No negatives ... what is good?

Monday, Jul 27, 2009 - 10:55:54 am CDT

We spent the last week discussing negativity. Now, let's look at positives. What's good or great about Greater Columbus? Don't bother to post anything negative ... it won't be approved!

Lots of beautiful parks, new walking trails, nice hospital, short commute to work, and close to a lot of major cities (Omaha-Kansas City Minneapolis, Denver...) There really is a lot of great things about this city!! Taco Johns and Runza!! (my out of state siblings miss those!!)
I kinda like it here

I've lived in Columbus all my life. Yes, there are some bad things about this town, but thats everywhere. There is always something to do here. You just have to use your head. Growing businesses are a major plus. We have 2 good places to buy 4-wheelers and accessories and other small ones. There's several hardware stores. Also alot more clothing stores have popped up. Kinda expensive though. We have a good movie theater and lots of movie rental outfits. And now the addition of the redbox movie rentals. We even have Gamestop. And those of you who complain about there not being enough places to eat are crazy. I eat out every day for lunch and I still have not eaten at them all. All in all there are to many good things about this town to list here. I can't think of anywhere else I would rather raise my 3 kids. But even I have my gripes. Everyone does. Its just that this is a good place to vent. See...Columbus telegram helps people feel better!

The walking trails are great - would love to see more.
Softball, soccer complexes among the best in the state.
Nice golf courses and a water park that is great - could use a pool.
Drive from one end of city to the other in 10 minutes (except from 3:00-5:00pm)
Short drive to major shopping in Lincoln or Omaha.
Wonderful place to raise children.
Will have a new viaduct within a few months and another new one in a couple years (finally, but it will be great).
Crime rate is very low!
and finally - I wouldn't live anywhere else.
Nice

Columbus is a great town to live in! Everywhere is going to have good and bad things about it. It's too bad that a lot of people have to always point out only the bad things. I enjoy living in this town being close to everything. Having a big group of friends that last a lifetime! I haven't ever lived anywhere other than here but I don't plan on changing that either! (It's nice to read a positive post for once! Makes this gloomy day seem brighter!!)

Things I appreciate: Pulling up to a place of business and walking inside - no long walk, parking the car etc... Being able to run 5 errands and not leaving a 2 block square area. The YMCA being reasonably priced and something for everyone. (A single youth membership is more expensive in other communities than a family membership here). Enjoying the simple things, Columbus Days, the County Fair, the horse races and the ice cream cones at the races (none better!) The major industries in town keeping unemployment to a low and money in people's pockets for the necessities of life. The support and respect all dominations of faith have for each other. We've lived here for 30 years and Columbus has been good to us!
great golfing

Columbus has a nice selection of golf courses for anybody at any skill.
I especially enjoy Quail Run and believe we are lucky to have such a nice public course.

Columbus is a quiet, peaceful town. No better place to raise a family. Good schools and a good work ethic still exist here.

Services provided by the City are good, particularly the CPD.

I wish everyone would have a chance to live with their families in another place besides Columbus because this is a great place to live. We moved here with our kids (16 yrs ago) and they have grown up great and the schools are so much better then any other state. There are alot of other places to live but lets be thank-ful and find the good in where we do live because you will come back after you have lived some where else! One of my children did get married and moved away had 2 children and guess what next month after moving to another state she is moving "home" so her family will get a chance and understand what it is to live "The Good Life". We all have the option to move so I wish you would and then you would see how really good we do have it!

Slowly but surely we are getting more places to fish. The new hospital lake is on its way. The just stocked Lake North with more sauger. The new Leigh Dam. I hear they are considering opening the lake across the tracks from Wagners.

I know the headgates is in Genoa, but what a great place to ride an ATV within such a close drive to Columbus.

Every little bit helps make it a little better place to live.

