CHS to present concert Tuesday
COLUMBUS -- The Columbus High School Music Department will present their final concert of the year at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Frankfurt Square.
“Jazz on the Square” will feature the Columbus High School’s New World Singers and Jazz Band. Both groups have performed across the Midwest, and recently returned from a performance at the Northern Colorado Jazz Festival in Greeley, Col.
Those attending may wish to bring a lawn chair or blanket. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the high school auditorium.

PrairieLand to meet Tuesday
MADISON -- The PrairieLand Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Council will hold its next meeting at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the RC&D office in Madison.
The guest speaker will be Dan Gillespie from Meadow Grove. Gillespie, the area no-till specialist, will present information on continuous no-till techniques and cover crops.
The possibility of involving additional area schools in water testing, similar to the Newman Grove High School project, will be discussed along with project plans and funding options for the proposed program.
Current project updates will be provided regarding Highway 14, the Shell Creek Watershed Improvement Group, recycling grants, Norfolk Riverwalk, Nebraska Continuous No-till, tourism and a variety of other active and potential projects.
The PrairieLand RC&D Council promotes rural development in Boone, Nance, Madison, Platte, Stanton and Colfax counties.
Duncan school open house Tuesday
DUNCAN -- Duncan Elementary patrons will be hosting a community open house from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.
There will be a Sloppy Joe supper served starting at 6 p.m. and continuing until the food runs out. The school will be open for tours, and people can look at yearbooks, photos and other items that will be on display.
There will be a raffle for a refrigerator, microwave, digital camera and fog machine with the proceeds going to the Duncan Scholarship Fund. The evening also will feature a softball challenge between the kids and adults.
Summer school classes offered
COLUMBUS -- Summer school classes for Columbus and the surrounding area high schools will be held at Lakeview High School from May 29 through June 25.
Students who have failed are eligible to take up to three semester courses in the following areas: general math, psychology, English 9, 10, 11, 12, general science or biology, and social studies which includes American history, American government and world history.
Credit approval must be cleared with your school’s administration. Each session is equivalent to one semester and the sessions will run from 8 -10:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m., and 1:45-4:15 p.m. Class will be filled on a “first come, first served” basis.

Jerry Meyer farewell Tuesday
COLUMBUS -- The Andrew Jackson Higgins Memorial Committee is planning a farewell party for LTC Jerry Meyer from 7-9 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 84.
Meyer, who will be making remarks at 8:30 p.m., will be moving to Lincoln with his family at the end of the month.
The event is open to the public.
Click It Or Ticket program begins
COLUMBUS -- Columbus Police Department will be among the law enforcement agencies participating in the Click It Or Ticket seat belt safety campaign today through June 1.
The most recent statistics from the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety report that in 2006 40 teens died in crashes and 1,228 teens were seriously injured.
“Teenagers between 15 and 19 years of age are more likely to be in a motor vehicle accident than any other age group,’’ Columbus Officer Jeremy Zywiec said.
Overtime enforcement for the seat belt campaign is funded by a grant from the state office of highway safety.
Hartman Post 84 concert Wednesday
COLUMBUS -- The American Legion Hartman Post 84 Legacy Scholarship Fund Committee is presenting a fundraiser for the American Legion Legacy Scholarship Fund.
Part of the local fundraising efforts includes a concert by country singer Michael Peterson, who has been performing concerts in several states for “The My Real Life Tour,” which raises money for the Legacy Fund.
Peterson will be performing at 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Nantkes Performing Arts Center at Columbus High School.
The public is invited to attend the concert and give free-will donations.
