Little Bo’s regulars look back at good memories

COLUMBUS -- For four decades George Evans would go to Little Bo’s to unwind, have a drink and converse with friends.

Evans doesn’t know where they will congregate after July 31, the last day for the locally owned and operated bar and night club.

Evans has been a loyal customer since the bar was The 20s Lounge and continued to patron the establishment after it transformed into the Backwoods Bar and later Little Bo’s.

He said he remembers when there was little in the area, sans Hy-Vee and the mall.

“It use to just be a mud lot. (The area) looks a lot different that it use to,” he said.

Brad Baker, co-owner of Little Bo’s, said a bar establishment in the building has been the only business that has endured since the facility was built in 1964.

Rod Baker, another co-owner, said they have known this day would come for more than three years, since the plans for Hy-Vee were in the works.

“We have known for three to four years that the lease would not be renewed,” Rod said, meaning the end of Little Bo’s 20-year tenure.

He said no one at Little Bo’s wants to leave, but he understands the vision the building owner has for the place and holds no grudge since it is simply a business decision.

“He could have had us out last year, but allowed us to stay through the last year of our liquor license,” Rod said. “To me it’s just a business decision,” and Little Bo’s may not fit in with a jewelry store, fitness facility, housing agency and sophisticated grocery store.

To replace the local watering hole, the area will be divided in half with one section already leased by a gift and home decoration store and the other open to a tenant who wants to lease the property, according to Tom Kumpf of Re-Max Total Realty Inc., the leasing agent for the building.

Dr. Jagmohan Desai, a former Norfolk physician and owner of the building, said a bar did not fit into the remodeling plans he had for the area.

“We did not renew the lease because we have plans to remodel that area. It was a business decision,” Desai said, and a drinking establishment did not fit into that picture.

Rod said as for him and his brothers, they are in the process of buying The Vineyard with the potential for expanding the building to transform it into a sports bar and grill.

“It would not be a night club or have a dance floor,” he said.

As for the last three weeks, he said they would operate as they have been, but offer more drink specials.

“We have blowouts every weekend,” Rod said, but he foresees a lot of people wanting to support Little Bo’s on its last night, especially “a lot of them old guys,” such as Crip Sedlacek and Evans.

Sedlacek, who also has been a patron since the 1960s, said it will be sad to see the pool table gone and the bar close.

“It has been a good place for a long time,” he said. “I don’t like seeing it close.”

Brad said the things he will miss most come Aug. 1 are the loyal and dedicated customers and staff, like Dave Flannigan.

Flannigan has seen the changes to the bar and was a patron during The 20s Lounge era and has been an employee of two of the bars, having worked as the night manager for more than 25 years.

He said although people in the area have a bad perception of Little Bo’s, the regulars, and there are a lot of them as the bar is at capacity every weekend, know that reputation is undeserved since such story heralding incidents are infrequent.

“We had a great reputation with the customers that did come here,” Flannigan said. “We’ve had really great, loyal customers.”

Rod said he often hears stories of fights or debauchery happening on a weekly or daily basis, even if such an incident hasn’t occurred for months, which are often echoed by people who rarely, if ever, enter Little Bo’s.

Rather, Little Bo’s has tried to appeal to a broad audience, Rod said, by offering a wide variety of entertainment, from hypnotists and comedians to karaoke, bands and DJ dances.

Flannigan said Little Bo’s closure is disappointing, but he may have a way to relive this chapter in his life.

“I may have to buy a gazebo (from the new shop) and put it in the back of my pickup, he said, “and have a drink in the parking lot” in honor of the long-standing bar.

Evans said he may follow the Bakers to The Vineyard, but at this time he is disappointed to see the doors close.

But “a bar is a bar,” he said, and “all good things must come to an end.”

Where will we go to see Friday Night Fights and Satuday Slug Fests? Biguns?

I might have to go out and buy a new wife beater as it will be my last time to hit on "technically" married girls.

It's sad to see Little Bo's close. I remember well over the years how much fun I had there the people and the staff were great to me everytime I was there. I remember playing softball for the 20's lounge in the late 70's that was a blast> I moved to Texas in 1980 and returned in 1986 and helped a friend reopen Little bo's in Lincoln and the after it closed in 1988 the name carried on up to Columbus and it was a standard fixture in Lincoln for 50 years. The best of luck to the Baker's they are excellent people.

