Johnson on SCS dean’s list
ST. CLOUD, Minn. -- St. Cloud State University has announced names of students earning placement on the spring semester dean’s list.
Among those honored is Rebecca Jo Johnson, college of science and engineering, nursing.
To be eligible for the honor, students must have a grade point average of 3.75 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
Five get degrees at Hastings College
HASTINGS -- Jeffrey Hartman, Emilie Powers, Katherine Rasby, Ashley Strehl and William Kramer, all from Columbus, graduated from Hastings College May 16 at the college’s 123rd commencement ceremonies.
Hartman graduated cum laude and received a bachelor of arts degree with distinction in biology.
Powers received a bachelor of arts degree in English and music, earning high distinction in English, and Rasby received a bachelor of arts degree with high distinction in elementary education. Strehl received a bachelor of arts degree with distinction in media production, and Kramer received a bachelor of arts degree in psychology.
High distinction is awarded to seniors who have earned a 3.85-4.0 grade point average in their major area of study. Distinction is awarded to seniors with at least a 3.7 grade point average in their major.
Area students get NU scholarships
LINCOLN -- The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced the awarding of nearly 2,000 scholarships to seniors at Nebraska high schools.
The total potential value of the scholarships is approximately $11.7 million.
Canfield Scholarships offer full-time students a one-year award of $1,000, and Nebraska Top Scholars will receive at least $1,500 per year in additional scholarship awards from the university or the University of Nebraska Foundation, provided they meet renewal criteria each year. An individual student can qualify for one Regents, Nebraska Achievement, David Distinguished or Canfield scholarship. Pepsi, Chancellor's Leadership Class and University Honors Program scholarships may be combined with other awards.

Two named Elks Teens of Month
Sarah Jane Wheeldon, a senior at Schuyler Central High School, and Molly Renee McPhillips, a senior at Humphrey St. Francis High School, have been selected as the Elks Teenagers of the Month.
Wheeldon has been involved in FFA for four years, student council for three years, science and math club, S-Club, basketball, band and the National Honor Society. She was awarded outstanding golfer in her sophomore year and medaled in cross country and track. She has operated “Sarah’s Lawn Service” and “Sarah’s Greenhouse” for several years, and worked for the City of Schuyler as a lifeguard and swimming instructor.
Outside of school, Wheeldon has been involved in Girl Scouts for 10 years, piano, dance, Sunday school and vacation Bible school, and member of 4-H. She has also volunteered as a youth basketball coach, Red Cross bell ringer, AYSO soccer coach and referee, Colfax Theater volunteer, and Adopt-A-Highway.
