Palin attracts 1,000s to Omaha rally

OMAHA -- A surprise visit by vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin to Omaha’s Civic Auditorium Sunday had many in the state wondering if it’s a sign the GOP ticket is worried about losing the district and its electoral vote.

Palin told a crowd of 2,500 -- and an overflow crowd of 3,500 more -- it wasn’t so.

“I’m going to Nebraska because I want to go to Nebraska,” Palin said. “I asked to come to the heartland of America.”

But her visit to Omaha is clearly a defensive move, and the latest in a series of unlikely events in a Republican-heavy state that rarely sees candidates visit this late in the campaign.

Since 1964, all five of the state’s electoral votes have gone to the Republican presidential candidate.

But Nebraska is unusual: It’s one of just two states that can split its electoral votes.

And Democrat Barack Obama has opened two Omaha offices to compete for the electoral vote tied to the state’s 2nd District. Republican nominee John McCain has so far relied on a volunteer effort in the state.

But McCain visited Ashland July for a fundraiser, and now his running mate has come to town. Obama hasn’t been back since a February visit before Democratic caucuses, but Nebraska U.S. Sen. Ben Nelson hinted Sunday of a possible “October surprise.”

Yvette Cordell, 41, of Omaha, said even though she plans to vote for Republican John McCain, she’s not sorry Obama decided to campaign in the 2nd District because “we like the attention.”

“Palin wouldn’t be here if there wasn’t that threat,” said Cordell, an independent.

The one electoral vote tied to the state’s 2nd District -- which includes Omaha, the biggest city in the state -- would be essential to victory if the election ended in a 269-269 electoral tie, neither candidate reaching the needed 270 electoral votes. If Obama won the 2nd District vote, he’d have 270 to McCain’s 268.

Republican Gov. Dave Heineman told the crowd Sunday that Palin “shares our values and our beliefs.” Palin said a vote for Obama would bring higher taxes, bigger government, activist judges and retreat in war.

And she promised a McCain-Palin administration would bring about energy independence, because “the cost of energy can make the difference between turning a profit and losing the farm.”

Palin also again mentioned Obama’s connection to Bill Ayers, a founder of the violent Weather Underground group during the Vietnam era.

Palin has said Obama “pals around with terrorists” because of Obama’s association with Ayers.

She said Sunday that the Obama campaigns claims that he’s “just someone in his neighborhood” isn’t true, and she said Obama “is not a man that sees America as you and I do.”

Obama and Ayers served on the same Chicago charity and live near each other in Chicago. Ayers also held a meet-the-candidate event at his home for Obama when Obama first ran for office in the mid-1990s.

Nelson said earlier Sunday that Palin’s talk of Ayers was “Swift Boat politics” and “a thinly veiled strategy to try to change the subject.”

Across the street from the Omaha rally, 22-year-old Trisha Clark held a sign that said: “I wear lipstick too but will never vote for you.”

She said Obama running mate Joe Biden “has done more for women’s rights than Sarah Palin ever will.”

“She’s no Hillary Clinton,” the Omaha Democrat said, referring to the former Democratic presidential contender.

But Connie Marmo, 53, an Omaha Republican, brought her own sign: “Sarah Palin for the Good Life.”

“I like her down-home talking,” Marmo said. “She’s a go-getter.”

Palin’s visit to Omaha is a boost for Republican Congressman Lee Terry, who’s seeking re-election in the district.

The key to Obama’s Omaha effort is a huge voter registration drive, and thousands of new Democrats added to the rolls could boost Terry opponent Jim Esch, an Omaha Democrat.

Terry said the visit shows McCain is taking the 2nd District seriously, which he’s been suggesting since the Obama effort here started.

What a ditz head. She is no more qualified to be Vice President that Bussh was to be president!
She acts like this little innocent school girl who is going to change the world cause she is a soccer mom!
Get a grip lady. Go back to alaska and take care of the bridge to nowhere!

I know Nebraska won't go blue, but I'm hoping to see at least 1 district give Obama an electoral. I'm guessig McCain's camp is thinking the same just might happen and that's why they sent Palin in to spew her usual rhetoric.