The best part of this article is when he says "The bar is at capacity every weekend" ha that is funny !!!!!!!!!! Everyone knows it is way over capacity no place to sit or stand & sure could not get out in the event of an emergency. I am surprised they never got busted for being over the fire code. Well I guess there is still 3 weeks to go ?

Well- that's it. No more dancing in Columbus. As far as I know that was the last place in Columbus that had an actual dance floor (small as it was), that had music every weekend, and stayed open more than 6 months. Worse yet, the owners are thinking of building ANOTHER STUPID SPORTS BAR & GRILL! Helloooo! Doesn't anyone in this town like to dance anymore? Is that all Columbus is about is sports on tv and sitting on their butts? UGH! Like this town needed ANOTHER SPORTS BAR! Ridiculous!!!!!

Are you kidding? This is going to have a terrible impact on the local economy.
The doctors and pharmacies are going to lose out since now the main breeding ground for STD's is gone. Not to mention all the fights that caused injuries. The police will lose funding since now they won't have anybody to pull over or stop fighting between the hours of 12 and 2 A.M. Amigo's will lose revenue from all the drunk people going over to spend their last bit of welfare on soft tacos. (Don't worry, Amigo's, I'll still come! I don't drink at that low-life bar.)

See? I could go on. This is a travesty. But you know, what's even more sad is what that place became over the years. It really used to be a gentlemen's bar. Now it's full of scum.

The day Hy-Vee moved in was the day your clock started ticking. I've never been more thankful to see a grocey store in all my life (including when i starved for 4 days during an ice storm.)

I would have to say that when I was a bit younger, Little Bo's was the place to be. A bit of a meat market but still fun. It was so much fun having somewhere to go to dance and have a good time. I met my husband there 7 years ago, so for anybody who say's that nothing good ever came out of Little Bo's is wrong. They need to find somewhere else, somewhere more fitting than where they are.

Evreyone on here is either glad it is closing "never been there" but it sounds to me evreyone has. you all know that there were "fights" or evreything else. I agree it took a turn for the worse, but in all honesty what hasn't. Columbus needs a nice place to dance and have a good time.

God, that was the one place i actually danced with a guy, that at the time I thought was worth dancing with. He ended up treating me like a piece of crap, maybe next time? And very funny "it was better then glurs."

No great loss IMO. Been there a few times over the years, and generally didn't care one way or the other. So far as the boozers and fighters, the new dive has to be the Reeves place. This place will be the pit that some Columbus residents cannot live without.
Ill admit it

Everyone constantly bags on Little Bo's but, in reality, it can be really entertaining. Get over yourself if you think/thought you were too highbrow for it. My crowd probably was too, but yet EVERY time we went there we had a blast people-watching and boozing. They also had better table service than most of the bars in Columbus.

Plus, is it more fun to sit in a bar reminiscent of your buddy's garage (ie, Oasis) with boring music and people, or go to a place like Bo's where you are guaranteed something awesome will occur (even if it is a fight or big ol' girls on the dance floor shakin' it)? I will miss Bo's and the fun it provided us on otherwise boring nights.

I must say I am a little sad to see Bo's close. It was always filled with white trash. It was entertaining to watch the women wearing clothes that did not fit, they were falling out of, or was not appropriate for their age. We always picked out the worst dressed! We also had a great time dancing. It was one place you could guarantee would have good music and people on the dance floor. Didn't Signatures have a dance floor and even a cage in the back room? Does anybody know if that is still there?
too bad...
Jul 11, 2008 10:29 AM
I am sad to see it close up. I met my husband there 9 years ago and we are still going strong. I went for the loud music and just be able to dance and have a good time. Be free and have no worries for one night. I don't care what bar you go to in town, there is going to be that one girl that looks like trash, or the 2 guys or girls fighting with each other. I have seen it first hand. At one downtown local bar, in the same night, I seen one girl get kicked out for displaying herself to all and the cops called because 2 girls were beating the crap out of each other in front of the bar. For those of you that were not regulars might have had that one bad experience. Don't hate. They have done a great job over the years packing the people in there. You all will be missed. Ignore the ignorant. They are probably the ones that went to the bar to display themselves and never got any of the attention they always heard other people talk about. I don't care what anyone says...you guys "rock"!!!!

too loud, too many fights, drunks,smoke-filled, crowded, lions, tigers and bears..oh my! if you didn't like the place, fine. your opinion. if like many, who made friends, had fun, and may miss the place, stop back and tell them.
GOOD LUCK Bake and staff! see you at the tee box!
you can have a beer anywhere, i just like to have one with friends when in town. if you're still complaining, try getting out of columbus and blog about something different.

