DUNCAN -- A 22-year-old Columbus woman was returning to work Tuesday afternoon from getting lunch in Duncan when she lost control of her vehicle and rolled several times in a ditch on the northern edge of the community.

Maria Medrano was killed in the 1:24 p.m. one-vehicle crash from injuries suffered when she was ejected from the Mercury Cougar she was driving, according to information released by the Platte County Sheriff’s Department.

Medrano was transported by rescue personnel following the 1:24 p.m. crash to Columbus Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Sheriff’s Deputy Shane Prather said Medrano was alone in her vehicle, which struck a utility pole before coming to rest on its side. Seat belts were not in use, he said.

Prather, who investigated the accident along with Deputy Chris Johnson, said it appeared weather conditions were a factor in the one-vehicle accident on 160th Street.

It had been raining earlier in the day and there was a drizzling rain falling at the time of the accident. The paved road skirts the northern boundary of the community and has a speed limit of 50 miles per hour.

“It appeared she might have hydroplaned and lost control,’’ said Prather, noting there were no eyewitnesses to the accident. The accident was reported by a person who heard it and call authorities, the deputy said.

Medrano worked at CSS Farms Inc., which grows and stores potatoes for Frito-Lay potato chip company, near Duncan. She was the company’s lab quality control technician.

“She just ran to Duncan for lunch ... it’s a two-mile drive,’’ CSS Farm Manager Tony Blickenstaff said this morning. Medrano had worked for the company for more than a year.

“With all the hours we work around here during harvest time, we all get pretty close,’’ said Blickenstaff, who spent the hours after the accident consoling Medrano’s boyfriend. “It’s been pretty rough.”

Blickenstaff said the accident reminded everyone at the company of the fragility of life.

Funeral services are pending with Gass Haney Funeral Home in Columbus.

Seat Belts Do Save Lives

Although it may be painful for some readers to see the wrecked vehicle I'm glad the Telegram posted it. Common sense seems to dictate that seatbelt use in this case would have been a lifesaver in this case due to the appearance of the vehicle. Hats off to the rescue personnel for doing a tough job.

Three of us survived an accident on black ice in the mountains. At 65 miles per hour driver lost control on the ice the car flipped on to the top and rolled and came back up on the wheels. One person knocked out with a head wound and many black and blue spots but other wise no harm done with out the seat belts somebody would have died if not all of us.
Also one should not drive fast on wet roads the weather soon will be a problem for travel. Please be careful.

It's so sad to see this happen to such a young person. Unfortunately, accidents happen. The rescue squads always do such a good job in responding to these incidences. They have a tough job. My condolences to the family, and GOD BLESS.

First off, I'd like to express my sincere wishes to the family of the woman who lost her life in this accident. Second, I'd also like to express how important it is to wear seat belts. We have had too many local deaths in traffic accidents of our young and of parents of our young for no reason but lack of safety belt use. Last I'd like to express my reluctand dismay at the Columbus Telegram for having the disrespect for the loss of a life and playing the upbeat type of music you edited into the video of the accident, was this music really necessary, did you think at all, and was any music necessary. It's a tragedy, not a Columbus Days celebration, for Pete's sake. Use some common sense.

I feel that the video clips of tragic accidents are extremely distasteful on the Telegram part...you should be ashamed! My prayers go out to the family and friends of this young woman. God Bless and be with you in this hard time.

I just wanted to express my sympathy to the family. Also I would like to thank the telegram for posting pictures and video...... people need to see what can happen in adverse weather and why it is so important to wear your seatbelt. To Saddened: news is news, you see worse things on television shows. You should be ashamed for your comment.... it is the telegrams job to inform through writing and if possible pictures and video!!!!

Seeing that picture on the front page was awful. Have any of you lost a loved one to an accident? Well unfortunately this family has lost 2 teenagers in the past few years. When our son was killed, seeing the vehicle was the absolute last thing I wanted to have in my wonderful memories of him. It's too awful of a scene to show on the front page. If people "need" to see this kind of stuff, perhaps the paper could open up a site for the people in this world that have to see to believe. Seatbelts do save lives, we all have that burned deep into our brains. Unfortunatly some choose not to use them.

I am so sorry for the loss of your son but if a person does not want to see these pictures..... simply don't look. I don't think it is a "have to see it to believe it" situation. I think it is a "look what can happen if you don't wear your seatbelt" situation. I know it sucks but sometimes the shock factor is needed to drive a point home. Plus the constitution backs this up.... and as sad of a story as this and many more are....... people need to SEE what can happen. Again, my deepest sympathies to the family.

i'm happy that the telegram does report these stories and post pictures and have them in the paper, after all, that is what business they are in.. reporting news.. if there was a television station around here, they would have had video of the accident on the 5,6, and 10pm news.. what is the difference of that? tell me?

the people who don't like the pictures are probably the same ones that said the didn't like the news showing the twin towers being hit by hijacked airplanes and falling down.. this is reality people.. people dont need to forget about tragedies.. remember and learn from

I don't see any problem with the pictures posted at all...maybe it will help people realize that life is too short and to keep taking safety precautions. Just as long as the Telegram doesn't post pictures of body parts or anything after an accident, I think it should be okay. I have seen accident pictures in the newspaper, and not just the Telegram, for as long as I can remember.
