COLUMBUS -- A late-night prank over the weekend didn’t appear to kick up much fuss heading into Monday’s Class B state championship soccer showdown between the Columbus Discoverers and Scotus Central Catholic Shamrocks.
The midnight caper, reminiscent of a similar incident about a month ago at an Omaha high school, didn’t hog the spotlight from the players in a superbly played overtime title tilt won by Scotus 1-0.
Columbus Police have identified three suspects in the early Sunday incident that left a full-grown dead hog at Scotus’ eastside entrance, allowing with a spray-paint message exhorting the Discoverers to win state on the doors.
None of the suspects have any association with either schools’ soccer team, Police Capt. Todd Thalken said. The suspects, two boys and a girl, are all students at Columbus High School.
The players for the Shamrocks and Discoverers are all friends who have played on youth soccer teams together for years, Thalken said. “We don’t want this incident to take away from what the kids have been doing in the state tourney.”
The captain said the suspects in the prank, reported by a neighbor of the school, will be cited in the case, with littering, disorderly conduct or criminal mischief among the possible charges.
The dead animal and spray-paint were cleaned up and removed before churchgoers arrived for services at St. Bonaventure Church Sunday morning.

"The pig sounds like a prank and the spray paint takes it too far"??? I hope you meant it the other way around. Let's hope the pig wasn't killed specifically for this so-called "prank"!Pig in a Poke

Maybe if the parents didn't endorse this kind of behavior through their comments the kids wouldn't act on it.guy

the pig was already dead when they picked it up. spray paint was not used on the doors, it was window chalk. telegram needs to get its facts rightFAHQ

I rather see kids doing something like the dead pig caper. Then out racinga car, having a beer party or fighting.
Kids for years have been doing things like this in fun. I used to put car bombs on my co workers cars. As a female I used to smoke a cigar were I could be seen by some up tight older lady. It was all in fun. Sure the kids are in trouble but this is not a big deal unless they stole and killed the pig. I bet it was already dead.

This got taken way to far, Columbus high and their stupid behavior policy is ridiculous. I even go to this school and I am not upset at all, it was a joke and parents need to learn that kids are kids. No damage was done, the pig was done, Scotus won the game. End it.Husker

Does any one know what was written on the doors??. Is that why people are upset??.hmm

sounds to me like a friendly prank. if they are all friends, i'm sure scotus would find it funny. and i'm sure columbus would find it funny if scotus had done something similar. better than gang activity around town.An outsider

It sounds like a stupid prank. We were teens during the 60's and some of the pranks were outrageous. Things are different now. Back then, the police sent the kids home to their parents and nothing public became of it. Now days, kids need to be aware that the consequences are much more serious because they get to face the police and their parents! My vote - let it go!cool person
May 19, 2009 3:04 PM
yes it was more than just fun and games.. if you let the teens get away with this then they will think they can get away with anything and take it too far. And there could be serious damage, injuries, maybe deaths. and yes the words on the doors were rude and inappropriate.MisterKnowItAll
May 19, 2009 3:48 PM
A prank is a prank and kids will be kids. The only trouble is next time they always have to do something a little bit better and when does the foolishness stop. The bad thing - none of the kids involved play soccer for either school.
Hopefully the law will follow through with the charges and prosecute the individuals for their stupid prank..

Seems like a great opportunity for some community service. Maybe the pranksters can do some yard work around the Scotus buildings. To "Guy": Why blame the Telegram for not getting the facts right? Is there some reason to not believe the police report or the police captain? Do you think reporters just make up facts? Kind of like the national media getting blistered for "swine flu" references. Not something that would have been created out of the air. Someone in an official position, such as the CDC, would have had to make the reference.

what a bunch of complainers. if that's the worst that happens in the course of a day, it's been a good day. furthermore, since everybody and their dog thinks they can get "swine flu" from a pig, the dead hog wasn't worth a damn thing, anyway.
congratulations, mass hysteria and media frenzies save the day again.