"It's the Energy Crisis stupid", McCain's only chance to win is to talk about Energy much more than he is now. The only way he can win is to convince people that the key to a better economy is cheaper energy prices. He does not need to convince me, I already know that the 'greed and collusion' of the oil and auto makers are the people stealing the money out of my pocket!

I've been on the OBiden/McPalin ticket from the beginning. I'm as informed about this election as the average American. I haven't heard anything that's going to sway me now.

I cannot stand Sarah Palin.

We're all in trouble if McCain wins, only because he may keel over in the next four years and then we would have a moron running the country.

Did the farm boy who think's he knows what a ditz iz happen to see the Dow was down 800 pts today? Mark my word, Mr. Ditz expert. Just as soon as this election is over the stock market will even out again. The world wants Obama in there bad enough to break all of our bank accounts if they have to. Palin's obviously got more class and intelligence than you, farm boy. That's why you're still a farm boy and she's running for VP. I understand you're having a hard time getting over the fact that a female really is smarter than you. This female may just end up saving your life if elected where Obama's already made it clear he's going to sell us all down the river.

I would love to see a woman elected to the White House, but Palin is not the one. She obviously has no clue about the economy, foreign affairs, education and just about every other issue vitally important to the future of this country. Rather than talking about issues she knows nothing about, she would rather spew unfounded attacks and repeat tired and meaningless accusations. If she were to actually assume the presidency, heaven help us! Please don't vote or not vote for someone on the basis of the R or D behind their name, their gender, their race, their age, a single issue or how cute they are! Take some time to read their stance on actual issues and try to make an informed decision keeping the best interest of our country in mind. This is too important to do anything else!

Sarah Palin is as qualified, if not more qualified then Obama. At least she is for the country. Obama wants to tax, tax tax tax and more tax. He want to give more to the United Nations, as if we don't already support them. This country will go to down hill faster than you can blink your eyes. Then all the lovers of Obama will cry "What happened to us"? We who have brains will say thank you to all of you clueless. Sorry farm boy!!!!

To "GoPalin"--

Don't be disrespectful to people who farm. You must be a snob to be able to say something like that. And Sarah Palin's "classiness" does not, in any way, make up for her lack of knowledge.

Palin for President. She has more common sense than the other three candidates put together.

It's about time we put someone who can still identify with the little guy in the White House.

Hey Go Palin, you are as mis-informed as your VP soccer mom. The dow was down 369 not 800 points and thats all because of your buddy George W and his saudi oil barrons. If you think this financial turnmoil is because Obama is running for president, then what rock have you been under the past 8 years while Geiorge has been spend, spend spending our hard earned tax money to fund HIS war. Clinton had or deficit under control untill King George came on board and put us back into the poor house.
Well McCain/Palin are a mere extension of the same old Bush policy.
It is time for a change and it sure aint the Bush clones or clowns!
And if it wasnt for "farm Boys" you wouldnt be feeding your face getting overweight as you read this!

Just a reminder to all who are against Palin, she is not running for President, she is running for VP. If something would happen to the president, it is true that the VP takes over, but I would much rather have Palin then Joe Biden. Biden is about as qualified as Dan Q. was, to me that is scary. Farmboy and for anybody else who is for Obama, would much rather vote for a person for predident who has hung out with some pretty radical people, who has been a leader of the group Acorn and hasa close ties to Bill Ayers, a founder of the violent Weather Underground group during the Vietnam era. Now that is scary, McCain/Palin all the way. Go Big Red and Maroon/Gold!!!

Gosh golly darn, people, can't you see I'm ready to lead? Alaska is close to Russia, that counts as foreign policy experience right?

Hey, Israel, Iran, Iraq, Egypt, Syria, Jordan, let's all hunker on down with some cocoa and some s'mores and let's figure out this dang old middle east problem, Y'all with me?

Sara Palin is a gun toting, alaskan hick. America does not need "mommy" right now, America needs leadership. And you, Sara, are not qualified.

