Appleton EGS to close within the year

COLUMBUS -- Appleton EGS’s Columbus plant will close by October 2010, leaving about 220 workers without jobs.

Employees learned their fate when they were called to a plant-wide meeting at 9:45 a.m. Friday. The gathering reportedly lasted about 10 minutes.

Phyllis Bartholomew, a 12-year EGS employee, said two corporate representatives told employees that company sales were down about 33 percent and other plants were closing as well. The plant, which operates three shifts, is located at 2500 E. 23rd St.

A 23-year employee, who started at the plant when it opened, said it was devastating to him personally, and also to the community to lose the plant, and the jobs.

“It’s not a shock,” said the man who did not want to be identified, “work has been being shipped to Mexico for a couple of years.”

Late Friday afternoon a spokesman from the company’s public relations firm released the following statement in an e-mail to The Telegram.

“Due to the declining economy and drop in demand for its cast electrical devices, EGS announced to employees at its Columbus, Nebraska facility today (August 7, 2009) that the plant will be closed. This difficult decision is no reflection on the quality of our employees at the Columbus plant, who have served the company and our customers well over the years. The closing is expected to be completed by October 2010, and affects approximately 220 employees.”

When asked if the closure would be phased, a spokesman said the closing schedule had not been finalized. Also, employees will receive severance packages based on their years of service with the company.

According to a company Web site the Appleton Electric Company was founded in 1903 and, in 1982, Appleton became a wholly owned subsidiary of Emerson Electric Company, a Fortune 100 Company. In 1997, Appleton and several other entities joined together to become EGS Electrical Group Canada Ltd.

Reuters reported Tuesday that Emerson suffered a 37 percent net profit decline in its most recent quarter. Emerson also reported that no significant economic recovery was likely before late 2010. The Reuters report said this was the second consecutive quarter Emerson missed Wall Street estimates, and the company said full-year profit would be below its earlier forecast.

Emerson stock closed at $35.64, up 88 cents, Friday. The 52-week high and low for Emerson is $50.19 and $24.39 respectively.

The announced closure came following an announcement earlier in the week that Katana Summit LLC was laying of 40 percent of its work force. A midweek story indicated area farm profits would be off about 20 percent from 2008.

Dave Bell, co-chairman of the Columbus Economic Council, said this is the first major blow the community has felt in this recession.

Bell said other area companies have experienced layoffs and reduced hours, but with the intention of rehiring employees and returning workers to full work weeks.

“When companies lay off employees and don’t close, they usually come back when a recession ends.” he said, but “this is the first situation where we appear to be totally losing a plant.”

Although the announcement has been made, Bell said he and others will work with the company to reconsider or potentially adjust, prolong their plans.

“We definitely will encourage Appleton to reconsider,” he said, but “I think our chances of keeping them open permanently are very slim.

“We have to be realistic. They don’t tell their employees they are going to lose their jobs in 12 months unless they are serious,” Bell said, but “we will be talking with them on a regular basis and at least bring up the subject of possibly keeping a portion of the plant open.”

Columbus Area Chamber of Commerce President K.C. Belitz said: “We are disappointed with the announcement” but “we won’t give up ’til we have to.”

The truth is that with Emerson the EGS profits from Columbus are just not high enough but there are & were profits. Emerson Corp's profits may be down not Appleton's. It is a matter of wanting more at any cost. This company is selling our country down the river. Also, this company did not invest capital to give the Columbus Plant a chance to survive. They drove it down so they could justify their move to Mexico because the Mecican government is giving them a better deal at their citizens expense. Where are our State representatives when we need them? This company feasted using our tax dollars with all the tax breaks in the 1980's and now does this. Those people in St. Louis are simply greedy. I hope they reap what they sow. The devil has a special place reserved for them when they meet their maker. I do not know how they can live with themselves.

I worked at Appleton from 1999 through 2003 (when I moved). Already in 2003, they were moving product lines down to Mexico.

Thank you NAFTA. We used to joke back then that EGS stood for "Everything Goes South" because the product lines from Canada moved down to Columbus, and the product lines from Columbus moved to Antipan, Mexico. I see the nickname still stands the test of time.

For my former coworkers, I'm sorry to see this happen. And I wish you the best of luck in finding something else.

