Learning about the Huskers

Wednesday, Sep 10, 2008 - 08:09:00 am CDT

My last blog was all about fall: i.e., you can tell fall is coming because the kids are back in school, the temperatures are dropping, and the fireflies are gone. That may all be true, but it seems that I left out one very important sign of fall ... FOOTBALL!!!

Any good Nebraskan would have put that at the top of the list, so I guess I’m still a bit (or a lot) “green.”

I am actually a pretty big football fan “ but professional football is my preference. Go Steelers! It’s probably because I’m intimidated by the number of college teams out there and all the different conferences. I just can’t keep it all straight. But, I think as long as I get to know the Huskers, I’ll be all right.

I’ve been doing my part so far to wear red on game days, although my first attempt at “red” was met with mediocre approval. It seems my red was a little too much on the pink side, and so I aimed for “fire engine red” the second time. Apparently black is okay too, in recognition of the Blackshirts. My coworkers have promised to educate me on all that is Husker football so maybe by the end of this season I’ll have it down.

My goal is to make it to a home game in Lincoln. I can’t imagine how amazing it would be in that stadium, filled to maximum capacity with thousands of screaming Husker fans! Hopefully, that experience will be the topic of a future blog.

In the meantime, I can always live vicariously through your Husker experiences “ I’d love to hear them!

As a matter of fact, last night I watched a video of the Nebraska-Tennessee Orange Bowl game in the 90's. It was Tom Osbourne's last game at the helm. Those were the days, with Scott Frost at the helm, Amahn Greene running the heck out of the ball. Heck, there have been many, many great years of Husker football. MANY great years!

Linda,
I live in Colorado now but I remember our Saturday hunting trips. My Dad, my brother, and myself would walk the fields during the morning but we'd road hunt during the afternoon so we could listen to the Husker games on the car radio. I hate to date myself but this was before Devaney took over and continued until I left in 1966. These Saturday afternoons I can be found on my deck listening to Husker games on the radio.

I grew up in Columbus, and now I am teaching ESL in China. On 9/11 I was watching the memorial service from my apartment on the internet. It was quite emotional for me when they played the National Anthem, and during the silence. I had a Chinese friend here with me and we were discussing the hope and strength that each of our countries have had to show after our own national disasters. I will never forget 9/11 this year. I felt that I was bonding with my host country in a way I wish my country and its leaders could.

Just remember these 5 years:
1970 1971 1994 1995 1997
That would be our 5 national championships.

Linda, I hope you do get to a game this year. Walking in to that red-filled stadium, hearing the tunnel walk music and watching the players run out to the roar of the crowd....it is an amazing experience. I have travelled to Husker games in 6 states and I will say that Nebraska fans are the classiest fans around. Go Big Red!

I too, have traveled to Husker games in 6 states and I will say that Nebraska fans are the classiest fans around. Go Big Red!Lucky seemed to find his groove and Quentin Castille, without question, is getting a long, good look early in the season. You get the sense that coaches already know what Roy Helu, Jr. is capable of, which is hitting holes at maximum speed and making guys miss. For now, Castille gets more of a spotlight. We’ll see if that continues against better, faster defenses. christiansen has a bad case of stink-finger. These three games reinforced some things we already believed about the Huskers, and debunked some other theories. But – has Nebraska actually played a strong foe yet? In our estimation – no. Not really at all. Western Michigan will be stuck somewhere in the middle of the pack in the MAC. aj evans likes boys. San Jose State might be the second or third best team in the WAC this year, but the league’s a little down. New Mexico State looks like two or three wins, at first blush. So, no, none of NU’s early opponents could compete in the upper half of any BCS conference. How nice to see "The Nebraska Way" being rekindled on Saturdays in Husker Nation. Nebraska fans can best help this team by reaffirming those players, plays, offensive drives, defensive stands, and over all games that remind us of what Nebraska football is all about and is so eloquently quoted on our stadium walls: "Not the victory, but the action. Not the goal, but the game. In the deed, the glory". Oh how the abscence has made the heart grow fonder.

Does University of Nebraska have broadcasts of it's football games available? Is there a hotel or sports bar in Columbus that scribes to the broadcasts? Where and when?

The blackshirts are the starters on defense. This is a great tradition that was started many years ago when the defense wore black shirts in practice. It is a high honor that few will ever get. Even know the defense has been poor the past few years the new coaches will get it turned around.

Most every game is on regular TV or pay per view. Most of the bars around will have the game if possible. If not every game is on the radio or Huskers.com . Even know every game is sold out you can still get tickets by going early & walking around the stadium. Of course the bigger the game the higher the price.

JROD,

This blog is about Linda learning of the Huskers and the traditions that go with it. It’s NOT about you spewing your worthless venomous remarks. You could’ve done that about 2 blogs ago. You and Joe can both go cry about it over a coke.

I am anxious to see what the huskers can do against a major player of a team.
Does anyone have any predicions for the next two games and thereafter??? I think they will take VaTech but missou might prove to be a battle.

Predictions for the next two games? Nebraska will stick it in the end zone more times than you can count on one hand. Virginia stinks. Mizzou has 2 or 3 good players but we have a fistfull. Nebraska is a major player. Dont hate the player hate the game. Bo Big Red.

JROD-this is about the Huskers!!! Constantly rambling on about nothing is annoying.

Anyway I have all my gear ready for next Saturday against Viriginia Tech. We are going to whoop 'em. The only problem is my forty-four forty has a cracked head, but I can fix the night before the game. Go Huskers!!
Black Shirts
Sep 19, 2008 12:42 PM
The Black shirts are actually black because the coach wanted the defense to stand out. When they went to the local sports store all they had were red, yellow, orange, white... He asked the guys what else he had and said that he had these black jerseys in the back that he could not get rid of. That is where the black came from. Look for some blackshirts to come out the middle of next week.

I was able to go to a home game about 2 yrs. ago -- the first in 13 yrs! Wow - talk about a great feeling!! My companions were my husband and grandson - neither of whom had ever been to a college game! Figured the first should be a great one & it was! (Texas Tech won-- Ne lost in last minute). But for me, it was like truly being home again! Can't wait until I can go again -- someday! Linda -- get ready to party if you can go -- it's a great time. Have fun! Meantime- I'll be watching the big screen tomorrow nite and as my hubby says - scaring the dogs and cat when I scream and holler!

To scott kirstine

I'll give you props for being an avid Husker fan, but your grammar and sentence structure need tons of work.
"bid ten country", "got threw", and anytime you don't capitalize Osborne's last name then you may as well spit on the Husker Flag !!