Funny!?! I don't see anything funny about calling students Baggers, pigf****ers, or pictures describing what is meant by baggers.I am embarrased to say I went to CHS and couldn't be happier that I didn't send my child there.
What is funny is the CHS parents that thought it was a terrible act when they assumed it was a Lakeview student because they are the only people with access to pigs. Now that it has proven to be CHS students it is just a silly prank. What hypocrits!!!

Here's my recommendation:Nip it! Nip it in the bud. It may start as a simple hog, but before you know it, these kids will move on to cattle and horses. Nip it in the bud, I tell ya!
Wondering
May 19, 2009 5:01 PM
Where does one get a full-grown dead hog?How much is it worth?
Was it stolen? Or did somebody just go out and kill one of their own hogs for the prank? If so...that's one expensive prank.
Reminds me of the incident about 30 years ago when one fine morning the words "CHS Seniors" were spray-painted on the wall at Scotus. The next morning, it had changed to "CHS Seniors...Suck".

Amazing but false "The midnight caper, reminiscent of a similar incident about a month ago at an Omaha high school." You would think that the author of this story would check a few facts. It didnt happen in Omaha. It happened in Lincoln at another CATHOLIC high school, Pius X. General consensus is that Pius students did it themselves.girly

i do attend scotus, but to tell you the truth, it was just a prank. i agree that it did go to far, and as there school are they going to punish them??? it doesnt seem like it. as a student at scotus, i believe that if anyone did that to chs or to lakeview as a "prank" we would have an assembly or something and get a talk. i would know, cause stuff has happened. overall, we are kids, but there is a time where we all have to grow up, i mean honestly.. they went to all that trouble and they didnt even win.

What ever happened to the word respect here. It seems like many in the community are OK with this kind of activity, intead of promoting a mutual respect between 2 high schools in the community. Why do I get the feeling that if tables were turned and it was Scotus kids pulling the prank on CHS, those kids from Scotus would be absolutely blasted by their behavior?
I do not know what was written on the doors but my guess is we will all soon find out through the grape-vine. If it was vulgar comments, then I highly doubt that it was intended as a laughing 'friendly' manner.

here's what really happened: an (already dead) pig was found, placed near scotus' main entrance, WINDOW CHALK was used to write something on the windows and that was it. it was a prank and it didn't cause any permanent damage so give the pranksters a consequence and let it blow over.az

ok... but "littering" with a dead pig infront of a school is inapropriate... and writing what they wrote on the window... weather it was window chalk or spray paint.. was definately unessisary... what was written was NOT appropriate at all!wow
May 19, 2009 8:44 PM
ok columbus telegram...slander at its best..spray paint? i am friends with the suspects and it was just window chalk big whoop! wow its easily washed off by wiping it down with water...this is all getting taken absoutly overboard a harmless prank by a few highschool kids and they are getting worse punishments than if they had gotten an m.i.p? what kind of message does this send to the columbus youth...absoutley rediculouswow

K prank is a prank but seriously I dont think that was needed to be called for because think about it but that is trespassing on to other property that does not belong to you and then for it to be kids that dont even play soccer. Instead of mdonig pranks why cant people just be happy that both teams even made it there. Plus the swine flu does not come from a pig!!!!!!!writer

To CHS Alumni/SCC parent:There are plenty of good kids that come from both CHS AND SCC! There are also PLENTY OF BAD APPLES that come from both schools, just because you pay for your kids to go to school where they have to wear uniforms and have no freedom of expression, does not make you better than I, a CHS 2006 alumni. Nor does it make you better than my parents who chose for me to go to that school.
Laughing at everyone going overboard over a stupid pig
May 20, 2009 2:48 AM
Wow really guys? Are we 5? Why is everyone on here and in general making a big deal of this. It's a prank by a few kids big whoop. When I was a kid(which wasn't that long ago), I did stuff 10 times worse than this and all I did was get sent home to be grounded by my parents. What happened to having a little fun in life? The laws these days have taken the fun and adventure of being a kid. Can't even pull a simple prank without being treated like a criminal. Laws these days don't make sense sometimes. This isn't Mike Vick and killing dogs. Yet Columbus treats it in a similar manner with their police action. I tell ya that education system is getting to administrators heads. Things in school are taken way too seriously anymore. It was a stupid pig put in a front of a school with window chalk. All you have to do is throw the big away and wash the chalk away. Can Scotus not afford a scrubber and some soap? My golly parents, teachers, police, etc. make it much harder on themselves by making things harder for everyone involved. Just let it go. The kids didn't kill the pig. Maybe all of you need to quit watching Mike Vick stories on TV.chs grad