Have a great weekend:)

Some only know Appleton life. So many people will suffer and that sucks.. it sucks that the company would rather send the company to Mexico and hurt America just to save them money!!!! What are all the employees going to do where are they going to go i dont believe there is any company that can hire all 220 employees in this town!! The head of Appleton should be ashamed of themselves not caring how many people they hurt!!!

for 17yrs I put in over time it was manditory lost weekend with my family holidays taken away because the company needed me and I had to do it or fired. we all at Appleton gave up a lot, and this is what we get. they declinded us out of 4yrs of raises and now we get a severance package. We all at Appleton just got told no raise this year so where did they get this money. You will never find any better damn workers ever working 12hour days when needed, 30+ days straight to do what ever needed to be done to get the job done. I want to say that I am pround to say I worked with the best damn people Every. Appleton employee I am going to miss you!!!!But you from Rosemont I hope you realize what mistake you make by closing because you will never find as dedicated employees as what you had it is ashame that you never came down to personally get to know the people, and Rick hope you enjoy having the plant in Texas because this move started with you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How sad yet another plant is closing and people will be laid off. Until my retirement a few years ago, I also worked for a local manufacturing plant, and worked my tail off because the overtime was mandatory. No family life, no personal weekends, no life period!! This company also sent work to Mexico, and the quality of product returned to us was really bad. How do companies think they are so much further ahead by sending it to Mexico to save a little on labor costs. When the consumer stops buying because of poor quality, who's going to be blamed then?

I never have seen much good in NAFTA,all it does is too keep the rich richer and the poor people pooer,i worked at the Tyson facility in Norfolk when it shut down and we were given a 3 day notice that it was shutting down with in a few weeks and yet tyson was too save over 30 million dollars and even more by shutting other plants down too so far since all these closings tyson stock has yet too reach 15 dollars.

this is just another situation of greed and idiots running the show. appletons been in a downard spiral for years. thanks to washington the republi-cons and demo-rats gave them the framework to put the nail in the coffin. problem is the american people stand by and just complain. get active bombard your represenitives with phone calls and emails, take what you paid in federal taxes add 4% put it in savings then pay it in april. dont by from companies that dont have the same standards as you and your families. this situation was unneccessary and very unfortunate and the sad thing is it wont be the last. katana is losing contracts thanks to GE,camaco's management cant get it together to pass required audits, behlen cant get their employees to 40hrs but will hire part time welders and recently hired another highpriced manager that ironically came from appleton the list goes on and on. it sure is funny that the only company that allows unions on their property is ADM and their business is booming. take heed though the revolution is coming whether it is idelogical or thru force change is a commin' and it aint the kind ol' barrack is talkin' bout.

Obama did not start socialism in America but he sure is putting the final nail in the coffin. Untill we have a complete reversal and get government out of the way of private business these jobs will continue to go out of country. A Libertarian elected President is what we need. I am sure that great socialist Moser is planning to give another telemarketing firm a few million of our tax money to go into to the Appleton plant. Then we can we replace these jobs with even more low paying telemarketing jobs that do not produce anything, well except for a few angry people at suppertime.

When will this town learn that industry has changed? The factories in this town use to be family friendly and thought of the people in this city as a valuable resource. But yet time and time again we are sold out, used and abused for the sole purpose of the all mighty dollar. I wish we could turn back time and instill the values that use to be held dear to everyone in this country rich and poor alike. I pray this country gets it's identity back before we are sold out by not only our industry, but our leaders in government as well. There is only one truth that has come out of President Obama's mouth and that is "change is coming". But I for one don't think it's for the better. Get ready small town America we are in trouble!!

What does the city have to do with this?
I cannot imagine they are happy about it either. Seems to me the city works very hard to keep this the City of Power and Progress. Sometimes it is just out of their hands. Appleton is to blame and it it their choice to do this to the city of Columbus, not the other way around. In fact, finish reading the Telegram article and you will see some a quote from K C Beliz and Mr. Bell that say exactly that.

I think EGS is trying to milk the State and city for more money. Nobody gives a 15 month warning when closing a plant...NOBODY!! This is cheap dramatics hoping to garner free cash before the North Dakota/Montana oil fields and the new refinery get going in a year or two. One can't blackmail money out of the elected officials when times are good.

Let's hope that our elected officials and the Chamber have the smarts to bid good-bye to bad rubbish. We will never get a decent employer into that building if we don't get rid of the present one first.

