Nebraska returns to action looking for victory No. 2 in a matchup against San Jose State.

The Huskers and Spartans will meet in an 11:30 a.m. Saturday contest at Memorial Stadium that will be televised on a Pay-Per-View basis.

Both teams come into the game 1-0. The Spartans came from behind to post a 13-10 win over California-Davis last week. San Jose State is coached by Dick Tomey. The 28-year coaching veteran is 176-129-7 overall and 18-19 in his fourth year at San Jose St. The Spartans are 0-1 all time against the Huskers, dropping a 49-13 decision to Nebraska in 2000.

San Jose St. is a team that will rely heavily on the pass against Nebraska. Last week, the Spartans utilized three quarterbacks before finding the right leader to earn their first victory. Kyle Reed (6-foot-3, 215 pounds, Jr.) came off the bench to spark the win. Reed will make the start against the Huskers.

The California transfer was 14-of-18 passing (77.8 percent) for 132 yards and two touchdowns against Cal-Davis last week. Reed also led the Spartans with 28 yards rushing in the opener. As a team, San Jose St. was 26-of-34 passing (76.5 percent) for 231 yards with two scores and a pair of interceptions. Myles Eden (6-1, 205, Jr.) will also likely see playing time at quarterback against the Husker defense.

The Spartans were very ineffective running the ball last week. Overall, San Jose St. only rushed for 42 yards on 24 carries against Cal-Davis. Yonus Davis (5-8, 190, Sr.) had 26 yards rushing and three catches for 25 yards last week. He is similar in size and style to Western Michigan back Brandon West the Huskers saw in their last game.

The receivers are the best unit on offense for San Jose St. The leader is Kevin Jurovich (6-0, 183, Sr.), who had 11 receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown in last week’s victory. David Richmond (6-4, 200, Sr.) added six catches for 60 yards, while Jalal Beauchman (6-4, 220, Jr.) chipped in four grabs for 40 yards. Tight end Jeff Clark (6-6, 250, Sr.) makes a nice big target for the Spartan quarterbacks as well.

As a group, the Spartan offensive line is younger and smaller than most of which the Huskers will face this season. San Jose State has no seniors in their starting offensive line. Both tackles are small for Division I football, each weighing no more than 280 pounds. The guards have good size, with Nathaniel Timo (6-0, 335, Jr.) on the left side and Ailao Eliapo (6-3, 320, So.) on the right side. From tackle to tackle, San Jose State averages nearly 6-3 and 299 pounds per man. The offensive line allowed four sacks last week which may mean the Husker defense will bring a great deal of pressure against the Spartans.

Defensively, San Jose State will use a 4-3 scheme. Last week, it was stingy giving up only 61 yards on the ground and 193 through the air against Cal-Davis. The big-play man up front for the Spartans is defensive end Carl Ihenacho (6-3, 245, Jr.). Ihenacho led the way last week with nine total tackles and the only sack. The key run stopper is defensive tackle Adonis Davis (6-2, 295, Jr.). This group must play well or Nebraska will make it a long afternoon for San Jose St.

The linebackers are led by Travis Jones (6-1, 220, Jr.) in the middle. Jones had five total tackles last week. Outside linebacker Justin Cole (6-3, 240, Jr.) provides good size and strength to this group for San Jose St. The secondary has the most experience returning. Cornerback Coye Francies (6-1, 185, Sr.) had eight tackles, including a team high six solo stops in the season opening victory. The safeties are an interesting pair. Senior Kyle Flynn (6-2, 205) is a hitter in the defensive backfield, while sophomore Devin Newsome (5-10, 165) is undersized with great quickness. Newsome and Chris Owens (5-10 170, Sr.) each had interceptions in the opener.

Special teams for the Spartans were not overly impressive in week one. Kicker Jared Strubeck (5-8, 182, Sr.) was 0 of 2 on field goals and 1 of 2 on extra point attempts last week. The punting game averaged 37.6 yards per kick last week. Junior Philip Zavala (6-1, 200) will be the man doing the punting for the Spartans. Defensive back Cote Francis averaged 30.7 yards per kickoff return last week and Jurovich is sure handed as the punt returner.

Overall, this should be a mismatch. San Jose St. is not a good running team and does not have as many weapons in the passing game as Western Michigan did a week ago. The offensive line is small and gives up some sacks against pressure. The defense played well in the opener, but the Husker offense is much stronger than Cal-Davis. Too much talent in the red jerseys leads to a 52-17 win for Nebraska over San Jose State.

...way to "go deep" on that prediction, Doze. They're playing a couple of Junior Varsity teams. WHat about when they ACTUALLY start playing teams?

