COLUMBUS -- A benefit for the Haddix-Tech family has been established at Cornerstone Bank.

Nickela Nicole Haddix-Tech, 22, Damien Haddix, 5, and infant daughter Natalie Tech died in an automobile accident.

Safety, health meeting July 10

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Safety and Health Council will have a meeting from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, July 10, at Dusters.

Sign up for YMCA preschool

COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Family YMCA is now accepting applications for their 2008-09 preschool program.

Classes for 3 year olds will be from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday-Thursday; classes for 4 and 5 year olds will be from 8:30-11:30 a.m. or from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

The preschool is state licensed, and the curriculum is designed to help children develop critical thinking skills needed to succeed in kindergarten and beyond. The first semester of preschool begins Sept. 8 and runs through Dec. 12. Class size is limited.

CCC-C student orientation July 16

COLUMBUS -- A new student orientation session is scheduled for 9 a.m. on Wednesday, July 16, at Central Community College-Columbus.

Participants will have the opportunity to tour the campus, meet with college staff and students, attend WebCentral training and learn important information about the campus.

There also will be registration for classes available after orientation is complete. Individuals must register before the orientation session. New students must already have been accepted by the college and taken the ASSET or COMPASS pre-enrollment assessment tests before they can attend orientation.

‘Robin Hood’ open auditions July 28

COLUMBUS -- The Missoula Children’s Theatre International Tour Project will be having open auditions for the Aug. 2 production of “Robin Hood” for children entering grades 1-12.

The auditions are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. July 28 at the CCC-Fine Art Theater, and will last two hours. Late arrivals will not be admitted to the audition. A $20 participation fee is required for those cast in the production.

The audition kicks off a week-long theatre residency to include rehearsals, theatre workshops, and final performances at 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the CCC- Fine Art Theater.

There are roles suited for all ages, skill and experience levels; no prior experience or preparation is necessary.

‘Morris 2 Morris’ to play Thursday

COLUMBUS -- As part of the Downtown Business Association’s ‘Lawnchairs on the Square’ series, the Columbus Area Arts Council will be sponsoring “Morris 2 Morris” from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday at Frankfort Square.

This father-son musical duo is from Crete and is headed by Columbus native Michael Morris. They will perform jazz and popular music from the ’60s and ’70s.

Sertoma Club putting flags out

COLUMBUS -- The Sertoma Club of Columbus will be putting out flags around the city of Columbus on the Fourth of July.

Members of Sertoma, which stands for Service to Mankind, put out flags nine times a year.

The project provides the club with revenue to fund scholarships and helps the club to assist youth and to benefit a variety of other local community needs.

Sertoma meets at noon each Wednesday at the New World Inn.

St. Bonaventure garden tour July 9

COLUMBUS -- The St. Bonaventure Church Garden Tour is scheduled for 4:30-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 9.

Tickets are $5, available at Tooley Drug, Barbara Jean’s, Hy-Vee, St. Bonaventure’s Parish Rectory.

Participants will see six local gardens, with $2 pontoon rides available around Christopher’s Cove. No children allowed on tour due to water hazards that will be present.

Storm chaser to talk July 8

GRAND ISLAND -- The public is invited to hear a firsthand account of what it is like to be a storm chaser from Eddy Weiss, director of Chasing4Life.

Central Community College-Grand Island will sponsor the free program from 7-10 p.m. July 8 at the College Park Auditorium.

The evening will feature breathtaking photography and unbelievable stories from this nationally known storm chaser and educator.

Attendees will have an opportunity to examine the Chasing4Life chase vehicles and have their questions answered by Weiss. Advanced registration is required.

Adult CPR/AED course July 8

COLUMBUS -- Prairie Valley Red Cross will offer an adult CPR/AED and first aid class from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. July 8 at the Red Cross building, 2905 23rd St.

This class meets OSHA requirements, and is designed to teach participants how to recognize and care for breathing, choking and cardiac emergencies as well as the use of an automated external defibrillator. The First Aid portion of the class teaches basic care for injuries or sudden illnesses until advanced medical care arrives. Pre-registration is encouraged.

Historical Society program July 13

COLUMBUS -- The Platte County Historical Society (PCHS) is presenting a program about “Nebraska Life Magazine” at 2 p.m. July 13 at the museum.

Chris Amundson, publisher, will be on-hand to share his stories from the 12 year history of the magazine. Amundson, originally from Norfolk, is a graduate of Wayne State College.

Free admission to PCHS members and $3 for non-members.
