COLUMBUS — Cleanup has begun, and a new shuffleboard has been ordered in the effort to reclaim and restore the Pawnee Bar from damage sustained in a fire last Friday morning.
Ray Nance, deputy state fire marshal, said late Wednesday that the cause of the fire remains unknown. He said the fire started in the south part of the bar and that damages were estimated at $100,000.
Earlier Wednesday, Ron Sedlak, owner of the popular bar located at 653 33rd Avenue, thought the results of the investigation wouldn’t be available for a couple of days,
Local crews from Master Care and Forman Supply worked to remove the charred debris and Ron’s son, Joe, and his friends moved salvageable items from the bar this morning in preparation for the remodeling that is to come in the near future.
“We’ve got crews of four to eight employees down there right now,” said Jerry Jarecke, owner of Master Care Carpet, Cleaning & Painting Inc. “Our part of this is to completely gut the building, clean the floors, bathrooms, pull out the walls and then seal everything up. Our part won’t take all that long but the entire remodeling will take at least four to six weeks, I would think.”
Barb Sedlak said she was appreciative of all the help and support shown her family since the fire closed the bar.
“We’ve really enjoyed all the support and the comments on this story that were on the Web site (columbustelegram.com),” Barb said. “The help we’re getting from the cleanup crews and all those who’ve come to help has been wonderful,”
The Pawnee was established in 1974 and is owned and operated by Ron and Barb Sedlak, of Columbus.
Nearly 20 Columbus firefighters were dispatched to the fire at The Pawnee Bar at 7:03 a.m. Friday. Columbus Fire Chief Dean Hefti said: “Everybody did an excellent job on this.”
