COLUMBUS -- Both the Columbus High and Lakeview football teams were looking to turn their seasons around with a win to begin district competition Friday.

The Discoverers held on for the 20-14 win over the Vikings at Pawnee Park’s Memorial Stadium, but Lakeview is far from calling it a season.

Lakeview battled back from a 20-0 deficit, scoring two touchdowns in the second half, and had a chance to win the game in the final minute of regulation. Lakeview’s final drive ended without a score thanks to a stingy red-zone defensive stand by CHS.

That stop, along with another goal-line stand early in the second quarter by the Columbus defense, proved to be the difference in a game that was up for grabs nearly the entire second half.

The goal-line stand earlier in the game thwarted a 19-play drive by Lakeview preventing a 7-all tie and foreshadowed the even more crucial stop later in the game that prevented a Vikings victory.

“Our defense has had some issues the past couple of weeks,” said Williams, whose team improves to 3-4. “And nothing helps confidence more than stopping the other team on the goal line and holding them when they have a chance to tie the game.”

After Telegram Super Senior Michael Ziola connected with Tyler Vrba for a 53-yard touchdown pass to open the game’s scoring, Lakeview (1-6) began its marathon drive on its own 35-yard line.

The Vikings rattled off 16 consecutive running plays to get to the Discoverers’ 1-yard line.

With second-and-goal at the 1-yard line, Braulio Castillo was stuffed for no gain attempting to run between the tackles. Sophomore quarterback Cale Went called his own number, but again was held for no gain making it fourth-and-goal.

Vikings’ head coach Kurt Frenzen called a timeout to regroup, but Castillo’s sweep to the left was telegraphed by Columbus defensive end Grant Otten, who stopped the junior running back for a 4-yard loss.

Columbus was forced to punt on the next series, but CHS held Lakeview to a three-and-out to get the ball back.

The Discoverers marched down the field on a 13-play drive, capped by a 1-yard touchdown run by senior Garrett Birchem when CHS faced fourth-and-goal with one second remaining in the first half.

Lakeview opened the second half with another three-and-out, and then watched Columbus execute three consecutive direct snaps to Dillion Loschen, who totaled 21 yards rushing on the plays. Ziola then connected with Otten for a 27-yard touchdown pass, but the point-after attempt failed due to a missed snap.

At that point, Columbus had all the momentum and appeared to be on its way to a relatively stress-free win.

But a flurry of penalties, a turnover and a no-quit Lakeview team changed that.

The Vikings got on the board in the third quarter when Went rushed for a 5-yard touchdown.

Penalties kept Columbus from building any substantial drives for most of the second half. CHS was whistled for 12 penalties for 115 yards during the game.

If the penalties weren’t enough, Ziola threw an interception snared by Witt Rodehorst.

Lakeview made the turnover sting by scoring a second touchdown on 3-yard run by Castillo early in the fourth quarter.

With the walls caving in on it, Columbus managed to mount a drive that ended with a missed 30-yard field goal by Ziola, giving the Vikings 2:58 to win the game.

Went completed four passes and led Lakeview into the red zone, but a incomplete pass on fourth down ended the comeback that impressed Frenzen.

“We did a great job of fighting back after being down three scores,” Frenzen said. “We were in great position to win the game, but we just couldn’t capitalize.

“As long as our kids come out with the attitude they showed tonight, I like our chances the next two games.”

Lakeview’s comeback didn’t go past Williams’ radar either.

“I can’t say enough about coach Frenzen and Lakeview,” Williams said. “They could have packed it in after being down 20-0, but we didn’t expect them to do that.”

Lakeview hosts York and Columbus travels to Seward Friday. Both games are scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lakeview (1-6) 0 0 7 7 -- 14

Columbus (3-4) 7 7 6 0 -- 20

n SCORING SUMMARY: CHS -- Tyler Vrba 53-yard pass from Michael Ziola (Ziola kick); CHS -- Garrett Birchem 1-yard run (Ziola kick); CHS -- Grant Otten 27-yard pass from Ziola (point after attempt failed); LV -- Cale Went 5-yard run (Andrew Urkoski kick); LV -- Braulio Castillo 2-yard run (Urkoski kick good).

