Food pantry hours expanded

COLUMBUS -- The Platte County Food Pantry has expanded its weekly hours to include Thursday evenings from 5-7 p.m.

The pantry will continue its regular hours from 10-11:30 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday and from 2-4 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday.

To qualify for assistance an individual needs to bring a photo ID, social security cards for members of the family desiring assistance, and a bill showing current address. The Food Pantry is looking for volunteers for the Thursday evening hours and some daytime hours.

Foster parent training set

COLUMBUS -- Building Blocks will be conducting a foster parent training session beginning in September 2008.

These classes are free of charge and are offered to anyone interested in becoming a foster parent or providing respite care.

Daze flea market deadline today

BELLWOOD -- The Bellwood Daze Flea Market and Craft Sale is planned for Aug. 1-3 at the old Firehouse.

There is still room for vendors who wish to sell. Deadline for reserving a booth is today.

The flea market and craft sale will run from 4-8 p.m. Aug. 1; from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Aug. 2; and from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Aug. 3.

Christian preschool applications taken

COLUMBUS -- Columbus Christian Preschool is currently accepting applications for the 2008-09 school year.

Two-day (Monday and Wednesday) and three-day (Monday, Wednesday and Friday) morning classes are available for children ages 4-5 years old.

Sports injuries workshop today

LINDSAY -- The Emergency Medical Services Program of the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services will offer a workshop on “Sports Injuries” for emergency medical technicians and first responders.

The workshop will be held from 7-10 p.m. today at the Lindsay Fire Hall, 2nd and Pine Street. This workshop is worth three continuing education hours.

Woman’s club to meet Wednesday

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Christian Woman’s Club will welcome speaker Kelley Lane of Wichita, Kan., at a luncheon 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the American Legion Club, 2263 Third Ave.

Lane will speak on the topic of “living in a rut and loving it.” The program also includes musical selections by Megan Behlen and a flag demonstration by Jean Chestnut.

Cost is $8 and reservations are due Tuesday by calling Barb at 564-0616 or Dorothy at 564-4036. Nursery is available for young children with reservation.

Hospice in need of volunteers

COLUMBUS -- AseraCare Hospice is looking for volunteers in the Columbus area to provide support to hospice patients and their families.

Anyone 18 years of age or older is encouraged to attend a free volunteer training session from 9:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, 2710 14th St.

CHS class of ’88 reunion scheduled

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus High School Class of 1988 is having its 20-year reunion at 6:30 p.m. Friday at Platte County Agricultural Park.

There also will be an event at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at the Elks Country Club.

Musical Soiree set for David City

DAVID CITY -- The first annual Musical Soiree on the Square in David City is looking for participants to take part in the Butler County Music Clinic conducted by Mistyn Kozisek.

Instruction for the clinic will take place from July 25-31 with each participant receiving two-three hours of instruction. Students will then have an opportunity to perform in small groups or as soloists at 7 p.m. July 31 in the former First Baptist Church located at Seventh and E Streets. Brochures can be picked up at the Hruska Memorial Public Library or at Bone Creek Museum of Agrarian Art.
