CHS meeting for parents of seniors
COLUMBUS -- Columbus High School Guidance Counselors will have an informational meeting for parents of seniors at 7 tonight in the cafeteria.
The focus of the meeting will be on the college admissions process, scholarships and financial aid.
Vote for ‘One Book’ before Wednesday
COLUMBUS -- Voting is currently under way for the 2009 “One Book, One Columbus” program.
The Friends of the Columbus Public Library has announced that the five finalists are “America” by Chuck Hagel; “Enrique’s Journey” by Sonia Nazario; “The Prize Winner of Defiance, Ohio” by Terry Ryan; “The Street of a Thousand Blossoms” by Gail Tsukiyama; and “The Floor of the Sky” by Pamela Carter Joern.
Ballots are available at the library, Kelly Jewelry, Tooley’s, Rose of Sharon, and the new Chapters Book Store (upstairs at the Cottage). Votes also may be e-mailed to cplfriends@neb.rr.com before Wednesday, and voting will be available online at the Telegram Web site, www

St. Anthony’s fundraiser at Amigos
COLUMBUS -- The St. Anthony’s Home and School Association is sponsoring a fundraiser night at Amigos, 3111 23rd St., from 5-8 p.m. Thursday.
Amigos will donate 15 percent of the sales during that time frame to the association to use for school improvements and to benefit the students.
Cross County tailgate party Friday
STROMSBURG -- Cross County Community Schools will be holding a tailgate party to celebrate homecoming at 7 p.m. Friday at the Buckley Park brick pavilion.
Hamburgers, hotdogs, chips, dessert bars and drinks will be served.
‘Community Builders’ meeting
PETERSBURG -- A “Community Builders” event is planned Oct. 23 in Petersburg, beginning with a tour at 5 p.m. of Rae Valley Heritage, followed by a stop at 5:20 p.m. at Scott’s Backhoe and Well.
At 5:50 p.m., the group will stop at Rae Valley Market on Main Street. A program will be presented following the tour during which Nebraska Community Foundation President/CEO Jeff Yost will discuss how communities can keep the wealth of older generations in their town.
Residents also will share information about their upcoming Punkin’ Chunkin’ event. A roast beef dinner will be served at the American Legion Club, 105 N. 2nd St. at a cost of $8.
Reservations must be made by Wednesday by calling (800) 955-2773. Community Builders helps residents in Boone, Colfax, Nance and Platte counties learn ways to improve their communities.
Sponsors include Cornhusker Public Power District, Loup Power District and Central Community College.
ACT workshop offered Thursday
COLUMBUS -- A workshop for high school students who want to prepare for the ACT will be offered from 5-9 p.m. Thursday, in the West Education Center at Central Community College-Columbus.
The workshop, taught by Dick Lindquist and Mark Stegman, will focus on math, active reading, English and science, and will share specific techniques and tricks for scoring high on the ACT.
Preregistration is required at least one week in advance. Cost for the workshop is $36, which includes handouts and a sack dinner.
