COLUMBUS -- Columbus’ Troy Bergman took the Open Street Stock points lead in impressive fashion at U.S. 30 Speedway Thursday night.

Bergman led the final seven laps of the 15-lap feature and cruised to his third victory of the season. He came into the race tied with North Bend’s Dusty Poessnecker for the points lead, but he left with a three-point lead with Poessnecker finishing fourth.

The race went caution-free and only took six minutes to complete.

“It was a nice, fast track tonight,” Bergman said. “There were a lot of good cars here, and things just went our way.”

Dwight’s Mike Goldfuss took second, while Doniphan’s Herb Slough finished a distant third. Duncan’s Joe Runquist took sixth, and Columbus’ Rudy Brunkhorst and Terry Wallingford, Jr. finished seventh and eighth, respectively.

Bergman said the key to the race was moving to the lead as soon as possible.

“I was able to get out front right away and didn’t get caught up in traffic,” Bergman said.

Rogers’ Eric Cerny was awarded the win in the Hobby Stock feature, even though he didn’t cross the finish line first.

Cerny was leading going into the final turn when Rising City’s Shane Hiatt got into the side of his car and knocked him out of the way and seemingly took the win.

But U.S. 30 track officials ruled that Hiatt wouldn’t have made the pass without making contact and dropped the points leader to a second-place finish.

“It was a good race,” Cerny said. “It was a fast track tonight, and I had a lot of fun. (Hiatt) made good contact with me. It would have been an interesting finish without the contact, and we probably would have finished nose-to-nose. I’m sorry we couldn’t have a better ending, but I’ll take the win.”

Rising City’s Nick Topil took third in the race, and David City’s Brandon Kresha finished fourth.

Columbus’ Zach Reicks and Allen Houdesheldt took fifth and sixth, respectively. Duncan’s Derek Spragg came in ninth.

Nick Wehrle cruised to the win in the Limited Late Models feature. He took the lead on the third lap and led the rest of the way.

The 20-lap race included no cautions and only took eight minutes to complete.

York’s Les Siebert finished second, and Norfolk’s Robert Osborne took third. Albion’s Mike Kelley and Tyler Iverson took fourth and 10th, respectively.

Norfolk’s Jeremy Barg led all 10 laps and took the checkered flag in the Hornets feature.

Norfolk’s Shannon Pospisil finished second, while Cerny took third. Shelby’s Beth Wombacher finished fifth, and Osceola’s Austin Brauner took sixth. Columbus’ Jeremy Shanahan and Dylan Ganskow took ninth and 10th, respectively.

Momentum will be key in the points races with just two weeks of action remaining.

“I want to thank my guys for the good tune up on the car,” Bergman said. “Thanks to all my sponsors for their support and to the Lord for watching over us and keeping us safe. Hopefully, we can carry this momentum through the end of the season.”

I have always said US 30 was a good place to attend the races, but after what US 30 did for hobby stock win (family) to get a win! Many of the officals at the track (not family) said the owner of US 30 was wrong! Actually watch the tape! It will tell you who hit who! But again its family! Any good racer will hold his line and Family! did not! I went to pits after races and talked to drivers and others but what is really interesting is the car that won his right rear was damage and the 2nd place car (family winner) his left front fender was damage! Again family! I made my point and I will not come back! Its the Family thing to do!

You call that a little bump. Hiatt was a little out of line sticking his nose down low and shoving Cerny up and out of the way. Thats dirty racing to me. Hes been doing that all season. How come he has not got black flagged for playing bumper cars all season.

You know, I cannot believe how many people seriously get the mind set that because you are family and/or good friends with someone who owns an establishment, such as the race track, that they are automatically favored in all aspects. People who are related to the family of US30 have just as much of a right to be there and race and compete as any other person. Its a shame that they are automatically accused of things just because they are family or close friends. Accidents happen, hitting each other on the track happens, it's inevitable. If you know the aspects of racing, you know this. It doesn't matter who's fault it is, it's going to happen to everyone at some point in time.

Were you watching the same race as me?? Hiatt slammed him to pass him, sad too, had he done it cleanly it would have been a heck of a finish. I like Shane, but you can't get away with it on the final lap for 1st place. I think it was a good call, regardless of who the other car was. I don't think they played a "family" favorite. What the heck was up with 7R? He had to bump to pass too. I heard he got knocked down 1 place for hitting 11X. I don't think they are related to anyone at the speedway, maybe it was just fair officiating and no one is used to seeing that at other tracks.

What official said it was the owner that made the call? All "true" officials had a chance to voice their opinion when the call was made and believe me, it was unamious, he slammed him for the position. The owner wasn't the one to make the call. "Family" had nothing to do with this. Rough driving is rough driving and needs to be called to control it. Sad too, Hiatt didn't need to do it.

Bravo to the US 30 officials for finally making the RIGHT call. Hiatt was lucky he wasn't put clear to the back!! Guess the new flagman has a pair and won't tolerate crap like that. Good job to all the winners last night especially Troy and Eric. If the track was playing favorites i dont think Cerny wouyld have went to the back in the hornet race.

Apparently the track made the right call, because I saw and heard Hiatt go up to Cerny and apologize for hitting him. The two drivers shook hands and joked around.. comon everyone can't we all just get along... ;)

I have to wonder if these people that think Hiatt got cheated would feel the same way if the positions were reversed. If Cerny bumped Hiatt for the win and they took it away would they still be crying foul????? I think not.... They are just a bunch of Hiatt fans that thing he got cheated. I too heard him walk over and apologize to Eric, saying he does want to race that way. Good job boys and see ya next week. As for Robby if you don't like it stay away and keep your comments to yourself.

BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND! I am a Nebraska football season ticket holder also like NCAA basketball & baseball just so happens to be in between seasons right now so I have spare time for this crap. Hot food cold drinks & a good game on the big screen that is a fun night. Not like any of these local drivers will ever make it to NASCAR which is also a joke. What is the sellout record for US 30 speedway how many in a row????????

Race fans do not get into stupid arguments with ignorant people like "robby". I am sure race fans look at it as just plain "fun" and enjoyment. That's what really matters!

robby~
who the heck are you to be throwing neagative comments on racing? Racing is important to a heck of a lot of people, myself included. I've grown up around the sport, and it is one of the best things about life as far as i am concerned. Its a place to go and experiance horse power, competition and just plain fun. The "regulars" become 2nd family that you can depend of for about anything. You met amazing lifetime friends that all share the same passion in life. Its a great place for Columbus' youth to get involved in something positive. There are 14, 15 and 16 yr old kids that would rather go racing on the weekends then go get in trouble w/drugs and the law. Racing just isnt about the cars going in circles. Its the thunder of the engines, the horsepower, competition, friends, family, the tradition and all around ambiance that makes it a passion. Those of you that dont understand it, your seriously missing out. And about what happened on thursday, shane hiatt is good people, its some people associated w his crew that start the problems. the past is the past, see ya all on thursday