You know, many people think that it was and is just a game and all reality it is. But, if you look more closely, there is a HUGE respect between CHS and LHS. This is actually a very healthy rivalry. We as parents need to undrstand that. I was at the game and it was awesome. I do truely wish more Columbu Lakeview fans were that because it woul of been awesome. Lakeview is a quality oppenent and we were lucky to win. Give LSH the credit and it wil be fun.

This just shows you how bad Columbus Football is. We were extremely lucky to win. If this game would of happened last the last few years, I don't think it would of been a game.

Just when the posts were cordial, one slips in to talk a little smack. What gives? There were a lot of good kids on both sides of the ball, and they really don't deserve the negative comment. These kids show up every Friday ready to grind it up just because they like football. They may not have a perfect records, but they've definately earned more respect than that.

I hope Lakeview finishes their regular season with W's.

This game could of easily went either way. It was an awesome game and it is too bad someone had to lose. However I disagree with CHS Alum comment about not being a game had they played the past 3 or 4 years. Lakeview has made the playoffs the last four years and done well for the most part. Just because you were Class A at that time does mean that you would have been the better team if they played.

True, I see your point real chs fan, but for instance last year CHS beat Lincoln Southwest when they had Steinkuhler. And they just totally dominated them. Would we do that now? No way. The year before they almost beat Kearney at Kearney? Would they have a chance of doing that now? Haha no. So yes the kids fought hard Friday for the most part, and yes it was good they won, but your blind if you can't see the difference between this year's team and teams of the past few seasons. And no there isn't any guarantee that CHS would of beat LV the last few years, but if this year's team could do it, then I think our chances would of been better the last few years as well. Doesn't matter though, we won't ever know. CHS 1 Lakeview 0. Could be the other way next year because CHS will probably get worse.

they didnt do anything in the playoffs..its a lot easier to have success in C-1..obviously thats true, look at lakeviews solid 1-6 record this year in B..i'd say columbus would of blown out lakeview the last 3 years
3 team rivalry

I don't live in Columbus anymore, but I do occasionally follow the sports teams. So Columbus High is starting a rivalry with Lakeview and Scotus-LV is already a big rivalry. Does Scotus play CHS this year? That sounds like fun for everybody! Oh and I'm sure glad to see the rocks back on top of LV again!

Excuse me cause I don’t mean to be rude, but why is Columbus High struggling to be competitive in all sports? Is it in the coaching? Is it in the athletes? Is it in the parents not being supportive? All of the above? None of the above? I don’t understand it. CHS seems to have all the components to be good, but they can’t produce on a consistent basis. Somebody in the CHS crowd please explain it to me. No, I’m not a sma$%!@&. I love CHS sports as my daughter goes to CMS and will go to CHS. Thanks

It just seems like the athletes don't work as hard as they used to, plus they seem to be getting smaller every year.

Dear Columbus Telegram;

Do you have monkeys review the posts and click OK for bananas or does someone actually read them? I am not asking for censorship, just a few scruples? These comments are about decent kids participating in school sponsored sports.

…..or maybe, the students really are shrinking! Must be all the breaks the coaches make them take. Why, just the other day one of ‘em just shriveled right up and disappeared.

To Excuse Me….
I have 3 kids that are or have been involved in sports at CHS. Overall, the experience has been positive. Being competitive and/or producing does not automatically translate to winning and/or going undefeated. We’ve been ‘competitive’ in most sports. The athletes work hard, and, at the end of each season can look back and be proud of their accomplishments. Coaching has been solid. Sure, there are decisions I disagree with sometimes, but I’m not the coach. Parents are generally supportive. Fellow students attend games and are encouraging. Some sports, CHS co-op’s with Scotus and/or Lakeview. Feedback I’ve heard, the co-op’s are a good experience for all involved. We are lucky to have great schools in the area. Look forward to your daughter’s years at CHS.

