NORMAN, Okla.— Halloween had nothing on this scary sight.
With national television cameras rolling, Nebraska looked a mess from the time the Sooner Schooner rolled onto the field Saturday night.
It looked like a schooner. But it felt like a Mack truck.
This was not something for kids to watch. Oklahoma had four touchdowns and Nebraska had three turnovers just 5½ minutes into the game.
“I was trying to tell them to relax, to keep going, to keep playing, let’s keep playing,” said Husker coach Bo Pelini, who kept his players from talking to the media after the game. “I’ve never been quite a part of one that started off that bad. It takes the wind out of your sails. It really does.”
It took more than three hours for fourth-ranked Oklahoma to finish off the 62-28 victory, but it took only about 20 real-time minutes of misery to know this would be a dreadful for Nebraska.
Even in your worst nightmare, you wouldn’t believe a game could start like this, the worst first quarter in Husker history. It was 35-0 by the end of the period, the most points given up by a Husker team in one quarter.
After 15 minutes, Oklahoma had 225 yards. Nebraska had 32. Joe Ganz’s first three passes all ended in turnovers. ESPN officials probably were wishing they were televising poker.
“The snowball started rolling on us and we didn’t do anything to get it stopped,” Pelini said. “We’re moving on.”
It was an odd Husker postgame scene. While Pelini talked, Sooner fans screamed in the background, watching the dramatic end of Texas Tech’s win against top-ranked Texas on televisions in the stadium concourse.
It was the first time in at least 30 years that Husker players weren’t made available to the media after a game. Why weren’t they?
“Because I’m the voice,” Pelini said. “I’m responsible for what happened out there. I’m the voice of this team. I told my guys Oklahoma is over. We’re moving on. I’m not talking about it. They’re not available. Is that enough said? It’s over. I’m the voice tonight.
“I was hired. I want our guys moving on to the next game. It’s a three-game season now. There’s nothing we can do about what happened at Oklahoma and I don’t want them talking about it. We’re moving on.”
The postgame discussion moved to the game, particularly those first 5½ minutes. It’ll be tough for players to watch it on film.
Oklahoma returned the opening kickoff 62 yards and scored a touchdown seven plays later.
That was just the beginning. The avalanche came next.
The Sooners scored another touchdown just four seconds later when Joe Ganz’s screen pass, intended for Todd Peterson, was intercepted by Dominique Franks at the 18-yard line. Franks breezed into the end zone.
Score: 14-0. Time off the clock: 2 minutes, 47 seconds.
Two plays later, Dreu Young fumbled at the Sooner 47. OU scored three plays later when wide receiver Quentin Chaney split Nebraska’s safety and cornerback for a 48-yard touchdown catch. Score 21-0. Time played: 4:29.
And two plays after that, Ganz sailed a pass high. The ball deflected off the hands of Marlon Lucky and into the hands of Oklahoma’s Lendy Holmes, who returned it 26 yards to the NU 9.
The Sooners scored one play later on a pass to Jermaine Gresham. Score: 28-0. Time played: 5:33.
Oklahoma scored again with four seconds left in the quarter on Chris Brown’s 1-yard reception after a 97-yard drive.
“I’m embarrassed,” Pelini said. “I’m just not used to this.”
The bizarre start made the rest of the game almost anticlimactic. Fans at Owen Field were keeping as close of tabs on Texas Tech-Texas as they were on the Sooners
Whatever success Nebraska eventually found on offense — running back Roy Helu provided flashes with 176 total yards — was quickly done better by an Oklahoma no-huddle offense that made NU’s defense look silly.
The Sooners already had 49 points by halftime — tying the most a Husker team has given up in a half. Nebraska gave up 49 in the second half of the Texas Tech game in 2004.
And OU already had 62 points by the end of the third quarter and Sam Bradford (19-of-27 for 311 yards, five touchdowns and an interception) was able to enjoy the final period as a spectator.
The loss drops the Huskers to 5-4 and 2-3 in the conference. The worst of the schedule is past, but Pelini knows his team has a “small margin for error” as it prepares for its stretch run against Kansas, Kansas State and Colorado.
“I feel strongly that this team will respond the right way. I really do,” Pelini said. “One thing I can say is we’re not a football team that points fingers at one another. We’re not a team that is divisive. It’s a group that, I think we’re going to hang together through thick and thin. We’re going to keep working. I told them, ‘The only way I know how to go about things in situations like this is roll up your sleeves and keep working.’ And that’s all we’re going to do.
“Obviously, that isn’t what we wanted. It hurts. But the reality of it is if you coach in this game long enough, if you play in this game long enough, you’re going to face situations like this.”