Others on the top of my list that I am forever grateful - Loup Public Power District and NPPD. We have one of the most economical and reliable electrical systems in the country. The Columbus Police and Fire Department - with families of their own and often "home grown", they understand the needs of the community. I also feel quite fortunate that the hospital is just a few blocks away.

When I was single, the Pawnee Bar was it for me in Columbus. Now married with kids, Columbus has a place probably not widely known. That is Heartland Gymnastics. Our 4 year old loves it.

Also basically a clean town for the most part. Nice parks and downtown is historic and still loaded with shopping even though many predicted its demise with the new wal mart supercenter.

I really believe we have the best Godfathers Pizza & Daylight Donuts and Runza in the state. Thanks to Loup Power we have some of the cheapest electric rates in the US. We don't have to drive far to get to the great outdoors for hunting or ATV riding. And if we steal the credit from Duncan then we make the best dressing Dorthy Lynch the bottle says Columbus anyway so got to count its still in Platte County !

I love this town! (and I've lived a lot of places big and small)

AMAZING COMMUTE!
I drive from one end of town (stires lake) across the tracks to work on the north east side of town. It takes me on average only 12 minutes to get to work.

RECREATION AND WELLNESS OPPORTUNITY ABOUND!
We have so many options for lakes, golf courses, rivers, parks Columbus has 8 miles trails for walking, riding, running and we'll add several more miles in the coming year www.columbusnetrails.com

OPPORTUNITY!
Our community is the most industrialized city per capita in the state, contributing to our relative low unemployment in Nebraska, the state with the lowest unemployment in the US

Columbus has a great deal of "outdoorsy" things to do. 4 golf courses, parks galore, the river is accessible, Lake North has some nice walking trails as well as the other trails in town, lots of lakes close by, and a walkable downtown. This is stuff that people take for granted here.

Sure we could use more shopping but I think people could find some of the things they want if they would give some of the stores here a shot. Many people say they want a Kohls or something and so would I've also found many good deals at the Penneys here.

All in all, Columbus could improve (and it's great they do have a plan to improve) but it's already very nice the way it is.

close to shopping in Norfolk, Omaha, Lincoln and Grand Island. Great restaurants like Duster's and El Tapatio.
Wonderful quilt shop on main street! Great antiques stores and Good Will is one of the best in the state! Valentinos is also one of the best in the state.
Our chamber of commerce really cares about their members, Lots of good friends, oh and Heartland Gymnastics is great also!

For a mid size town, Columbus is fairly quiet. That's what I like most. It always seems the bigger the town, the more of a mess it's in. Columbus is just the right size where you can find most anything your looking for, and if you don't find it, it's a short trip in any direction to one of the other major cities to shop or dine out. Crime in town is low enough to tolerate. It's the kind of town where you don't fear stepping outside to relax on your porch for hours enjoying the day.... which I do quite frequently.

#3 Its better than North Bend or Schuyler.

#2 The diversity the hispanics bring is also good, along with the food.

#1 Pawnee Plundge has good talent on certain days.

Without a doubt the horse races are the best thing about Columbus. Thank god we have something that Moser and company have nothing to do with. Sorry, just had to throw throw that in! ha ha

*Gottberg brewery!!!
*Several lakes
*Good water park
*Great park system
*Improve trail system
*A downtown nightlife (yes, 11th St isn't ideal, but not very many towns the size of Columbus have so many bars/clubs that are within walking distance of each other!

The trails in and around Columbus are a huge benefit. (I hope someday they're connected.) I like to look at the historical buildings and houses. The small town atmosphere keeps things fairly simple. The new Lost Creek Arterial works great for me going to work.

Tastiest Topping

I would agree that Dorothy Lynch is a great part of Columbus. You can put it on almost anything. It's my favorite topping for frozen pizza. Seriously, try it, makes even the cheapest pizza taste better.

I think the multi-ethnic diversity is broadening our perception of what the rest of the world is like. The exposure will give the next generation a more tolerant view of their neighbors.
