I live in North Texas BUT I sure hope the Huskers Whup on those texas teams The Big 12 is BY FAR the toughest conf. LOTS and LOTS of talent in the Big 12
NE rotates around football
Jul 13, 2009 6:17 PM
This state is crazy!! Why is everything rotated around NE football? What a wonderful day it would be if NE was notorious for it's Academic Scholars (high-achieving)High School seniors.
Whom had brains and never stepped on a field.

That's funny. But I think they're referring to the gum.

Why does NU football take such a hit for being "Dumb Jocks"? Take a look at the number of Academic All-Americans that NU Football has produced. NU is one of the leaders in this area in the country. People may complain about the salary that the head coaches receive, but there are a lot of other sports that are played that wouldn't be if it weren't for the money that football brings in. In a state that has precious little to brag about, we should be glad that the University has been able to field the caliber of team it has over the last 40 years, oh yea, except during the Callahan years!!!

Right back in the mediocre bin. First of all, the Big 12 North will continue to be dominated by the Big 12 South for the forseeable future. Think of the Big 12 championship as the right to play a team from texas or oklahoma for second place.

Second, the Husker will get everyone's hopes up by winning their first three games against WYoming Institute of Diesel Technology, Providence College of Hair Design, and Montana State Tech. Then, when they start playing REAL teams, the losses will stack up.

THe athletes are gone. The days of the red headed savior and his one-eyed gum-chewing title runs or OVER.

I wouldn't expect them to go to the National Championship. No way they look as good as Florida does this year. I would expect NU to be much better than last year. Suh is called by some as the #1 pre-season defensive college football player for this year. The D-line isn't too shabby either. The staff is the same as last year.

Big 12 north champ is up for grabs and NU has the best chance of claiming that.

The 3 sun belt teams they play aren't teams to underestimate either.

You guys don't think that a stadium that sells out for nearly 300 consecutive games isn't going to return to produce a championship level football program sooner or later?

I hope they come back strong but even if they don't I will still back them 100 percent.

They will go 10-2 with the 2 losses coming to TT & OU they will win the north & lose the Big XII title game.

"You guys don't think that a stadium that sells out for nearly 300 consecutive games isn't going to return to produce a championship level football program sooner or later?"

Sooooo, just by the amount of people that attend the games, the Skers will win a title? Does loud cheering correlate to victories? If so, then what's the story the last few years? That's the stupidest rationale I think I've ever read.

That stadium has sold out repeatedly for one reason and one reason only: THERE'S NOTHING ELSE TO DO OR FOLLOW IN NEBRASKA!!!!!!!!!!!

Good lord, people, give it up already.

I'm just saying fan support is bigger than any other college football team. It helps a lot with recruiting and NU will not be able to bounce back to a top-notch team without great recruits.

There is plenty other sports to follow in Nebraska. Lincoln Saltdogs, NU's other sports, Creighton, Lincoln Stars Hockey, Omaha Lancers hockey, and the Tri-Cities have a hockey team too. Yeah, they may not be the best but don't tell me there are no other enjoyable games that you can get tickets for.

I could see the season ending the way Smarty Jones described.

I disagree Cherry. The Husker VB team will be very tough this year.

Jul 14, 2009 2:22 PM
Damn right selling out can help produce a Nat'l championship! Imagine it, you're a highly prized recruit and you come in to that atmosphere and you're not impressed? I say HELP because that wouldn't be the only reason for someone to come here. Obviously ther are other factors like academics, playing time, etc., but it does play a role.
Top 20 team
Jul 14, 2009 2:47 PM
The 'Skers should be better this year, and that's coming off 9-4 a year ago. Va. Tech on the road should be a loss, and another slip-up along the way is certainly possible.

I'm crossing my fingers for an Oklahoma upset in Lincoln, but more than likely, we would just end up having to play them (or Texas) again the Big XII title game...which would be tough.

My guess is 11-3, a north title, no more blowouts and a top 20 finish to end the season.

