Dog sought that bit child Sunday
COLUMBUS -- City animal control workers are looking for a black dog that bit a child about 9:20 p.m. Sunday in the area of the 2900 block of 25th Street.
The Columbus Animal Control Department is asking for public assistance in finding the small to medium-sized dog with a long snout and medium-length black fur, said Jeannie Warnke, lead animal control officer.
Warnke said workers are attempting to contact the dog’s owner to verify the animal’s rabies vaccination. Without the documentation, the child will be undergoing immunization against the rabies virus.

Gem, Mineral meeting June 3
SCHUYLER -- The Loup Valley Gem and Mineral Club will meet at 7:30 p.m. June 3 at the Schuyler Museum, 322 E. 11th St.
Don Gless will be honored for his contributions to Nebraska mineralogy and paleontology. The program will be a video on mountain formation.
The public is invited.
Nutrition program starts Thursday
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus Senior Center will participate in the 2008 Nebraska Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program.
To be eligible for this program, participants must meet categorical and income eligibility requirements: 60 years or older; single household gross income not to exceed $19,240 or two-person household gross income not to exceed $25,900.
Coupons in the amount of $48 per household will be issued for the season to be used June 1 through Oct. 31, redeemable only in Nebraska at farmers’ markets, roadside stands, directly from the farmer’s operation, or from a community-supported agriculture operation or from approved vendors. A required orientation, eligibility confirmation and coupon distribution is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the Columbus Senior Center.

Antique appraisal fundraiser Friday
DAVID CITY -- An antique appraisal fundraiser for St. Joseph’s Villa is set for 4-7 p.m. Friday at St. Mary’s School gymnasium in David City.
Tom Bassett from Lincoln will conduct appraisals of your antique items. Bassett regularly conducts appraisals for a number of banks, law firms, teaches at Southeast Community College, is a past president of the Lincoln Coin Club, the Nebraska Numismatic Association and a longtime member of the New England Appraisers Association.
An all-you-can-eat spaghetti meal and bake sale also will be available. Funds raised will help support the neighborhoods developed within the Villa to create a friendly environment for the elders to live and thrive. Security will be provided for items. Bring photos of large items, including measurements.

Red Cross hosting CPR Friday
COLUMBUS -- In recognition of National CPR/AED week June 1-7, the Prairie Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross is hosting CPR Friday.
The 90-minute workshop will address the basics of CPR. This class is for all ages and is a non-certification class. A donation of $5 is requested to cover expenses. The goal is to train 100 people.
There are four sessions to choose from: 9-10:30 a.m.; 10:30 a.m.-noon; 1-2:30 p.m.; 2:30-4 p.m. The workshop will be held at the American Red Cross, 2905 23rd St.

No meeting Sunday at museum
COLUMBUS -- The Platte County Historical Society (PCHS) will not be having a program meeting at the museum Sunday.
The public is encouraged to attend the Loup Power District 75th Anniversary celebration and open house at the Powerhouse on that day from noon-5 p.m. A special ceremony will be held at 2 p.m. along with ice cream, cake, cookies and family activities throughout the afternoon.
KLIR radio will be giving updates on the Loup Canal Flag Relay by Loup employees and retirees from 8 a.m.-2 p.m.
The next PCHS Museum Program will be July13. The date was changed due to the July 4 holiday weekend.
Camp Luther outing Sunday
SCHUYLER -- Camp Luther is hosting its annual picnic and quilt auction Sunday.
The camp grounds opening at 1 p.m. Tours, games and other activities will run from 1-3:30 p.m., with the quilt auction to begin at 4 p.m. Food will be served from 3-5 p.m., and closing devotions are set to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Auction items will include quilts, antique tractor, bicycles, pool table and much more. Menu will include roast pork, hot dogs, potato salad, slaw and drinks.
Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children, and under 5 years are free. All proceeds from this event will go toward helping provide financial assistance for summer campers. Quilt auction proceeds are supplemented by Thrivent Chapters from throughout the Nebraska District.