For those of you I left behind in 1995, I am sorry that you went through the Mexico fiasco and all that followed, and that the management could never rise to the level of professionalism shown by their employees.

Remember, it is better to jump than be pushed.

As a spouse of an EGS employee and an ex employee myself, we decided that one of us should quit so we both would not be w/out a job. That was over 10 years ago. How sad that these wonderful hard working Americans got traded for cheaper foreign work. How ironic is it that the Hispanics come up here for good jobs and a better way of life and all the jobs are going South! All I can say is hang in there all you EGS employees, and remember - when one door closes- another one opens! God speed to you all!!

As a former 14 year employee at EGS,I can't say that Friday's announcement comes as much of a suprise. I got out back in Febuary, and could see the handwriting on the wall then, heck, I could see it even before that. I really think there has been a SERIOUS lack of competent management leadership at EGS since Rick Holley was transfered. Think what you want to about Rick, but anyone who worked at EGS during Rick Holley's tenure as plant manager knows that he at least seemed genuinely concerned for the emplyees,He tried to be straight with the employees, and it seemed that he at least tried to fight on behalf of his employees when it came to tough decisions: cutting hours, layoffs, etc. It also seemed that the corporate management back then still gave a damn about their workers, which is obviously a heck of a lot more than can be said now! To all of you who are still at EGS, my thoughts and prayers are with all of you and your families at this uncertain time. To the current management in Columbus, and Corporate in Rosemont: I hope you're happy with yourselves, because you're loosing the best, most dedicated group of workers you could have ever hoped to have. Let's see if you can say the same thing once you move everything south of the border.

It is sad for all of the workers at the plant. I must say it's ironic that a city which is run by Wal-Mart thinks this wouldn't happen to them. CHEAP GOODS ARE MADE SOMEWHERE AND IT IS NOT COLUMBUS, NE! Open your eyes people....if we want jobs to stay in this country we have to be ready to pay for the overhead costs of production.

A very mis-managed company. Everyone was told the last plant manager was terminated. I bet he just jumped ship when he had the chance.

I feel sorry for those who will be without a job. This company hasn't cared about its employees for years. Their local and corporate management were brainless stoges that sunk this ship. Good luck to the local company that just hired one of their top dogs. Based on his previous track record, you better mark your calendars too.

They need to redefine Treason in the Law Books of this country. The City of Columbus and the State of Nebraska, should give them a Discharge from town that says "This Award is granted for Conduct unbecoming of an American Citizen." The Quest for unreasonable Profits should be stigmatized like Usuary used to be. If you demonstrate unreasonable behaviour in the Army you are given a Dishonorable Discharge. I think there are a few C.E.O's that deserve a form of such a Discharge from American Commerce, unless they can demonstrate they are receiving a non-compensatory profit return.

Hmmm, why would a company give such a long notice??? EGS won't have enough key employees to keep the place open in a few months, as everybody will jump ship at the first opportunity. They are either going to close the plant much earlier than that, or they are blackmailing the state.

For those of you that are blaming the management I think most of the blame goes to unreasonable and burdensome mandates and taxes that elected politicians have put on private business. I sure do not stick up for corporatations that often because the people at the top do very little for all the money, but the government is the primary problem. Anyone who has voted for big goverment is to blame and that especially means anyone who voted Socialist Obama!

Regarding ADM being subsidized, if you are referring to the $.50 or so tax break per gallon, that goes to the oil company for every gallon of ethanol they use to blend gasoline. The benefit ADM has received is a congressional action mandating ethanol as the only approved oxidizing additive for gasoline. Therefore, they are trying to meet market demand. The ones benefiting are the farmers because of an increase demand in corn, therefore prices rise. Is this good or bad, I don't know.

Aug 10, 2009 4:11 PM
I see a lot of bashing towards white collar workers. I am one of those people at the corporate level and I sure am not a benefactor of this "little work for a lot of pay". I wish I got paid hourly what our plant workers got paid. When you are towards the top, it is expected you work 60 to 70 hours and you are SALARIED! For those of whom have never been salaried, you don't get paid anymore for working more hours. Also, a lot of us white collar workers have more than busted our butts through college and taking crappy internships to get where we are. I have so many friends that saw dollar signgs out of high school and took jobs in manufacturing. I am so glad I was broker for 6-7 years so I could get a college education! I think it would be best to close a plant that may not be productive or cost efficient than the entire company getting sent to bankruptcy.
Hasn't the move for blue collar work to Mexico been going on for years? Did anyone maybe think manufacturing is not a solid career choice?

