Warning sirens test Saturday

COLUMBUS -- The monthly Platte County test of the outdoor warning sirens in will be conducted Saturday at 11 a.m.

A test of the Columbus general fire siren will be conducted at the same time. In the event of severe weather in the area the test will be canceled.

The outdoor warning sirens are tested at 11 a.m. on the first Saturday of the month from April through October.

The public is asked to report a malfunctioning siren to the Columbus Police Department at 564-3201 or to Columbus/Platte County Emergency Management at 564-1206.

‘Morris 2 Morris’ to perform tonight

COLUMBUS -- As part of the Downtown Business Association’s ‘Lawnchairs on the Square’ series, the Columbus Area Arts Council will be sponsoring “Morris 2 Morris” from 7-8:30 p.m. today at Frankfort Square.

This father-son musical duo is from Crete and is headed by Columbus native Michael Morris. They will perform jazz and popular music from the ’60s and ’70s.

Cemetery to be closed Friday

COLUMBUS -- Roselawn Cemetery will be closed the evening of July 3 beginning at 6 p.m.

Activities set for Fullerton’s Fourth

FULLERTON -- The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce will celebrate the Fourth of July with a Veterans Memorial dedication, a parade, children’s activities, food and other activities.

Fireworks will be displayed at dusk.

Sertoma to put out flags for Fourth

COLUMBUS -- The Sertoma Club of Columbus will be putting out flags around the city of Columbus on the Fourth of July.

Members of Sertoma, which stands for Service to Mankind, put out flags nine times a year. The project provides the club with revenue to fund scholarships and helps the club to assist youth and to benefit a variety of other local community needs.

Sertoma meets at noon each Wednesday at the New World Inn.

Benefit set up for Haddix-Tech family

COLUMBUS -- A benefit for the Haddix-Tech family has been established at Cornerstone Bank.

Nickela Nicole Haddix-Tech, 22, Damien Haddix, 5, and infant daughter Natalie Tech died in an automobile accident.

To contribute to the Haddix-Tech Memorial Fund, contact Cornerstone Bank at its Columbus locations.

Caedon Brabec benefit established

COLUMBUS -- A savings account has been established for Caedon Brabec, son of Greg and Laci Brabec of Columbus.

Caedon recently suffered a ruptured appendix and is currently at Children’s Hospital in Omaha. He is expected to remain in the hospital for several weeks.

Anyone wishing to help the family with medical and related expenses can make a donation at any Cornerstone Bank location.

Benefit accounts set up for Reicks

COLUMBUS -- Two benefit fund accounts have been established for JoLyn Reicks of Columbus, who was injured in an automobile accident earlier this year.

Reicks’ friends and family members are asking for financial contributions to help retrofit her home for wheelchair accessibility and to provide for other needs.

Contributions can be made at Nebraska Energy Federal Credit Union, P.O. Box 499, 1414 15th St., Columbus; or at Bank of the West - JoLyn Reicks, 2714 23rd St., Columbus.

YMCA preschool applications taken

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Family YMCA is now accepting applications for their 2008-09 preschool program.

Classes for 3 year olds will be from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday-Thursday; classes for 4 and 5 year olds will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. or from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The preschool is state licensed, and the curriculum is designed to help children develop critical thinking skills needed to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. The first semester of preschool begins Sept. 8 and runs through Dec. 12. Class size is limited.

Storm chaser to speak Tuesday

GRAND ISLAND -- The public is invited to hear a firsthand account of what it is like to be a storm chaser from Eddy Weiss, director of Chasing4Life.

Central Community College-Grand Island will sponsor the free program from 7-10 p.m. Tuesday at the College Park Auditorium.

The evening will feature breathtaking photography and unbelievable stories from this nationally known storm chaser and educator. Weiss will share the excitement of chasing storms as well as the need for safety.

Attendees will have an opportunity to examine the Chasing4Life chase vehicles and have their questions answered by Weiss. Advanced registration is required for this event.
