Linda wants to know: Is spring finally here?

Monday, May 19, 2008 - 10:20:54 pm CDT

Is it safe to assume that spring is officially here?

It sure feels like it … and looks like it too. There are so many tulips, lilacs and trees in bloom right now, Columbus looks beautiful. And it’s nice to smell fresh cut grass again.

Not being familiar with a real winter, I wasn’t sure what to expect this past year. I’ve heard it was a long one this time, and I’ve found comfort in the frustration of native Nebraskans over the extended winter season.

It’s nice to know that people who are used to that sort of thing felt the same way I did.

The garden centers are buzzing with activity now. I remember wanting to buy plants back in February and waiting impatiently for the annuals to arrive. I was spoiled in Arizona with the mild winters -- that’s when everyone planted.

There you would take the summers off from working in the garden, plants would die down, and you’d start thinking about what you would plant in the fall when temperatures dropped again.

Since there are four real seasons here, I’m at a loss as to what, where and when to plant things. I’m learning about gardening all over again.

Shortly after moving here last June I bought several lilacs, hydrangeas, lily of the valley and peonies (favorites I couldn’t grow in Phoenix). I tried every year to convince them they would like it in Phoenix … and every year I would watch them shrivel into crispy versions of their former selves.

Friends of mine have already harvested their first crop of tomatoes -– the next crop will be “sun dried” on the vine! They were expecting a temperature of 108 degrees over the past weekend -– yikes! (But, it is a dry heat).

As gardening is one of my favorite hobbies, I’m expecting a great season of planting; enjoying familiar favorites and discovering new ones.

Have any tips or hints for me?

There is no Spring in Nebraska. You got your winter, then your blazing hot and humid summer and then you absolutely gorgeous autumn. Get used to it.

Oh i just love the spring time here. I don't have a green thumb, therfore have no tips or hint.. but I will be learning soon! Right now, with no humidity, its so nice to be able to sit out on a porch swing after working in the yard and enjoy the weather without feeling like melting! So I hope whatever you plant whenever, enjoy the spring...its a good time to get to know your neighbors while on a stroll through your neighborhood.

Try Bluebird Nursery. They have a huge selection and mainly carry items that will grow in Nebraska.

My favorite for large tomatoes is Better Boy. You might also try some loose leaf lettuce and some radishes. These are early crops that you plant in spring...and fall (they do poorly in the heat of summer)

Enjoy learning about the fun of gardening in NE!

Yes spring has come & gone. Now the kids are out of school & it won't be long it will be 98 & humid. You should really get underground sprinklers if you don't already have them. It's gonna get real hot & dry soon. Bye now

There's an old saying about Nebraska weather: "If you don't like the weather, wait a minute."

If you happen to step outside today, you'll notice that you missed the one day of spring here, and now it's the middle of summer. Time to hit the pool!

About this blog ...

Linda Briley is a new resident in the community, and we thought it would be fun and interesting for her to share her perspectives as she and her family settled in to their new life.

We moved here from a suburb of Phoenix (Gilbert) last summer, and we made it through our first real winter ever! Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I expected, so I consider that a major success.

My daughter is a first grader at Emerson, along with her younger brother who is in kindergarten. They have adjusted well to the move and quickly made friends. We can tell already that the academic standards seem higher here than where we lived in Arizona. Our daughter has had to catch up a bit, and our son seems further along than our daughter was at the same time last year.

I look forward to getting to know Columbus and you better in the weeks and months ahead. I hope you find my points of view interesting and thought provoking and share your thoughts with me about life in Columbus.

Life here is significantly different from the one we left behind, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it as the weeks and months go by.

Linda