Pretty obvious which way this race is going. Nebraska SECOND DISTRICT is in play, even though the rest of Nebraska is pretty hopeless.

BTW, I hear Chuck Hagel's wife just endorsed Obama.

It wont matter anyway about her and her old goat running mate. All the polls are showing the "dream team" losing ground each and every day.
We soon will be back on track as a great nation healing up the economic bleeding done by George W and his high paid CEO's on wall street.

To all of you blaming bush for the bailout and the present economic situation, do you need to be reminded that the democrats are the ones in power? And most if not all of the banking committee members are democrats. Now we learn the head of the banking committee, Barney Frank (and this is one example of the fine democrats we have in power) had a gay affair with a high ranking official of the Lehman. You dems are going to try to claim this affair would have no bearing on frank's decision making? Go ahead and try. Frank knew about the economic problems of Freddie and Fannie and hid the facts. This man should be indicated and prosecuted. Blame bush all you want but look what you have in your corner. Plus Pelosi, Reid, Kennedy, Schumer, ad nauseum. I would certainly sit back and shut up. Palin has more knowledge of foreign policies, running a government, diplomacy etc than Farm Boy and probably most posters on this site.

We already have a moron running our nation. As for Barack having two offices in Omaha, Omaha is a Democratic Island in the Republican Sea. It will go to Barack. Even though I am not a republican I feel for you who cringe when ever Sarah opens her mouth to speak. If I was republican wouldn’t vote for Mc Cain cause Palin is hot or her folksy vernacular.

Mary Jo the vice-president can become the President. This has happened twice in my lifetime and four times is the last therefore any vice-president must be judged on the same standards you judge a president under. Tyler became President within the first few months of Harrison's term and Truman took over 45 days after being elected. Therefore we must judge Palin and Biden as if they must take command the day they take the oath of office.
You are absolutely correct Bush had to take over for what Clinton left. An economy where the stock market was at record highs, unemployment at record lows, a projected five-year budget surplus of three trillion dollars, and all the towers of the World Trade Center jutting into the NYC's skyline. However, with unmatched skill and cunning Bush was able to end this excess of peace and prosperity. Today we are trapped in two quagmire wars, the surpluses have been converted to near runaway debts, we have had to pass an 850 Billion dollar rescue package, unemployment is nearly fifty per cent higher than it was eight years ago, credit markets are in near collapse, and American prestige is at an all-time global low.
The current President's own party actually canceled the first night of its convention rather to avoid having him appear there on television. Bush's approval is actually lower than Nixon's when he was removed from office.
So tell me again why you want to compare Bush to Clinton

Palin and foreign policy? She said "Heck I cansee Russia from Alaska" That is her definition of foreign policy. Great leader material.
SShe should stick to handing out oranges at her hockey games and leave the politics to people with experience and knowledge of how our government works.
After the Nov election she will fade away into the cold alaska winters and nbever be heard from again.
Maybe her and McCain can share some whale blubber together while figuring out what to do next after such a defeat as they will experience.

WHERE IS TRUTH
Oct 7, 2008 10:14 PM
It is so exhausting to try and figure out the truth. If you are voting for Obama because you believe wholeheartedly that Bush is responsible for all that is bad in the world and Obama is just another Bush, then it seems you have just been listening to one-sided politics. Your mind is made up and right or wrong you stand on your most likely wrong belief.

On the other hand, if you are going to vote for McCain because he is a "maverick" and is going to change things because he is so great and experienced, etc, etc... then you are just as wrong.

Truthfully, you have to look at the issues a lot closer then most of us are smart enough to do. I have heard political people, working on the campaigns blame their opposit side for this "Economic Crisis" and then praise their own side. STUPID. If you are trying to find the truth in this in what these campaign people are saying then you are nuts. Independent economic brainiacs are also divided, but most agree that it was many people's doing and not just one side. Not just the war (we have been through many wars before and this didn't happen) and not just the complete denial of there being a problem by the democratic run congress.

Just please look for the truth and don't listen to the campaign rhetoric. Be SMART and not the mindless sheep that the campaign planners think you are. PLEASE!