This is the funniest thing i have heard of since i graduated from CHS, I thnk the innocent prank is no big deal, we did alot worse when i was in school.. As for the scotus being called baggers, That name has been around since my dad graduated from CHS in 1975, just like Lakeview was called cow pie high, its a name not a refelecton on the students. seriously its all in good fun.Get A Grip and Count Our Blessings

We need to thank our blessings that so far as a community we have made it through proms, graduations, and various sports celebrations etc... without any youth tragedies. Keep our fingers crossed, school is getting out and I doubt the celebrations are over. Lets pray this is all the community has to chatter about.hmm
May 20, 2009 8:54 AM
i never went to any of the three columbus schools and i would think it's a silly prank no matter what school it happened to, so that doesn't affect my opinion just because CHS did it to scotus. i've heard of way worse and people thought those were funny pranks............
May 20, 2009 9:28 AM
If it was just the window chalk that would have been one thing, but the dead pig and the vulgar language took it a bit to far. The reason it is getting so much publicity is because of the pig and the language. If they would have just wrote CHS is gonna win state soccer that would have been alright and been a harmless prank. They must have been really smart kids to do it on a busy street where people could see it plus right where there are cameras watching them through the doors.Count Your Blessings
May 20, 2009 10:04 AM
Please, please....remember this was a prank by three stupid kids who probably haven't been to a soccer game all year and just used the State Finals as an excuse to cause some mischief. Their intent was to get the town talking about the incident and lo and behold -here we go!! I agree with a previous blogger - we have made it through a high school year without any major incidents, or worse - deaths. Let's be thankful.
Congrats to Scotus on their Championship - let then enjoy their time in the spotlight and move on, please.

Well... first off: IT WAS A PRANK. im not defending anyone. CHS students should know better. what is done is done, punish them, get over it. and TWO: it did not get out of hand... seriously!!! the only reason it is such a big deal is because everyone has to talk about it. yes, anyone talking about it should check their sources before they jump to conclusions.HERES THE DEAL: Scotus students seem to be fine with it for the most part, CHS students get along with Scotus students. PUNISH THE KIDS AND FORGET IT!!!!

Stupid kids pranks get more interest and comments than an attempted murder by a gang drive by. I think that says a lot about how this town is continuing to get numbed by the increasing street violence. That is problem in the larger cities like Omaha and that seems to be the strong trend here in Columbus. Look the other way as long as it is not on your street.what about bob

Wow! This is mostly to all of you older people writing in and parents who are glad they didn’t send their kids to CHS! Come on! Are you kidding me! Not a single person can tell me that Scotus is all perfect kids. They do things you just don’t hear about it. Yes the profanity on the windows in WINDOW CHALK was taking it a little far considering it’s a catholic school. But do you think that scotus kids don’t curse?! If so you need to be around them more in an environment where they are with their peers. This is something that I would rather see 100% more then some of the other crap that has been going on in this town in the last year! Those of you bashing Lakeview: seriously leave them out of this! It was a friendly prank between two schools where none of the kids seem to retaliate on it! You have students posting comments on here about it and how they aren’t upset and it’s just a prank!
No one school is better then the other you just think it is b/c you have to pay more to send your kid to Scotus and the kids know that they are no better then any of the other two high schools and they have friends in those schools. Sounds to me like a bunch of parents over reacting and being nieve.
The thing here is they are kids and kids will do stupid things and make mistakes. It’s apart of life and a learning experience. They will get in trouble and I am sure they will look back on this some day and think “man that was pretty stupid of us to do, and we were pretty immature about it.” I am sure you have all done something stupid in your life time and realized it down the road.
Oh I am not ashamed CHS alumni!

