Nebraska travels to Norman, Okla. Saturday night for a Big 12 Conference game against its traditional rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners.
The game is set for a 7 p.m. start and will be televised nationally by ESPN. Oklahoma is 7-1 on the year and is still in the hunt for a national championship. Bob Stoops, the Sooners coach, is a personal friend of Husker coach Bo Pelini, having both grown up together in Youngstown, Ohio. Pelini served as co-defensive coordinator at OU under Stoops when he left Nebraska after the 2003 season.
The Sooners are a dangerous football team on both sides of the ball.
The catalyst to the Sooner offense is quarterback Sam Bradford (6-foot-4, 218 pounds, Sophomore). He is an extremely accurate passer that works behind one of the best offensive lines in all of college football. On the season, Bradford is 183-for-270 (67.8 percent) with 29 touchdowns and only five interceptions. He averages 347 yards passing per game, but is not a threat as a runner, but his accuracy in picking apart defenses will certainly pose problems for Nebraska.
The running game for the Sooners is under appreciated. As a team, OU averages 178 yards rushing per game. The total offense puts up a staggering 542 yards per contest.
The leader in the running game is DeMarco Murray (6-1, 205, So.), who has the talent to score from anywhere on the field. He averages 78 yards per game and leads the team with nine rushing touchdowns. He also has 18 receptions good for two scores on the season.
Junior Chris Brown (5-11, 210) is the second part of the 1-2 punch for the Sooners on the ground. He averages 72 yards running per game. Oklahoma can keep a defense honest with the running attack, but has a lethal group of receivers.
Four different receivers have at least four touchdowns for the Sooners. The team leader is Juaquin Iglesias (6-0, 204, Sr.), who has 44 catches for 746 yards and five touchdowns. Manuel Johnson (6-0, 183, Sr.) has 33 receptions for 574 yards and a team-high eight touchdowns receiving.
Tight end Jermaine Gresham (6-6, 261, Jr.) is an imposing target in the OU passing game, with 29 grabs and seven touchdowns so far this season. Four receivers average at least 53 yards receiving per game for the Sooners. Ryan Broyles (5-11, 175, Fr.) rounds out this deep group for Oklahoma. The Nebraska secondary will be tested by the Oklahoma receivers the entire game.
The offensive line has tremendous size, depth and quickness. As a group, they have only allowed eight sacks on the season. Keeping Bradford safe in the pocket makes Oklahoma go on offense. Four seniors and a junior lead the way up front. Left tackle Phil Loadholt (6-8, 337, Sr.) dominates at the line of scrimmage. This group averages nearly 6-5 and 311 pounds per man from tackle to tackle. When they play well Oklahoma is as good as any offense in the country.
Defensively, the Sooners use a 4-3 look. and have good speed in all three levels of the defense. As a team, they only allow 105 yards rushing per game and 239 yards passing. In the wide-open Big 12 Conference, this defense is as good as Nebraska will see all season. Nose tackle Gerald McCoy (6-4, 295, So.) leads the team with six sacks. His physical play is a difference-maker for Oklahoma. Defensive end Auston English (6-3, 253, Jr.) is solid providing a pass rush off the edge. He has 4.5 sacks on the season.
Oklahoma has been hurt by the loss of linebacker Ryan Reynolds (6-1, 234, Jr.). His intensity is sorely missed by the OU defense. Linebackers Travis Lewis (6-2, 232, Fr.) and Keenan Clayton (6-2, 220, Jr.) lead the team in tackles. Lewis has a team-high 83 total tackles with three interceptions and Clayton follows with 51 including an impressive 36 solo stops.
The secondary gave up some yards in the win last week over Kansas State. The strength of the Oklahoma pass defense is at the safety spots. Senior strong safety Nic Harris (6-3, 230) has the physical presence to intimidate receivers coming across the middle. Free safety Lendy Holmes (6-1, 201, Sr.) also is tied for the team lead with three interceptions.
Oklahoma has speed in the return game. Ryan Broyles has a punt return for a touchdown, while Murray is always a threat returning kickoffs. The depth of quality speed here really gives Oklahoma an advantage over most teams. Punter Mike Knall (5-10, 190, Sr.) averages under 35 yards per punt in one of the few weaknesses for Oklahoma.
Kicker Jimmy Stevens (5-6, 156, Fr.) is only 3-for-5 on field goals this season. Nebraska will need to play an almost perfect game to stay with Oklahoma.
The Huskers have played well on the road, but this is a tough test indeed. The Sooners average 48 points per game and appear to have one of the strongest offenses in the country.
This is a powerful team that played poorly at times against Kansas State. Indications are they will play better at home. Look for the Huskers to drop a 41-20 decision against the Sooners.