Well- I'm not "college-age" so I don't hear about all the new bars opening (and usually closing just a few months later) in this town. However, even if I had heard of an establishment called "Bigunz" my first thought would have been it was probably a strip joint of some sort, not a regular bar with a dance floor. (that was a joke for those of you who will now spout that there are no strip joints in this town). But now knowing that there is another dance place, I'll have to give it a try. Hopefully there will be people of all ages there and not just the "20-somethings"...
just gonna miss it
Jul 11, 2008 12:47 PM
To all you haters: get over it, rememeber when you could do your laundry next door. That place was still the only bar you could come home to and know you would see someone you knew, even after not living there for years. It was a great place to catch-up with old friends. You will be missed by those of us who still know how to rock.!!!! Where will I go now when I come home and want to dance..???

I shall miss Little Bo's. It was the place to go and meet your friends. Now that I live in Flordia it is difficult to keep in contact with them but I always knew that all I had to do was walk into Bo's and it would be like old times again.

*If you want a place with "quiet" music so you can talk with your friends, stay home.
*If you want to see women (and men) wear "proper" clothes and act like ladies and gentelmen, go to church.
*If you want a smoke free place to get drunk, stay home.
*If you want somewhere that is not a
"breeding ground for STD's", keep it in your pants.
*If you want a bar where there is never any fights...GOOD LUCK!
Sorry to see you go Bo's!

My favorite memories of Little Bo's was pre-expansion. It was owned by Bob Early. Happy Hour(s) on Friday's, Comedy acts on Tuesday's. Pre-Karaoke. Bob had a bell he would ring, meaning drinks on the house. He must have liked the sound of that bell, cause he rang it frequently.

I will miss Bo's. Say what you want, but every time I come back to town, I can go there to get a drink and without fail will see people that I went to school with or were friends with "back in the day". The staff always did a good job (it really does have the best table service of any bar in Columbus) and the drinks were always made right.

Also, a bit of news that will shock those who go on about how terrible of a place it is....

It has nothing to do with the bar itself and everything to do with people. A bar is just a building with some beer adds an the walls. Any problem that you think is going to miraculously go away when Bo's closes is just going to go somewhere else.

So by all means, keep your knives sharp so you can take stabs at the next group of folks who are just trying to make a living and provide a fun place for old friends to go to.

Isn't it ironic don't you think ? It was hyvee who done in Lil Bo's it was hyvee that stole all the business from the vineyard & it will be hyvee that continues to be the #1 seller of wine & spirits that forces the new vineyard LB'S to close. A job well done I gotta run now it's off to hyvee to pick up some cold refreshments later !

Lots of great memories at Bo's and Backwoods for me too!! Wow...make me feel old! Have met alot of awesome people over the years that have become good friends. Weither it be the owners, staff or customers. Wish the Bakers, Dave, Sharon, Lisa, Baldy and the rest of the staff the best of luck in their next adventure.

Bo's is hands down the trashiest bar in Columbus, but I'm not going to lie, I always have a great time when I go there. Good music, good dancing, good drinks, good prices. I don't live in Columbus anymore, and really don't go to Bo's when I'm back, but it is definitely a great place to go every once in a while; definitely a change of "scenery" shall I say. Bo's has definitely gotten a bad reputation over the years, and although some (or most) of it is true, I can't say I won't miss it. Good luck to the owners and employees in all future ventures!

Also...get ready Biggunz....your sales are about to sky rocket!

I'm not gonna lie I don't know yet if I will Miss Bo's or not. Only Time will tell. Yea I have heard you don't know what you got until it's gone but it's not always true. Examples : I do not miss Village Inn or The Lark or Big Apple Bagel or Fun Water Hot Tubs or Panda Garden one bit. However I dearly do miss Hardees & Little King & Blimpies & Sports Page & Sonic Drive Inn

Thinking back to The Twenties Lounge in the early 70's. Nickel Beer, Buck pitchers at happy hour. Those gorgeous little Bohemian gals that showed up when John , Swanny, Alan, and the rest of "toast & Jam" played. If we all met again we would be scared silly at how old, gray, fat, bald, and slow we all are now.

I was there last night had a great time. Did no see anything in the bar that was out of line. Only downfall was all the bikers outside after bar closed revving up making too much unnecessary noise. Little things like that give the place a bad name. Show some respect don't do stupid stuff like that to show off it really proves nothing.