So Real CHS Fan, what your saying is that I am not entitled to my opinion just because I disagree with you? So what if it's negative, this is America. It is called Freedom of Speech. You should look up the definition. Your real mature by calling the Telegram monkeys. Grow up and act your age being you are probably a parent. Quit defending your kid and the team just because they play. Any logical fan can see the obvious difference between this year and the past. I am done arguing with you because you fail to look past your diehard fan status and face reality. I am a big fan too, but at least I am smart enough to realize what is good and what is bad. I have made my point clear. I am right, you are wrong, end of discussion.
Its a game

I still find it amazing that people can get all worked up, angry and rude over a GAME!
Our son played FB for CHS and it is fun to win and tough to lose. I get excited about it, but I am also mature enough to realize that these are kids playing a GAME...not curing cancer or fighting for freedom...but playing a GAME. Keep it in perspective!

Do you people realize that Lakeview has a very young and inexperienced team this year. They played 5 sophomores on Friday. This year they had a total of 2 returning starters on both sides of the ball. They lost several all-state performers from last year. I think that is proof of how good Coach Frenzen and his staff are to be able to replace all that and still almost beat a team that was in Class A a year ago. The future looks bright for the Vikings as they only have 5 Seniors this year.

I think it is so cool that they finally got to play against each other, just one question--when did they become the same class? And I totally agree with It's a Game---it is just a game!! Imagine if you were the one playing, and you heard all the negative stuff people said about your team's ability!! I think it is just rude to say things like that about a high school team. Give them credit at least for the things they did right.

OK CHS Alum, I'll concede, we are all entitled to our own opinions. One simple clarification... I did not call the telegram monkeys, it was a figure of speech insinuating that they do not filter for context, only content.

Great game, great article.

I still hope Lakeview finishes their regular season with W's.

I teach at Lakeview and have a son at CHS (yes, he plays football)!! What a game!! Proud of all the young men who played that night! Best game I've seen in a long time. Sad to see anyone lose. Special wow to Lakeview's Sophomore quarterback Cale Went. Played like he had more experience than that (imagine his skills in two more years). Look forward to the game next year! Great job players and coaches!!

When I re-read the post I noticed it said I should quit defending my kid. That’s not going to happen. I am also not going to knock last years CHS team either because they have every right to be proud of their accomplishments. I also think that every year can leave a good impression on the following years. So, I felt compelled to set the record straight with some facts. This years CHS team average weight is 6 pounds per man greater than last years team. Good job guys, dedication and hard work in the weight room pays off. Last years team record was 5-4, just like Lincoln Southwest, with both teams losing to all four very tough division 1 teams they played. Here's a little bit of opinion: Lincoln Southwest did have Stienkuler, and he was a highly rated recruit. But, we all know it takes more than one player to make a team, and their record does not support some suggestions of domination of an awesome team. There may be opinions that this year’s team is worse than last years, but it is just opinion, and there is no real way to compare it, nor is there any compelling factual evidence to substantiate those claims. Yes, this year’s team lost to four division 1 teams too, but one was quite close. I think this years team is good, and a close game to Lakeview doesn't make them bad. If you use that analogy, then Lincoln Pius must not be good either. Either way, CHS has a realaistic shot of sweeping their district and doing well in playoffs.

Another fact, there are 11 more varsity players listed on CHS's roster this year compared to last years. My opinion is that last year’s team should be proud that they may have influenced greater participation. Furthermore, CHS should be proud of this year’s depth at every position.

Here is a little fun-loving ribbing: The classifications were made last year, not this spring.

Here is a little bit of fact for Lakeview too: Your QB passed with 43% completion for an average of 14 yards which is just behind Ziola during this game with 48% completion for an average of 16 yards. Sounds like you may have a force to be reckoned with the next couple of years.

I am sure someone could argue that I have too much time on my hands to make a post like this. Considering my conviction that it is not appropriate to take cheap shots at the kids involved, I am not too concerned. I would much rather have the trash talk directed at me than the kids from either team (that includes the family I have on both sides).

By the way, I thought the video clip was a very cool idea and I really enjoyed watching it (several times). There is a pulldown menu in the lower right of my screen that allows me to zoom the picture to 400% and the video is full screen and still quite clear (sorry I am not a computer expert, so I am not sure how too explain it better). Hopefully they will sneak in a few more of those videos for other sports and area schools.

Great game. A little too close for me, but a great game.