Here's a "deep" prediction for you.....5-7 final record with NO BOWL (again).

It's over, people. Find something else to do.

oh gee, it shows that you really do not know much about football whatsoever!! Take a look at our schedule fool!! It's easily a 7 or 8 win season without a doubt. If you don't have a TV, I will buy you one so you can watch all the games and our opponents!!

seriously- your tv must not work, otherwise you would have seen how bad NU really was. its been the same thing the past 6 years, everyone gets excited about going 4-1 5-0 and then they get into big 12 play and everyone is like " what happened." if they played like they did sat. its not going to be an "easy" 7 or 8 win.

All you "experts" need to build a bridge and get over it. Enjoy the whole college football season!

One of the previous commentators is overly pessimistic at 5-7, though he could be right. The other is slightly optimistic at 7 or 8 wins (the latter is reasonable only if Virginia Tech is as bad as they looked against East Carolina), but dead wrong to use the terms "easily" and "without a doubt."
My pre-season 7-5 pick still feels good and looks better now that a win over Virginia Tech may be as likely as a loss to Colorado.

Personally I would like to see the Huskers have maybe a 80/20 run to pass ratio this game. Just run the ball. Get some reps for all three running backs. Stuff the ball down the defense's throat. We need to get that type of work done for future games. Although the offense has a quality passing game the ability to control the ball on the ground will be crucial in league play against Missouri, Kansas, Texas Tech etc. Given the talent in the backfield maybe Bo and Shawn should watch some old tape of Roger Craig, Mike Rozier and Tom Rathman. With Turner Gill and Irving Fryer as a threat thru the air, the running game set up the tempo for the game and managed the clock in the Huskers favor.

Yes we will not lose a game in September. But we will lose 4 or 5 before the season is over. No big XII championship probably some smaller December bowl game like it or not this will be the reality this year.

ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MINDS???? OK, AT BEST........6-6 with an appearence in the Home Gallery Art.com Bowl in early December.

The Blue/Grey Bowl would be a better game.

It's crazy to say another 5-7 year. Last year's defensive meltdown was not normal. That defense wasn't that bad, they just played defeated after USC. To say Nebraska will go 5-7 again means they will lose multiple games that they are favored in. They should be favored in every game except Mizzou, TT, Ok, Kansas, CU. I expect NU to win at least one of those but two seems more realistic. Jeez with no defense in Boulder the offense put 50 points on the board. I think NU can beat KU and CU.

Sure we will beat everyone in Non-conference play, But the defense is still going to get burned bad against the likes of Missouri, Texas Tech and Oklahoma. No matter how much we hope, these teams are still on a whole different level.

NU WILL WIN ALL OF ITS NON CONFERENCE GAMES AND ALL OF THE CONFERENCE GAMES THAT THEY ARE EXPECTED TO WIN (IOWA ST,BAYLOR), BUT ALSO FEEL STRONGLY THAT THEY WILL HAVE AT LEAST 1 OR 2 (MAYBE MORE) UPSET WINS. ALSO, WHATS WRONG WITH A EARLY DECEMBER BOWL GAME ANYWAY? WE DIDNT PLAY IN ANY BOWL GAMES LAST YEAR, AND IF YOU WOULD HAVE ASKED ME, IN EARLY DECEMBER, (LAST YEAR) IF I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO SEE THEM PLAY IN A "SUB-PAR" BOWL GAME I WOULD HAVE SAID HELL YES!!!!!!!!!!!ARE WE MICHIGAN FANS OR HUSKER FANS?

I gaurantee an 8 win season. What you think missouri will crush us? Did anyone watch their defense last week? They got destroyed, and by who Juice Williams and his average Illinois squad. Juice would be 3rd sting at best if he played for NU, sloppy passing and bad judgement. Our offense will keep up with anyone in the nation, yes our defense isnt where it needs to be but it is young and can only improve. GANZ FOR HEISMAN!

Wow it seems like we have alot of experts on here. Considering how many upsets I have seen already, I dont think anyone really has a clue how we are going to do. As long as we can get a bowl game this year, who cares what are record is, it would be better then last year.

Yeah, the last few years as a husker fan have sucked, but just wait, look at Alabama. I hope by then all the bandwagoners will have fallen off. It's easy to be a fan in the mid 90's what about now?

To Play with anyone- Did you see the Missouri game? I think they won 52-42, and the Illini scored on the last play of the game. The Average Illini squad you speak of is still ranked in the top 25 and Missouri top 10. You are the reason Husker fans seem to be losing class. Talk bad about good teams and you think that makes us look good. My friend Missouri will be at least a 12 point fav. when they come to Lincoln. Are the experts wrong are just you?