No Class
Nov 2, 2008 1:16 PM
Bo Bo needs to show class on the sideline. He looks foolish on the sidelines and what high school kid would want to play for this clown. He is making Nebraska the laughing stock of College Football. Grow Up Bo, your players are reflecting the class you show.Mark

What a joke! Could you imagine if Callahan would have said "I'm not talking about it"...the media would have crucified him.A clown
Nov 2, 2008 6:52 PM
This guy runs around the sideline yelling and screaming, and people think he has control? This team reflects his class less actions. Look at all the penalitys. This guy is embarassing to watch, Just because he screams and yells doesn't mean he can coach. His Bo Bo the clown act is getting old, fast.a load

Just face it its not the coaches its the players that suck if its the coaches maybe No Class can coach them a thing or two. Huskers are worthless!wow

35 points in the first quarter......ha, hahha
35 POINTS IN THE FIRST QUARTER!!!!
HAHAHAHHAHAhAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHA
Do you know why the first quarter looked like a varsity versus junior varsity game? BECAUSE THAT'S THE DIFFERENCE IN ATHLETIC TALENT AND ABILITY THAT SEPARATES, AND WILL CONTINUE TO SEPARATE, NU FROM OTHER TEAMS IN THE BIG 12 AS WELL AS COLLEGE FOOTBALL IN GENERAL!!! No decent division 1 athlete cares about Husker Football.
But, you know who I really feel sorry for? The traditional NU students who don't play sports. Those poor kids are going to suffer from lack of donation, money and recognition because the cash cow is now gone. Pathetic, really, given the fact that most drunk college freshmen collar-popping frat brosefs have more class than the football players and coaches (and that's saying something).
Nobody wins with this situation. But, when your football team and coaches are a bunch of classless, mediocre college football fill-ins, it's hard to expect anything else.
By the way, my initial prediction is coming ever so close to being true:
5-7 with no bowl game. May as well give the KU game up now, and I PROMISE YOU....if you think they are going to walk into Manhattan and just walk through KSU, you're even less connected to reality than Bo Bo Pelini.
Actually, you know what would be great?? That they lose the next 2 games and make the Colorado game completely worthless to both NU and CU. Now THAT would be a football game. Two mediocre, dirty football teams with one game and nothing to lose? It could give the UFC a run for it's money.
Da Da Da Da Da, GO....ah, whatever.

This is to WOW, do you want to get on here and take back your original predition, da da da da go 5-7 and no bowl, because we are sitting at 5 wins now with 3 more games. Lets hear it you big hotshot sports analyst. I guess getting on a public blog and bad mouthing people is real classy. So all you "classy" people keep it up you are doing a fine job. Get a clue.To GBR

yeah, I know we have three more games. I think 3 losses.OK, OK, OK, OK, MAYBE 6-6 with an appearence in the "Home Gallery Art.com BOWL" against Rice or something on December 5th.
Yeah, that'd be great.
Long live sports

All but one comment (GBR's) that I have read thus far must be from the same people that get all dressed in their Nebraska red, flags waving on their cars, and then go out to eat, or something and not watch the game. Any true fan understands it takes a few years to turn around any organized athletics program, install systems and values, learn playbooks, or players before a coach can truely be judged. That is why you see a change in power every few years from conference to conference. That is one of the things that makes sports so great, the original reality television. To all the fairweather fans, if your comments had any depth behind them instead of name calling, you would be taken more seriously, but now this message board would not be as fun to read. Would it?Husker Fan

I find it funny how you "fans" have a problem with Pelini's sideline antics when we are getting beat, but never had a problem with Charlie McBride acting the same way under TO when the Huskers were winning national championships. I would bet there wouldn't be much complaining if the Huskers would have won the OU game. You are such great supporters of the program when you say the players and coaches suck. As for the coaching staff having class, maybe you'd rather have Callahan back. He may have used throat slash jestures and called opposing team fans 'Hillbillies', but at least he never yelled at the players. Too bad all you 'class act supporters' didn't follow Callahan out the door. Nebraska doesn't need fans like you.
see this is where youre wrong on me