I graduated in the early 90's from outside of columbus(and am a practicing Catholic). It was the same then with Scotus students. God i must be bored. I am actually reading and commenting on all this dumb as*ed crap being posted about a freaking dead pig. Columbusnites really need to get a life. When we were kids we drug a haystack into town onto main street and set it on fire, Remember tossing a dead skunk in the principals car, and stuffing potatoes up the exhaust of the local cop car. So yeah maybe times have changed, and kids aren't allowed to have fun and pull pranks anymore, and every kid is an angel, and there is no such thing as gangs, and clouds are made of cotton candy, and we don't have to pay taxes,,, get the drift. Face reality and don't get your panties in a bunch over some good old school rivalry. The kids are being made to answer to it, so let it go and move on... Geessss..A-NON-MOUSE

I feel that the punishment does not fit the crime. There was more than one individual involved in this prank and only one of them is being punished. I think the others who were involved need to man up and admit their wrong doing and not just let their buddy take the fall. Furthermore certain administration should realized that when you're young you do stupid things. Were you punished so severely for being a kid?

It is very disturbing to read many of these comments here. I've read through them all pretty well and nobody from Scotus ever said their kids are perfect. I myself send my kids there and have never heard that from any parents there. I am also a blue collar worker that graduated from one of the other schools in Columbus. I'm finding that most of the kids parents in my kids class didn't attend Scotus themselves. Most of them graduated from another school in Columbus or outside of Columbus. I think there is a certain amount of pride when sending your kids to a private school and it has nothing to do with them being perfect. It has everything to do with them having smaller class sizes and allowing religion to be part of their lives, as we are ALL sinnners. This is our choice to do this as it was my parents choice to send me to public schools. I agree with most of the folks on here in regards to comments from parents making things worse. One of my kids closest friends is from CHS and they both attend events at each of the others schools. This is great and should be encouraged by parents. Look closely at the situation, people have pride in many things, just go to work tomorrow and tell the person working with you that their chevy, ford, toyota, dodge, or whatever their vehicle is is a piece of junk, see what happens. They will tell you they've never had problems with it, blah blah blah, sound familar? Folks, theirs nothing wrong with having pride in where your kids go to school, you can even do that without putting down other schools to make your decision seem better than your neighbors. In someone elses hooves...

Many of you call this a prank and that may be just what it is. However, if you woke up tomorrow morning with a dead animal on your front doorstep and window chalk on your front door, would you still be laughing? What if I called it a prank? Of course it's okay to laugh it off when it doesn't happen to you, but what if you are the person responsible for cleaning it up. Not so funny then, is it?CHS Student

Was this prank funny sure, could it have done without the slander and dead pig, yes. But what disgusts me the most, is all of this slander and hate. Do you people have any decency???? All of you people bashing co-workers, friends, etc. No one is perfect, and obviously not even me, but these comments have gone too far. I am friends with alot of scotus, chs, and lakeview students and famalies, and none of them deserve this kind of bashing. It takes alot to stand behind your username and bash people. If this is how you truly feel and stand behind it fully why don't you people use your actual name??? That is what i thought you are cowards, and even i am but once some people start showing their true colors this is all just a bunch of talk and no action. Congratulations to you all bashing scotus and congratulations to all you bashing CHS. I hope you all are able to sleep better at night now because of it.
Furthermore, i would like to call out the self proclaimed "Realist". Hey buddy, you need to get off your high horse and get back down to 'reality'. You are not better than anyone else, no matter what you think or type. I hope that you sleep better at night considering you were bashing on a high school student at scotus. WoW you are a real piece of work. I am ashamed of even being associated with you through CHS. I pity you, your family, and your parents for bringing you up like this with no respect for anyone, and hiding behind your usernames. If you are a real man, you would put your name behind it and stand behind it, but you are not you are a coward. Congrats buddy. I have seen your posts throughout the website, and nothing positive has come out or your mouth. Grow up buddy, get a life, and do something with your time besides bashing people.
With that off my chest, I ask, as the "realist" would say for those "holier than thou" to pray for you sir, because you are a disgrace to mankind.
p.s. Statistically scotus is a better school than CHS. They have a 99% graduation rate compared to CHS 88%. I have the facts as I just did a report on it so try me.
Sincerely,