Is this a Columbus thing that we started calling them the 'Skers? I live in Lincoln and have never heard that before.

Defense will be improved. Offense may struggle some with new QB. Look for a more ground oriented attack early on to let Zac Lee get his feet wet.

9 wins for sure
10 wins if things go right
Hopefully a Big 12 championship game appearance and decent bowl. BCS Bowl may be a stretch this year. Good things are going to happen with Bo and company the next few years.

Bo has this team headed in the right direction. September 5th at 6pm cant get here soon enough!!!

And if you dont care for Nebraska football dont make a comment on here cause you are going to get a BIG RED BEATDOWN!!!!

Sorry Tim, but I agree with Cherry. NU VB success will hinge on a healthy Kori Copper, the lone returning senior. Lindsay Licht still has to test her surgically repaired shoulder and Tara Mueller must become more reliable in her play. Coach Cook had a #2 national recruiting class and the future looks very good for NU Volleyball. ROOF ROOF ROOF

I expect a 10-2 or 9-3 season. I expect us to lose to OU. Virginia Tech will be a challenge away. KU, MU an Colorado on the road will be a challenge as well.

I see defensive improvement and a solid running game. I see some struggles this year in the passing game.
To ok - Calling them Skers
Jul 14, 2009 6:43 PM
I was the one that wrote 'Skers, and I live in Lincoln as well (although I'm from Columbus originally). My friends have called them that for years.

It'll be just like last year by the time it gets to the Colorado game - a couple loser teams struggling to stay relevant on ABC at 2:30 p.m.

Pederson and Cali and those of you that blindly supported them have done unrepairable damage to Osborn's program. I very much doubt that things can ever be the same. The rest of the Big 12 copied our mobile QB style of offence and Calli thought he could win with a QB with two left feet and no defensive athletes. What an idiot. Record crowds at Calli's first spring game shows you were all a bunch of idiots!

To ok:

I lived in Lincoln for 10 years and heard the term "skers" just as often as "cornhuskers". I HATE the term Huskers and that stupid logo with huskers written in cursive. It's the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Remember when Herbie Huskers was around? You know, the big, burly farm boy with a corncob in his pocket, a football in his arm, and him giving the sign with his hands signifying that everything is O.K. (it was also a gang sign for the Bloods in the 80's and 90's)? Now, Nebraska has that stupid 8 year old, blown up, little boy. Yea, real intimidating. Bring back the term Cornhuskers as well as Herbie. And if the Cornhuskers are undefeated when they match up against another highly rated opponent at home, how about bringing on the red pants with the red jerseys like ol' Dr. Tom Osborne did for the BIG GAMES. Just a thought.
Oh, and one more thing. Let's make a rule about wearing those stupid corncob hats. If you are over 12 years old and are caught wearing one of those and you are not extremely intoxicated, you receive a lifelong ban from Memorial Stadium! Who's with me? Come on, we're all going streaking! Everbody's doin it!

Will they be back? Back from what? Where did they go?

Jul 15, 2009 7:40 PM
Seriously though, I thought they were back last year. We may never see the likes of the latter half of the Osborne Era, but it the kids play hard every week, I'll be proud...win or lose.

Bill Calahan could never teach "heart" and "tradition". Bo Pelini can.
Hey paulcan
Jul 15, 2009 9:54 PM
Hitting your players on the sidelines, SCREAMING until an embelism pops in your head and swearing like a drunk sailor is restoring "heart" and "tradition?"

Pelini is a classless clown.
Hey paulcan
Jul 15, 2009 9:55 PM
Seriously though,......clown!
DICK
Jul 15, 2009 11:55 PM
8 wins and 4 losses would be a very good season.
paulcan
Jul 16, 2009 8:35 AM
Sure lets judge Pelini after one season.

At least the "drunken clown" got more out of Calahan's players than Calahan did. Didn't you watch any of the games over the past two years. A blind man could see the difference. Remember Okie St in 2007???

