COLUMBUS -- Central Nebraska Community Services held an open house Wednesday to exhibit its new partnership with Columbus Public Schools (CPS) and how the relationship has enabled the expansion of the local Head Start program.

Central Nebraska Community Services, 3286 53rd Ave., is a private, non-profit agency that administers the local Head Start, an early childhood education program.

The alliance has allowed the Head Start program to expand from 100 to 140 students, with no cost to participating families.

Tammy Classen, area manager for Central Nebraska Community Services, said although the Head Start grant is income based, the grant provided by CPS is not as restrictive, which allows families who may be over qualified to send their kids to the pre-school program.

The CPS grant makes funds available for families “just over the income level, but not able to pay for private pre-school,” Classen said.

With the additional students and expansion of the program, more space was required for staffing needs so earlier this year Central Nebraska Community Services purchased the building to the north, formerly the Cartoon Care Child Care and Preschool.

The building will serve as a training center for the agency and provides the additional needed office space, she said.

Classen said the agency would like to see every child have the opportunity to attend pre-school due to the social and educational benefits attributed to such attendance.

“Our ultimate goal is to serve all kids and send all kids to pre-school,” she said, but limited funding restricts the number of participants, which is why the CPS partnership is important.

“We want to serve kids who don’t have pre-school opportunities. We want to meet those needs,” she said, and “we are hoping (the program) will expand each year.”

CNCS. has several services besides Preschool in the Columbus community. The community has a great investment in this area. CNCS has several programs they have a FREE budgeting program to help people learn to budget I could have really used that when I was just out of school. They have a Thrives program that helps families obtain housing when they are homeless or on the edge of becoming homeless. I really could have used this when I left my ex instead of moving in with my parents! That program is free also.
There is emergency relief it helps families who need a little help when they can’t pay an electric or heating bill or maybe can’t pay a deposit. I know there are a lot of people who are thankful for that program with the gas prices being as high as they have been in the winter. Several people in the community use the Immunization clinic to get their children’s immunizations. I am sure thankful for that program because all they ask for is a small donation I don’t have to go broke getting immunization for my kids. They have a car seat clinic. The car seat clinic have saved a lot of kid’s lives by getting kids in car seats and teaching parents how to use the car seat properly. They also have an early head start home base program. This program serves Parents of children prenatal to three. That is before birth. A teacher comes into your home and teaches the parents how to teach their child by playing. They address parenting issues a parent might have such as behavior, teething, bedtime, potty training, and any thing else a parent might have. The program teach basic nutrition and how to keep your child healthy they have a nurse that comes out to your home to help you with your Childs health and nutritional questions they help the family reach goals and get them help in the community when they needed. They provide group activities for the parent and child to interact with other children their own age. The early head start home base program has helped me grow into a great parent. I am thankful for all of CNC’s programs and all of their programs. If you have any experience with any of the CNCS programs I encourage you to blog and let the staff know how important they are in the community. Thank you