First of all- Where were these kids driving around at that they found a deag hog on the side of the road??? That simply doesnt happen. As a LHS alumn and growing up here in Columbus- I have many friends that attended SCC and CHS. I know exactly what my SCC friends would say.... that they would expect some kind of prank from CHS- but not in this form. LHS and SCC have been rivals since way back when. SCC students would dress up in overalls and straw hats for our BB games- LHS would wear garbage bags (baggers). No property was damaged- no animals were used (let alone a dead one!) I dont see the harm in cross town rivals and pranks- but I think this one was over the edge! I also think we shouldn't be name calling or accusing. We have 3 great schools that all have their faults. The CHS students used poor judgement and now they will be punished. End of story!FARMER

What are the kids of Columbus thinking of? They look like amateurs! My Dad told me the bast prank that they ever pulled was put their neighbor's milk cow on the second floor of the First Ward School! However, you must realize that the cow caper took place in the 1920's and there was no media coverage or cross-town sports involved............just Halloween!BeenThereDoneThat

It appears that what most people seem to miss, is that vulgarities & a rotting pig carcass were left at the Scotus High School Activity doors late Saturday night/early Sunday morning. Sunday was the Scotus graduation where parents & students would have entered the school to attend the graduation ceremony. If it had not been found, cleaned up, & the stinking rotting carcass removed. It was bad enough that the carcass stained the cement in front of the doors. I'm sure it would have put a damper on the Graduation Activities. It appears to me that society is going down hill fast when grown adults ratonalize & make excuses for their children instead of making them take responsibility for their actions.

Have to chuckle at some of the admissions of pranks in the past. Remember our high school years and can match alot of them. However, our situation was different. The pranks didn't take top billing - what did was which male high school graduate got a call from the local draft board informing them that they needed to report for duty to be shipped out to the VietNam War directly out of high school. Please, everyone, count your blessings and picture those soccer players and our high school graduates having to do just that at the raw age of 18! Seriously, folks, this is nothing.Doc

Would have been 1000x more funny if the pig was left at the police department. This prank had no real point or attempted humor involved at all. Just leaves me saying "I don't get it".

I think this is very entertaining!!!! The prank should have never been done, but think about it, they have you all of you talking about it and all worked up over a prank......pranks happen in every town, and this is not even the worst prank i've ever heard. I can't beleive a prank has so many people worked up that all people do is sit and blog about it. Isn't there something else we can worry about?what about bob

As the old adage states, "to err is human, to forgive, divine." In your "perfect" little world, wouldn't it be best to forgive. We have all made mistakes that we have been forgiven for, haven't we? Think about it.SERIOUSLY

May 21, 2009 12:48 PM
If statistics show that Scotus has a better school than CHS with a 99% graduation rate compared to 88% at CHS, what do your statistics say about the percent of Scotus kids that end up graduating from CHS because they were in trouble for one reason or another and could not graduate from Scotus? Is this the 11% difference?Observer