Don't believe Osborne didn't have assistants hitting and cussing the players 20 years ago. Its a physical game, not a church service.

Pelini has reminded them they play FOR Nebraska, not AT Nebraska. Thats the heart and tradition, I'm speaking of. That, and giving it a 100% maximum effort.

I'll be at the stadium supporting the Huskers when they come to Boulder this year. Hope NU is triumphant. I can’t wait…football is almost here.

Obviously Hey paulcan was never in the halftime locker room when D-Coordinator Charlie McBride was blistering the paint off the walls with HIS charged speeches. And he wasn’t saying “golly darn guys, we need to play better for gosh sakes”. Bo is fine.
Nope
Jul 17, 2009 4:51 PM
I have to say that there is to much inexperience at QB and WR. I would say 5 loses at the least.
Skers Been Around not you
Jul 17, 2009 5:09 PM
Heck, I worked with a guy back in 1998 in northern Iowa that called them the Sker's. Then have Heard it off and on since then. No it is not a Columbus thing. Unlike you the nick name Skers have been around.
The Pedi and Calli Disgrace
Jul 18, 2009 8:24 AM
I agree the people that blindly followed Pedi & Calli did do irrepairable harm to the Cornhusker Football program. In fact, why is Perlman still around? He is the one that allowed this to happen in the first place. If anyone remembers the news conference Pedi had annoumcing the firing of Frank Solich. In this news conference Pedi said something along the lines of, "when I made this desision I didn't like the direction the football program was headed. I felt there needed to be some change at the top. I this and I that." Then fast forward 7 weeks and still no coach hire. Pedi had a news conference trying to cwash rummors that proved to be true - where four coaches had turned him down for the head coaching position because no relevent coach in his right mind would take a job with a program where the previous coach was fired for a 10 - 3 season. Pedi said "when we made this desision we didn't like the direction the football program was headed. we felt there needed to be some change at the top. we this and we that." He was trying to share the blame. I saw right through his BS. Then along comes December 31 and Calli gets canned from the Raiders for going 1 - 12 after being in the Super Bowl the previous year with Jon Grodens team. Calli even said in a news conference that he had to have the stupidest football team in America - that is a good team building concept. At the time it was serindipidous for both Pedi and Calli. Pedi was looking for a football coach and Calli was looking for a job. January 9 Calli was announced as the new footbal coach. I saw it right there that Calli was a phoney with his stupid nervous twitch that proved to be unbearable while watching them on TV. Then after loosing games by uncomfortable margins he said (another team building concept of Calli's) that "he didn't have qualified players to play is kind of football". Then look what Pelini and company did with Calli's players!!! He made them into a respectable team in less than 8 months. Pedi and Calli what a disgrace to the Cornhusker Nation. The Huskers will be a surprise team this year. They will finish in the top 15 teams.

So all you Calli and Pedi Kool - Aid drinkers need to find another team to root for. The Nebraska Cornhusker Football Program doesn't need or deserve fans like you
Ready for some football- Husker style
Jul 19, 2009 12:43 AM
Hey- I did support Nebraska during the Calli years, because I am a true fan, and would support them at 0-12.
'Skers has been around, but cant say I care for it personally. But I dont care what you call them, as long as its in support!
I say back to the 9-3 finish of old, win the North, lose the Big 12 Champ. (this year) until we develop some skill positions.
Go Huskers!
-BTW- Pelini IS a class act, and a TRUE Husker.

To all that are talking smack about the Huskers. You must come from a state that doesn't have the word family in it. Here in Nebraska We are family and family sticks together through thick and thin. You must not have that there where you come from. Well We are proud of our coach and his staff and most important the team. Well the way i see it we are just going to have to come and smack you down on the field and show you what respect means and family unity means. To all the smackers from what i have been reading here is a whole lot of people worried when we come knocking on your door and send you home crying. Get ready the Big Red machine is on its way.
