stuck pig!!!!!!!

That Hitler asked us for our playbook when we were sterilising criminals and mentrally handicapped. That Hoover and Roosevelt were belivers in eugenics. Do you know why we did not get into the war untill the Japanese attacked us. Do you know that members of our government said about Germanys eugenics polict that killed thousands even before the Jews were targeted, the "They were beating us at out own game". Because parents and schools have not taught the real truths of history the youg today do not know what progressives are really all about. They do not know what communisum, socialisum or facisum really is. How can they? We need to stop anything that starts to resemble these terrible things. First off, health care is not a right. Just because a technology is available, doesn't automatically make me entitled to it. The government has absolutely no business in health care insurance.

What makes anyone think they should be entitled to tax me more so they can recieve more benfits? If you have a computer and internet service, then you have something to give up to pay for you own freak'n healthcare. Get YOUR priorities straight and give up your luxuries to pay for your own health insurance if thats what you want. I do not owe it to you. No one owes it to me. If I get sick and can't afford to get better, then I die. Does that bite? Yep. That's life. Anything else is a lazy whiner waiting for another hand out. PERIOD.

We as a society should take care of those who are too disabled to care for themselves. Everyone else needs to get off their lazy ----- and quit expecting everyone else to make your life a little easier. If you didn't earn it, you don't get it. Simple. If you're too lazy to help yourself, that is a choice, not a disability. If you choose to have a nicer car and your car payment makes it too tough to pay for your own insurance, that is a choice, not a disability. Get rid of cable tv, your cell phones, your nice cars, your computer, internet service, shut off your air conditioner, shut off your lights, and buy your own insurance. It is not a right, it is a privilege.

"The welfare of the people in particular has always been the alibi of tyrants, and it provides the further advantage of giving the servants of tyranny a good conscience."

To Kitty "Catty":

Mabey I get a little ticked off at Liberal BS and ignorance and so I type too fast. Ohhhh Welllll!
I'll try to do better just for you!
The main point is modern day Liberals do not know what the hell they are talking about unless they get thier idealistic opinions from other Liberal blogs, Liberal sources, or Liberal talking points. To see the future you must know the past! You must do you own truth checking and know the facts. You will not get anywhere chanting how hope hope hope, yes we can yes we can yes we can and thinking you will benifit from any of this crap Obama puppet and Nancy and Harry and all the other Socialist, Facist's polititians that just want to tell you what is best for you and usurp more power over you.
Remember the lady at the Obama rally before the election. It was a real moving moment when she told him how she needed her own washing machine and ect., ect, ect. He then so grandly told her "Don't worry, We are going to get you taken care of right after the metting!" or something almost exactly to that effect, and all the applause. What a sound bite, and the others like the guy that told him he worked at a fast food place and was going to school and needed this or that. Wonderful human intrest shots all right. Touching, right to the heart. Well to this day no one has helped that woman as far a I know, and when someone on one show tracked her down a month or so after that rally no one had contacted her by then either!
That is my point! These wide eyed believers are still looking up to Obama and the democrats and seeing stars- grasping at thin air!!! Just ask any Gay person who thought they would get something from Obama before the election. People actually thought he would hand them cash, buy them cars, give them houses, and a lot of blacks thought he would do it by just taking it from the rich whites. There are a hundred sound bites to that effect, it's not just my words here.
We were promised open and transparent government and we got non understandable garbage in the stimulus bill and a very bad cap and trade bill passed in the dark of night. Both rammed down our throats while we were told they did not have time to take it slowly because it was a crisis! This administration is the crisis! No damn jobs were creates by the stimulus bill. Any minor temporary recovery in the stock market or anywhere else has been due to the American Work ethic and the American people, not anything that Obama and the congress has done. They need to get the hell out of our way and we will fix whats wrong with this country down here at ground level! Politicians are not any better or any smarter than most of us! They hold no special powers or have any abilities greater than ours. Although they are usually more gifted at selling the BS and believing that they are better than you are. Most Politicains, especially Liberals and always those who consider themselves to be Progressives, are arrogant pompous self rightous asses who are really nothing like thier false images they portray.
And to (Right Said Fred)- You my boy should read Glen Beck's book Common Sense and check a few facts yourself here and there. Liberals fear people like Beck and attack him when they never bother to watch him, or see if what he says is truth or not. I do not believe him anyone unless I check it out myself but he is right a lot of the time even if is does not fit in with your tainted concept of this world!.
Sorry for the lenth, Politics and Religion are my hot topics!

AllenD....I believe I said that the TV program said that there were 200,000 Nebraskans without insurance and 300,000 on Medicare. Combined that is 30% of the population either w/o insurance (or on Medicaid or food stamps)and on the other govt run program, Medicare. That does not include vets I presume. I didn't state it as fact, I only said this is what they said. I am sure it can be verified. I have a relative who works at the Captital and can probably verify that for me.
Med Records....the govt already has us in databases and has for years, as well as any website you frequent. And......the Bush/Cheney wire tapping has not been repealed....so that is something else. On google you can look right into someone's backyard if you want. We gave away our privacy rights years and years ago.
The Constitution that everyone likes to quote. How many amendments have there been to that? The Founders did a great job, for the times, but there is no way they could have foreseen events in the future, and they were not infallible.
I will say one thing....this has been the most debate I have seen going on in this country in decades, and that is a good thing.

Drak - and all who support this thing...My parents have ALWAYS purchased their own health care, created their OWN living will and decided how THEY would handle their end of life situation. EVEN while on Medicare, they carried supplemental insurance to make sure everyone was paid. If only our generation and those younger would have as much sense. If you really really want insurance, you will find it. Either by a job or jobs. Yes plural. Jobs. That is what my Parents did! GOD BLESS those that had more sense that the current generation.
