Very soon everyone will need at least a debit card. Banks are saying it costs too much to process checks and businesses are getting tired of getting bad checks from Jack & Jill Sixpack.yepper

had one i didn't use in 5 or 6 months, so they cut my limit in half, and that in turn lowered my credit score by about 20 points!debit card user

Use debit card, check or cash. Businesses are refusing to take debit card under $15-$25. They say bank charges are too high and if you insist on using it - they charge additional fee.The real question is...

How about asking if you have ever abused a credit card and then expected to have the debt wiped out because you were not aware of everyhing, i.e. a victim???????? I am being facetious by the way meaning I do not have any sympathy for people who charge and charge but do not want to pay for it.Smarty Jones

Not a big fan of "plastic". Most are a huge rip off. Anything over 12% interest is a joke. Yes I do have 1 just for online purchases. I totally agree checks will not be around forever. Debit cards are the thing of the future. Also what ever happened to paying with cash ?Senseless

A more accurate question would be..."How have you abused your credit card"? :)Jack Sixpack

To: "debitcarduser"I think you are refering to businesses not accepting 'credit cards' for small transactions. 'Debit cards' only cost the business a few pennies. Well worth it for not having the hassle of paper transactions.

The Best Buy credit card is the WORST! I had a payment due May 14, I paid online May 12. ...They take 4 days to process online payments...so even though I paid 2 days early, they made it two days late. Yes, if I paid additional fees they could 'rush' my payment for an additional $15 or something. So the payment was 2 days late and I got a $29 late fee. Best Buy is a joke and rip off. I'll never buy anything from Best Buy again, just because of their stupid credit card policies. ...and the interest was outrageous!Brian

So I check my Best Buy credit card to make sure it's closed. ...THEY CHARGED ME A FINANCE CHARGE ON THE LATE FEE! I pay 2 days early online, they wait 4 days to take the payment, charge me a late fee, then IMMEDIATELY charge me a finance charge on the late fee of $5.81. So if I wouldn't have checked, then the balance of $5.81 would have carried over, late charge of $29, then interest of 25%....Insanity, I'm never ever buying anything from Best Busy again. Robbers!

But, then again, I don't charge that much and make my payments on time.I have no sympathy for idiots who go out and rack up a flat screen, playstation, clothes and other crap to the tune of $5k and then can't make their payments. I have even LESS sympathy now, seing as how the Obama Administration wants to ease penalties or make up the difference.
Bad enough I already have a mortgage, but don't own a home, have a Chevy Suburban car payment, but don't see it in my driveway...now I have to pay for someone's flat screen.
Ain't Russia great, comrade?

ooo yes, the famous credit card, cringe every time i even look at the damn thing. i've got one from citi, make online payments, had a good interest rate, but then made one late payment and the s. o. b.'s jacked me to 39% interest rate and a couple of finance charges a month...so much for emergency use only...it's gonna take the rest of my life just to pay off a couple hundred bucks...can't imagine how people rack up thousands on those suckers...rick

Credit cards are GREAT. I use it for everything and probably spend $3000 a month but then I write them a check for the balance every month. Never no finance charges and I build up points and they send me a check at the end of the year around $350 dollars.jennifer

Rick is right. If you can not pay your balance off every month you are stupid and the credit card companies just love you.snowflake

Yeah, just last month actually. I spaced my payment was due on the 10th (we went out of state for Easter) and then I paid on the 17th when I realized I missed it. My first late payment since we got it a year ago, and we always pay at least double the min. payment, and they took us from 8.99 fixed interest to 17.24 variable!!! I called and talked to them all they would do was put it on a 10.24 variable rate. I just don't understand why ONE late payment can ruin 12 months of on time payments that were double the minimum! Not to mention it why I missed it, but do the care? NO!debitcarduser

To paulcan - NO it wan't a credit card use - I wanted debit card use and the business refused to do it - even tho they had the machine to do the transaction. They would only take cash or check for under $25 purchase. Needless to say I won't shop at that Columbus business again.money bags

I know of a few businesses that charge extra for use of credit card purchases, i.e. gas purchases. I would like someone like paulcan, who has very good knowledge on this subject to comment if this is legal or not. I believe it's illegal...Magenta

It is my understanding that a business cannot charge more to use a credit card, but they can give a discount for cash. Bottom line = same thing. It is also within the rights of a business to accept or refuse cards as well as to set limits on card usage. For example, most car dealerships will not allow you to put a car on a credit card since it will cost the business hundreds of dollars in fees. Some businesses even set card minimums.

It must be legal, Madison County accepts credit cards to license your vehicle, but charges 2 or 3 percent to do so.april fain

I have pay pal buyer credit (owned by GM), I pay every month on the first of the month, and havn't really paid attention to the statemnt I just pay every month way more than the payment requires. (it's usually $30, i always pay $50 to $100)anyway it turns out that they have financed charged me for every month for the last year because for some reason If i pay them before the 5th of the month it doesn't count as a payment
they have literally given me 12 charges of up to $40 each
