PIERCE -- The Scotus Central Catholic girls track and field team won yet another meet.

But it was the biggest meet up to this point of the season. The Shamrocks won seven events in taking the Class B-4 District Meet with 124 points Thursday at Pierce High School.

Boone Central took third with 93 points, David City was seventh with 16 points, Lakeview finished eighth with 12 points and Schuyler came in ninth with 12 points.

The Scotus boys were second with 83 points, 71 points less than champion Norfolk Catholic. Boone Central was fifth with 48 1/2 points, while David City took seventh with 29 points. Schuyler came in 10th with 13, while Lakeview finished 11th with one point.

SCC girls coach Janet Tooley said the girls picked up right where they left off after winning the Centennial Conference meet Saturday at Pawnee Park’s Memorial Stadium and added it was a team effort.

“Our sprinters and jumpers have provided a lot of quality points this entire season and this district championship as well as conference championship were achieved because of those points, as well as other members getting some of those extra points we needed,” Tooley said. “We qualified some girls in events we knew that were going to be very close but we also missed out on a few.”

Once again, Amber Ewers and Sami Spenner paved the way for the Shamrocks. Ewers won four events, while Spenner took home three. Ewers cruised to wins in the 100-meter run (12.3 seconds), 200 (25.2) and 400 (57.7). Spenner took home victories in the long jump (17 feet, 6 3/4 inches) and triple jump (36-4). Both were members of the winning 400 relay team with Ashley Paprocki and Monica Boeding, who ran a 50.6. Spenner earned a state berth in the 200 after finishing second at 25.6.

Katelyn Kerkman won the high jump, clearing 5-1. She also earned a state berth in the long jump (third, 15-11).

Other qualifiers included Kelli Schumacher in the triple jump (third, 35-0 3/4), Becky Hall in the 800 (third, 2:32.9), Boeding in th 100 (fourth, 12.9) and Paprocki in the 400 (fourth, 1:02.5).

The Shamrock boys will take six kids to the state meet. Jordan Janda, hampered by a hamstring injury, won the 100-meter run at 10.7, while Callen Schwank took the 200 and 400 with times of 22.5 and 51.8, respectively. He also qualified in the 100, taking second at 10.8.

Tyler Suess won the discus with a throw of 165-11, while finishing third in the shot put at 50-8. Josh Ryba earned a spot in the discus after taking third at 143-5. The last qualifiers were Kirby Reardon in the triple jump at 43-2 1/2, and Pat McKay, who grabbed third at 2:06.0.

“I thought it was a great day for our program,” SCC boys coach Jeff Ohnoutka said. “Callen had a great day for us, going to state in three events. Jordan running a 10.7 in the finals after having a bad hamstring all season. Great day for him. I’m looking for Tyler to have a big week as I think he is one of the best discus people in the state.”

It was an up and down day for the Lakeview teams. The girls will take two down to the state meet. Macey Gronenthal earned a third-place finish in the discus with a 104-7 toss, while Sarah Leimser qualified in the shot put after throwing 35-1 1/2, good enough for a third-place finish.

“I’m excited for both girls,” Lakeview coach Chris Thoms said. “They both worked hard all year long and it’s a special thing for Macey and Sarah because they have never been to state.”

Unfortunately for the boys, the Vikings didn’t get as single kid qualified.

For the Boone Central girls Emily Wells was the lone individual winner for the Boone Central girls in taking the discus at 112-5. The 1,600 relay team of Breann Thorberg, Savannah Baker, Chancee Nolan and Bobbi Beckwith won its race with a 4:12.4.

Other qualifiers includ Baker in the long jump (second, 16-0 1/2), Beckwith in the 400 (second, 1:00.1) and 200 (third, 25.7), Paige Kolm in the pole vault (second, 8-4) and 1,600 relay (fourth, 5:52.4), Megan Bygland in the 300 hurdles (second, 48.7) and 100 hurdles (third, 15.9), and the 400 relay (second, 51.1).

Becky Buntgen qualified in two events to lead the David City girls. She took third in the 100 at 12.8 and fourth in the 200 at 26.7.

Katie Flynn is the lone Schuyler girl to qualify for the state meet. She won the shot put with a toss of 39-8 1/2.
