What is your company's policy on Internet use at work? Do you use the Internet at work? Do you think personal Internet use is abused at your workplace?

I see absolutely no abuse in the workplace. In fact, I think...

Oh, oh. I gotta go!

Personal use of the internet is allowed where I work. While I do not believe abuse is occurring at my workplace, it (abuse)can come in many forms; overuse to the point it interferes with daily work, surfing to unauthorized sites, downloads that infect the system, etc. And if this is occurring, then abuse is occurring and the person(s) should be reprimanded based upon the level of abuse.

if they made internet history files part of the annual review process, the telegram blogs would be silent.

very seldom do i use the internet for personal use at work, but i am a minority in that regard.

Only at the news sites, email on my smart phone during breaks and lunch. Sirius internet radio during work. (I would like to read the whole stories on this website.

I use encrypted remote access programs and log in to my home computer. My home computer screen appears on my screen. There I go anywhere I want on the home internet and the company never knows where I go or what I do.

Most of the time, I'm searching for a better job and applying for jobs.

My work place won't allow it because of the bad apples out there that did abuse it. It would be nice to have access to more than just emails. I would never abuse it ;)

I have been in the IT support field for ten years. I have worked for several companies in the area, both large and small. And my general opinion after all that time is this: a company that worries over-much about about employee internet usage is usually indicitive of a toxic, controlling, suspicious workplace environment.

I once worked for one of the largest employers in the area. The pres was a fundie Christian and the HR person he hired was also one and also a personal friend of his. This HR person was TOTALLY OBSESSED with what "the help" (as she referred to employees) was doing on the internet---along with worrying how long they took bathroom breaks! As the IT person, I was actually asked by this HR person to snoop on people and try to catch them "doing things on the internet" and "who was on the internet too much".

Surfing the internet is no different then daydreaming or doing some office gossip. As IT person, I myself have done plenty of "cruising" and it is through that I have discovered some of my best troubleshooting techniques and ideas. I would avoid working for any company that over-emphasizes internet usage. It's usually an indicator of not a good place to work.

I know of a few people who are at work and on the internet- well, facebook all day long... it seems to be working out okay for them, and they get their work done, and the boss doesn't complain. They love their job, and go to work everyday. I see no problem with it, and I think that the companies that allow their employees to do so get much more respect from them.

I cannot believe that the Columbus Telegram is now trying to charge money for online edition. I guess i will be getting my news elsewhere. I guess i always get my news elsewhere as this paper is not worth 10 cents a day. What a joke.

To ARE YOU KIDDING:
I appreciate the Columbus Telegrams web site! They are only charging if you want to view the entire paper online. Do you think their staff work for free?
They can't provide you everything for free.

I'd say the number of people looking at the Columbus Telegram at work is going to drop now that they charge for it.

What if you work from home and use the internet as your means of getting that work done? Well that's my case and I suppose I abuse it since I'm self employed.