"hard worker" while you are sitting in your office making more often than so stupid decisions for your company that usually only benefits you and your people, please then let us know what you think! I'm sure with all of those long hours that you don't get paid for, you still manage to make your 5 pm golf game. Not alot of people get the opportunity to be a broker and go to college and "work hard interning" so they can get an office job that gets better benefits, higher bonus', and salary. If you so want to know what hard work is truly all about then learn on the floor what you are making decisions about in your office. That's when you gain respect from your employees and for yourself.

I quit EGS in 2003 on my 5 year anniversary with the company. At that time, they dropped us from grade 6 pay to grade 3 or 4. After 5 years I would have been making less than when I started! The great movement of manufacturing had recently started going to Mexico, & we were to be proud of that! I have kept in close contact with my many friends from EGS over the years, & from what I hear, things have only gotten worse. I have read that many of you feel that this is a result of the current management. I disagree. The management at EGS has been poor for a very long time. Anyone that works of has worked there knows that you are no more than your employee ID#. No name, no humanity. I know this because when I worked there I got wrote up for having a miscarriage. Another co-worker got fired for having a problem pregnancy with twins. A few others for health problems. The list goes on. They didn't & don't care that they had & have dedicated workers. The ONLY thing that the see is the all mighty $. EGS = Everything Goes South! Why do many blame Columbus? Simply because Columbus allows things to happen in this town like letting WalMart decide what business comes into Columbus or not. For those of you that will be loosing your jobs, my heart goes out to you. As for your severence packages, I hope that they actually follow through on their promise for once - but I wouldn't count on it until I see it in my hand. Remember that as one door closes, another opens. Believe me, when the door closes on EGS it's a WONDERFUL sound!!! I hope that each & every one of you get a chance to SLAM that door on your way out!! in response to your response. i never said unions were the awnser. yes some unions are out of control but fact- union employees recieve 22% more pay than non union fact- 88% of surveyed union members are satisfied with their health care providers. fact they pay less in deductibles and in co pays on their health care insurance.unions are not good when they hold business by the cahones but local unions are effective because everybody knows everybody the relationships are on a more personal level and everyone is satisfied with the outcome. as far as subsidizies your represenitives voted for them. this is another example of people screaming for one thing and complaining when they get it. the minority say they want off fossil fuels so congress made bio innicietives to decrease demand for foriegn oil. there for they had to create a fake demand for something that wasnt really ever in demand to begin with. its all market manipulation, which is exactly why we are in this mess to begin with. fact- demo-rats are 68% more likly to instigate regulation than republi-con. and before you start the obamas the man conversation and GW was the idiot GW was a jackass in an elephant costume obamas just a jack a** in a jack a** costume. People hired after them in thier dept. r still workin, now tell me how the ----- does that work??? Laid how many people off and the yard dept is workin. 10 hrs a day getting prob. $20. a hr. for overtime if not more, again, how the ------does that work. So believe me they r not any better, and a lot of that can be traced back to supervisors, mangement or whatever. How can people sleep at night knowing that u totally messed up peoples lives unfairly. What happened to seniority?? I guess it does't exist any more. They thought that this would be the answer, and they lay off after only a year. Lets just hope that this is temp. and also very short lived. Good Luck To All

kelly,

I'm not sure how lucrative any proposed severance package would be, but I surely wouldn't pass up a viable job offer for it.

I also wouldn't put it past Appleton/EGS to dangle it out there and then find a reason not to pay it, given their past history, such as denying that there were any plans to move to Mexico when it leaked out prematurely.

To 'To hardworker'

Hardworker just mentioned that salaried employees dont get paid any overtime and sometimes forced to work 60 to 70 hrs. Who are you to question how hard they work or how many hrs they put in?

And Oh really can they make their 5 o'clock golf game? Does this mean that white collar workers have some magic ability to be in 2 places at once?

Just stop and think about it for a min. Someone always has to make the decisions, and the rest have to follow. Put yourself in the higher ups shoes and lay out a plan of how differently you would run the company. You probably would find that it is not as easy as it looks. You might even have to step on some people toes at times, and other times down right tick them off!

I know that the higher ups in the companies dont always make the right decison, if fact they sometimes make the down right idiotic decision, but someone had to make it right?
