Columbus man gets 2-4 years for drug conviction

COLUMBUS -- A 30-year-old Columbus man called “an apple that didn’t fall far from the tree’’ was sentenced to prison Wednesday in Platte County District Court in connection with a series of drug deals in the community last fall.

Judge Robert Steinke sentenced Jacob Helkenn to two to four years in prison for delivery of a controlled substance (methamphetamine) stemming from a Nov. 10 drug sale.

“You have had a pattern of drug distribution in the community over a long period of time,’’ the judge told Helkenn in rejecting the defendant’s plea for a sentence of probation. “You are unlikely to succeed outside of a structured correctional setting.’’