To BenThereDoneThat: I doubt that anyone is making excuses for the actions. They are just finding a little humor in it, as from my observation, the kids from both schools are too.The kids will be punished long after it's all forgotten. I remember an incident in our school where a group of guys picked up a classmate's volkswagon and placed it in the school hallway. We recently went to the 40th class reunion and that particular guy did not attend. The report back was that he had no desire to return to his hometown and school because he was always picked-on. The culprits in the case felt alot of remorse 40 years later and admitted that it was a crummy thing to do. The comment I heard was "Yes, I'm not very proud of that".
In this case, it's over and the school authorities and the police did what they had to do. Am sure the parents are doing what they need to do. Somehow, the whole thing especially on this blog has taken on a complexion of which school and which kids are better etc.... The kids didn't do THAT. The Scotus supporters are yelling "hey, look what they did to us?" Sorry, that Scotus had to do a rush clean up job - but relax, it's over. The Columbus High School supporters are yelling but "ya, look what your kids are doing!" All that is ridiculous. I can think of a couple instances in the past when celebrations went bad. They weren't labeled as pranks but the kids were certainly out of their comfort zone and the parents apparently had no idea where the kids were and what they were doing. They learned after the tragedies happened. Surely, we haven't forgotten already. Hopefully, all parents will remember, they are in this together and have faith that people generally do the best they can.

Scotus IS the better school. They don't have kids who exhibit poor sportsmanship by desecrating the rival schools territory with dead animals because they couldn't handle losing to a better team. It's also been my experience with the Scotus kids that they are better employees. Respectful, considerate, prompt, hard working, and devoted to their jobs. I don't think it's the school that made them that way, it's the parents who took the time and made the effort to raise them to be ideal citizens. And these aren't a bunch of rich snobby kids. At one point I used to think that myself but soon discovered different. Some of these kids have parents who work their tails off at the factories to provide their child with a quality education. I can't honestly say I see that type of moral obligation being done to the CHS kids. It doesn't surprise me that others would mock and ridicule the parents for their love and devotion to their kids futures. They obviously have no concern for their own child's, why would they care about someone else's?ron

I can proudly say that I never graduated from any Columbus school. I have my kid in school in Columbus now and all of the B.S. written here makes me think of going back. What happen to your famous Columbus Power, pride and progress. You hear talk all over how Columbus wants to grow and needs to grow, this is the B.S. people coming has to put up with though. (i'm not talking about the prank,i'm talking about the posts). I once was told when I had my child that it takes an army to raise a single child. I think we all need to join together in our great community and help each other with these kids. For the people that are putting down the children, wow I can't believe that an adult would be so absent minded. A word to the wise: God made everyone different he did not however make anyone better then the one they look at. Get over yourselves, your words are harsh and filled with hatred and for what reason. When I am mad at someone, I usually tend to look at myself in the mirror and figure out why I am really mad. Perhaps some people on here should do some soul searching as well. Good luck to all of you and God Bless!!Steve

I just spent 30 minutes of my life reading this blog section. Not to sure I learned to much. I graduated from CHS several years ago. In the late 70's and early 80's there was alot of bashing of all 3 schools by all 3 schools. I know people who went to CHS and Scotus who bashed each other, bad mouthed the others and even fought each other over school pride. The thing is, they grew up. Some of these people sent their kids to the school they hated. Every one seems to have turned out fine. Personnally, I think the "prank" was stupid and without meaning. Do not judge the whole by the actions of a few.My own belief is that there will always be some kids who do these things. There will also be other actions in ALL schools that we find offensive. Each incident is its own, by the ones who commit the action. Do not lump everyone into a catagory due to this.
Scotus should always have a higher graduation rate, its a private school with a different student body. At the same time, thes kids are just as vulnerable to bad decisions as everyone. I take great pride in the fact that my kids have done well in the public school setting. They could have done well at a private school as well. I just chose not to sacrifice what was necessary to send them there. I tip my hat to those that have done so.
When these kids grow up, and they will, they may see this as a mistake in judgement. Hopefully they will help their kids not make this mistake.

To: PhreakwarsYour assessment of CHS/Scotus students, based upon three or four CHS students commiting a single prank, is as baseless as your assessment of which school makes a better Gambino Pizza employee. At least you rambled long enough to contradict your first statement by saying the school didn't make them the better employee.
Your generalizations stike me as odd, given your comments on generalizations made of the Hispanic community.
Props to "Growing Up" on an excellent commentary.
