City/area digest Immunizations at Polk County OSCEOLA -- The Polk County Health Department will hold an immunization clinic from 3-5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, at the Health Department. A wide range of immunizations and boosters will be available, including those for pre-kindergarten. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian, and a record of all previous immunizations is required. A small administrative fee will be requested, however, services will not be denied to those with a true inability to pay. Girl Scouts selling cookies COLUMBUS -- The Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska cookie sale is under way, and is scheduled to run through Monday, Jan. 26. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is designed to help young women learn and practice life skills such as planning, decision-making and customer service. Proceeds from sales will remain in Nebraska with revenue being divided between the girls, troops and the council. Funds also are used to provide leadership and development programs to girls participating in Girl Scouts. Popular cookies will still be available along with a new choice for the health-conscious -- reduced fat Daisy Go Rounds in 100-calorie packages. The cookies are free of trans fats and are available by order through a neighborhood Girl Scout or the cookie hotline at (877) NEMINT4U. No senior center, transit Jan. 1 COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Senior Center and Columbus Area Transit will be closed Jan. 1 for New Year’s Day. Drunken driving enforcement set COLUMBUS -- The Platte County Sheriff’s Office and the Columbus Police Department are participating in a “You Drink & Drive. You Lose.” enforcement through Jan. 1. The Nebraska Office of Highway Safety provides grant funding for the enforcement activity which funds overtime worked by county law enforcement officers to focus on alcohol impaired drivers and related violations. The police department encourages the public to report any possible drunken drivers by calling 564-3201. Beginning archery classes Jan. 8 COLUMBUS -- Platte Valley Archers will hold a beginning archery class for youth beginning at 1 p.m. Jan. 8 at the Platte Valley Archers Range in the basement of Columbus City Hall. The class is open to all youth ages 7 through 17 years. The class will run 6-8 weeks, and will teach basic range safety, shooting form, and how to have fun with archery. Donations will be greatly appreciated; leave donation in bag and attach to front doorknob unless other arrangements have been made. Checks should be made payable to Troop 406. All trees collected will be used for wood chips by the City of Columbus. Sick wildlife reported in city COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Animal Control Department recently received several reports of sick wildlife in the city. Upon inspection of the animals, testing was conducted to determine the cause. Columbus Animal Control received confirmation that wildlife has tested positive for distemper. Pet owners are encouraged to contact their veterinarians to check on vaccinations for their pets. Routine vaccinations will guard against possible transfer to domestic animals. Literacy classes to resume Jan. 5 COLUMBUS -- Central Community College/Platte Valley Literacy Adult and Family Literacy classes are not meet from Dec. 20-Jan. 4. GED orientation and free GED preparation classes will resume Jan. 5 at the Columbus Public Library. English as a Second Language class orientation is scheduled for Jan. 7 at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. All English language classes are free and begin the week of Jan. 12. Call 564-5196 for more information. Recycling trailer now available COLUMBUS -- A recycling trailer is now available for the public at Cornhusker Public Power District, 23169 235th Ave. on Highway 81. Acceptable items include newspaper, magazines, plastic bottles and containers, and clean tin cans. The trailer is located on the north side of the building and is visible from the highway. Money for the new recycling trailer was received through a grant from the Nebraska Environmental Trust. Pottery class starting Jan. 7 COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Arts Council and Art Gallery is sponsoring a Pottery Class scheduled for 6:30-8:30 p.m. every Wednesday evening from Jan. 7 through Feb. 18. Classes will be held at the Columbus Middle School art room, and will be instructed by Ruth Schlobohm. Cost for attending this class is $85, and registration is limited. Breakfast planned at St. Anthony COLUMBUS -- A sausage and pancake breakfast is scheduled from 7:30-11 a.m. Jan. 11 at the St. Anthony Social Hall, 1719 Sixth St. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children ages 6-11 and free of charge for children 5 and under. Public is invited. Proceeds from the breakfast will go to benefit the Seminarian Fund. It is sponsored by the St. Anthony Knights of Columbus Council 9264. |
