Workshop for ACT test Thursday

COLUMBUS -- A workshop for high school students who want to prepare for the ACT will be offered from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, in the West Education Center at Central Community College-Columbus.

The workshop, taught by Dick Lindquist and Mark Stegman, will focus on math, active reading, English and science, and will share specific techniques and tricks for scoring high on the ACT.

Preregistration is required at least one week in advance. Cost for the workshop is $36, which includes handouts and a sack dinner.

Osceola fundraiser at Wendy’s Thursday

COLUMBUS -- Osceola High School students will be having a fundraiser from 5-8 p.m. Thursday, at Wendy’s in Columbus to help them pay for their Close Up 2009 trip to Washington, D.C. in March.

Twenty-two juniors and seniors will be traveling to our nation’s capital to learn more about how our government works. Close Up is a non-profit organization started in 1971 to educate and inspire young people to participate in our democracy.

Students will have the opportunity to tour monuments, meet with elected officials, and learn about government with students from across the country.

St. Anthony’s fundraiser at Amigos

COLUMBUS -- The St. Anthony’s Home and School Association is sponsoring a fundraiser night at Amigos, 3111 23rd St., from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.

Amigos will donate 15 percent of the sales during that time frame to the association to use for school improvements and to benefit the students.

‘Haunted House’ at CCC-C Oct. 28-29

COLUMBUS -- Central Community College-Columbus is hosting its annual “Haunted Forest” from 7:30-10 p.m. Oct. 28-29.

The public is invited to attend this event, sponsored by the CCC-Columbus student senate. Cost is $7 per person or $6 for those who bring a can of food, which will be donated to the Columbus food pantry.

Cost for CCC students is $3 when they show their college identification.

Maurices collecting clothes for Mission

COLUMBUS -- Maurices, located at 104 E. 24th St., will be collecting new and gently used clothing for the Columbus Rescue Mission from Oct. 23-26.

In return, customers will receive a coupon for 20 percent off store merchandise. The donations will be used locally.

Winter items are a special request with cold temperatures approaching, but any clothing donations will be accepted.

Maurices is open from 10 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday-Friday; 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