Sounds like Pelini and the Huskers should go ahead and contact the Big 12 office and advise them that they will be forfieting this game.....Bull@%$&!!!! The Huskers as ateam and us as fans, need to have an attitude of "WE'RE AFRAID OF NO ONE". I think that once they are able to do that, they will have turned the corner towards seasons reminicent of the Osborne years. GO BIG RED!!!!!!!!!loyalTXHusker

Nice loyalty in the title there Jim. I knew Husker fans were cautious, but not contemptuously cynical. OU defense has bigger holes than ours, and we can pull this off with hard play and possession control - two blocks we have clearly built on. Fairweather fans need not apply.OK DOZE...

maybe you're not completely out of your mind. You just left out one part:"OU will defeat Nebraska soundly.......IN THE FIRST QUARTER AND A HALF."

Don't forgot, Nebraska is a handful of plays from being 7-1. I have no doubt you would not be so sure of Oklahoma's adavntage if the Huskers were 7-1. Nebraska is a lot better than people realize. Oklahoma has given up a lot of big plays and Joe Ganz is the kind of QB that can take advantage of that weakness.

Jim seriously these articles are ridiculous. How about next time you say what we have to do to win a game. It's people like you that keep me from reading negative articles.Husker Al

The game will be decided by how well Nebraska controls the ball and prevents big plays by Oklahoma. If Nebraska performs these well, then the game will be much closer than most are currently thinking and Nebraska could win. Nebraska probably should have beaten Texas last year - the two teams talent levels are not that radically different - and Texas has already beaten the Sooners this year, so it should be a good game.kush

OK Doze...you are part right. The Sooners "should" win easily. I know your objective is to look at these games some-what un-biased. But come one...you're probably still wearing that same old Husker jersey you have for years! Maybe you should just throw us fans/fanatics a bone, after all, you are all to well aware of "LIFE IN THE OLD BIG 8"! As for you who think Doze really isn't a Husker by heart...I dare you take take the time over a cup of coffee and sit with this guy as he will revel you with stories of the BIG RED that will make you smile and remember why it is that we are a HUSKER NATION. Jimmy, good job!Ridiculous

I predict it'll be closer than most people think. If the Sooners do happen to run away with it, they'll do it late in the game.Whatever

Here we go again. Always negative about our team. I think the last time you cut the team down, we lost in overtime. That should say something about your predictions. Why don't you write articles after we play instead of deciding before we do what is going to happen (or what your imagination has dreamt up for the week). KEEP TRYING!!!GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED! GO BIG RED!

Seriously this is getting crazy. Nebraska beats baylor and Iowa State and all of a sudden they are a good team. Again for the slow Husker fans they are not 7-1, Baylor could say they were a couple of plays away from winning if that is the case. Yes Oklahoma has problems on Defense but so did Mizzou and we only scored 17 against them. Face it the experts got the 21 point spread right on this game. Seriously as Husker fans you need to come together and get a clue about reality, the rest of College football is laughing at you. Wake up and realize Husker football is irrelavant even in the Big 12. You people wonder why fans treat you bad when you go to away games, it is because husker fans are arrogant and have shown their true class in being poor losers. You can keep talking about a championship that you won 11 years ago, but nobody cares.Sooner dead than Sooner Red

Are you kidding me, I could make this prediction going off the point spread. Oklahoma's defense is week in the secondary and the defensive coordinator is no Mike Stoops or Bo Pelini. I predict Tech lights up the scoreboard on Texas and Nebraska sqeeks out a victory 31-27.wtb

"MH - Don't forgot, Nebraska is a handful of plays from being 7-1"just 4 more numbers in the right spot, i would have won 50 million.
how many teams are a handful of plays from having a better record than what they have. no matter how you guys sugar coat all of this, nebraska still has 3 loses. there is no half wins or playing hard points.

Soon as Oklahoma loses the Sooner Schooner bandwagon will jump to Okie State and Tulsa.Phillip Tournor

I think we need to go into a shell offense and just run and take 30 seconds each play and pretty much play prevent defense and make them do long drives. I think 30-3 would be a okay score and then move on to next week vs KU. The season wont be defined until the last 3 games.Rick

Like the song says: I'm Sooner born and Sooner bred, and when I die I'll be Sooner dead! Nowhere does it mention Ok State or Tulsa. Sooner fans are Sooner fans, we don't change with the season or the seasons. SO go put on your creighton basketball gear...Sooner dead than Sooner Red

My prediction was close. Face it Sooner dead, the party was over ten years ago. Husker football is irrelavant, and have fun at the toilet bowl. Oklahoma could have easily scored 80 but Stoops felt sorry for Bo Bo the clown. Your Coach brings comedy to everyone with his 2 year old tempers on the sideline. I know, I know they should be 8-1 and if it wasn't for the refs Nebraska would have won. Have fun going to the toilet bowl. Go ahead and tell me how bad the Nubs will beat Kansas. Man the Order sure has been restored. Poor Guy there is always volleyball.(HA)