I have despised the Huskers and rooted for them to fail ever since attending and graduating from NU in 2000. Any team that has that much control over a city, state and the overall general sanity and wellbeing of the average husker fan is just destined for a fall. Rome fell, you know.It just makes it that much better for me....to see people who's very lives revolve around the 'Skers contending for a title getting smashed as the years progress. So I'm into Schadenfreude...sue me. You all have been a bunch of smug, self-righteous entitled sheep, unable to expand your interests beyond a friggin' football team. Most of you weren't out on O street to see how these guys acted, what they got away with, etc. It was worse when we were winning....Lawrence Phillips DRUG A GIRL DOWN THREE FLIGHTS OF STAIRS BY HER HAIR and what happened to him? Nothing! Makes me sick.
Again, 5-7 with no bowl.
Proud to Wear Scarlet
Nov 3, 2008 2:17 PM
Yeah, that was a painful game to watch. But if anyone listened to the commentaters, they said the Bo Pelini has what it takes to turn this program around. Did anyone seriously think NU would turn on a dime? If so, then you know nothing about football. Did NU get schallacked? Indeed they did! Did they give up and walk off the field? No! And they are looking better and better every week, even if all Bo has is Callahan's leftovers. I'm proud to wear scarlet. If others aren't, then switch teams and post on their blogs.Oh and one other thing
Nov 3, 2008 2:30 PM
Let's not forget that three of the 6 victories the Huskers would need to get into a bowl were against Western Michigan Diesel Tech, San Jose State College of Hair Design and New Mexico State Institute of Technology.....Iowa State hasn't won a game, and they BARELY (BARELY!) eked out a victory against Baylor.Beating a bunch of bottom rung Division 1 colleges and then the few teams in the Big 12 that are actually worse than they are does NOTHING for the credit of the Huskers.
NOTHING!

This sideline ranting and raving and now helmet grabbing has got to stop. This guy does not act like, look like, or coach like someone who is the head coach of the Cornhuskers. What a bad move it was to hire him and his brother. So much for all of the defensive knowledge they profess to have. It hasn't shown yet. I'm looking for the "Bo must go" website.wtb

Imagine that. All the haters talking trash on the Huskers when they are trying to rebuild the program. People who hate them because their team could never beat the Huskers in the past. Or is it that walking around O street and seeing the player's popularity made you jealous of them? I have been on O street and have seen how they act. Some are cocky and some are not. No different then any bowling league I've been on. It's called individual personality. So WHO is your team? I'm guessing it varys year to year depending on what ever bandwagon you jumped on. Or maybe it's who ever the Huskers are playing that week, cause your not really a football fan, but like the attention you get by bashing the Huskers since nobody gave you the time of day when you were on O street.
One last thing - Phillips hasn't worn the Nebraska jersey in over ten years. That was 3 head coaches ago. If your going to bash the current staff or players, at least use current examples of it. Back in the LP days, Pelini was coaching the 49ers and the players were in kindergarten.

Husker Fanyes im a husker hater for about 10 years now. the fans and whinny players ruined it for me.
"All the haters talking trash on the Huskers when they are trying to rebuild the program."
thats been the saying for the last 4 years. Bo has had these players since the first of this year. Their his players.
"So WHO is your team?"
i like lots of teams, and a lot of the teams i like suck. if nebraska ever get any good again, its not going to change my opinion.

No talent might get to 7 or 8 wins good job coaching staff and we will only get better on the right track. What they have done with the team is remarkable, if you watch college football not just Nebraska Football you would understand the job they are doing and the talent they have to get this far. Be lucky and happy to get to a bowl on his first year. If Callahan is here we would not have 5 wins right now. Half you that write your comments don't know anything about football or what it takes to become successfull. You are the type of people that are negitive when we lose positive when we win. Rememeber we have no depth because Callahan decide to recuirt junior college athletes instead of high school athletes, and that is not how you build depth. When Coach Pelini and his staff get their recruits in and get depth you will see a change in speed and are defense will look much better. And the anger will go down.
