The prognosticator has had a great season. Several area teams were outstanding throughout the 2008 campaign.
The championship games are upon us so it is time to take a look at those matchups.
Thanks to all the readers, coaches and players that help make this such an enjoyable column to write. Here are the championship picks.
n Class D-2 -- St. Francis 36, Ewing 33: The Flyers win a tight game from the Tigers. A big win over Elgin in the semifinals gives St. Francis an edge over Ewing.
This should be one of the most entertaining championship contests as both teams will light up the scoreboard.
n Class D-1 -- Howells 40, Axtell 16: The Bobcats bring back the title trophy. A solid running game that wears teams down makes Howells the choice here. The Wildcats will have to play error-free football to win over a fundamentally-sound team from Howells.
n Class A -- Millard West 17, Millard South 15: The Wildcats turn away the Patriots for a second time. This should be a contest that comes down to the final moments.
n Class B -- Aurora 20, Beatrice 14: A defensive struggle goes to the Huskies. The Orangemen have been playing well, but the most physical offensive line in Nebraska high school football makes Aurora the pick here. A big win over McCook gives the Huskies a tremendous amount of momentum.
n Class C-1 -- Boys Town 27, Pierce 23: The Cowboys run past the Bluejays. Pierce has found a great rhythm of late, but the team speed advantage for Boys Town will make them hard to stop.
n Class C-2 -- Fremont Bergan 30, Blue Hill 21: The Knights pick up a state championship. The Bobcats are really solid defensively, but the spread attack of Bergan will create plenty of chances for big plays.
Until next year, I'll call ‘em as I see ‘em.
