Can Kleeb ride the young change wave?

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - 12:49:58 am CDT

Across the nation voters are calling for change. Mike Johanns came straight from George Bush's cabinet. Can Scott Klebb take advantage of that? What happens to Johanns if his former boss zaps farm subsidies? Or, is this a "true red" political state?

More Obama-esque leadership.

Kleeb has no chance. He offers nothing but words with no plan and no way of funding anything. He is just another empty suit with hope and change. the only change will be higher taxes and theere is no hope for him.

There might be an indication from this Nebraska Primary, that the "old" candidates (Over the Hillary, Raimondo, Johanns, etc.)may be shunted aside in this Novembers election hope for a better tomorrow.

In the two years since voters "changed" control of Congress into the democrat's hands, the dems have turned the best economy in 50 years into a disaster.

And the dems really think their 17% approval rating is going to save them?

Dear Mr. John K,

Is that your real name? Or is it a pseudonym for Karl Rove? Are you serious when you state,"In the two years since voters "changed" control of Congress into the democrat's hands, the dems have turned the best economy in 50 years into a disaster."??? Serious students of government know that it takes years for policy/legislative change to show their affect. So what you believe, and would like others to believe is that all of the 'good work' Republicans have done during most of the last 28 years has been undone by the Democrats in just 1.5 years??? Yes, we are in an economic disater...but it is thanks to the Republicans that have added 8 trillion dollars to our National Debt since 1981 (Reagan, Bush I, and Bush II, for a total of 19.5 years). And, Congress was in control of both the Senate and the House during the last 27 years. So, Mr. Republican...look at yourself in the mirror and you will see whom is to blame for the mess we are in. And, thanks a lot!!

Outwesterner, you're probably one of the same people who gave Clinton all the credit for the booming economy of the 90's, when in reality it was created by the 80's economic policies of Reagan.

To: outwesterner. I don't know where you get this 28 years stuff. I'm not sticking up for the Republican controlled Congress but it wasn't until 1995 that the Republicans had control of Congress. The Democrats had control of the House from 1955 to 1995 and the same with the Senate other then the period between 1981 to 1987. That includes a period during the Carter years of one of the worst recessions in US history. I am of the opinion that both parties are so nearsighted and only looking to the next election that other then some issues that are such firestorms that it's not likely that anything will change much (abortion, guns, gay marriage, etc...) there really isn't much difference between the parties and they both pretty much suck.

If Kleeb was running in any state other than this one, he might have a chance. Sam, that's your opinion, but I think that this shows that more then likely the reason is that more often then not the Democratic candidate isn't the better candidate. alfrif-Just one thing the Democratic party will do to better America? For a start, there's bringing our troops home. Then there's making health care more affordable and accessible. and changing the culture of greed and corruption.

Also, you need to get off this same old tired whine about Democrats raising your taxes. The current administration has spent money like a drunken sailor and created the largest deficit in history. Isn't it just a little hypocritical using the same old "tax and spend" whine against Democrats when Republicans just spend and pass the bill on to someone else?

I used to be a Republican until I opened my eyes to what the GOP was doing. I don't really consider myself a Democrat either, but that party is more in line with my principles and beliefs than the Republican party is.

The rest of us productive tax payers will see up to a 20% increase in our health care payments.

To John K-

You truely believe that Bush created one of the best economic booms this country has seen. Unbelievable! Did Rush tell you that, or maybe Sean Hannity, or FOX News?

Here is a question I want any GOP supoprter to answer for me. If you run a business that creates a deficit do you think that business is being run sucessfully? Do you think that you are a strong business? Are you creating jobs and stimulting the economny? NO, you are NOT. So, since the Bush administration has caused the largest deficit in American history, you GOP supporters still think that this economy is strong? You can't run a business like that, what makes you think you can run a country like that and expect the economy to flourish.

During the Clinton years we had large amounts of growth and economic strengh. Why, because Clinton paid for things as we went, and that had a huge part of it. In fact, we had the largest surplus we ever had, and Americans had money in there pockets. And dont thank Reagan or Bush's father for that. Deficit spendind does nothing good for the economy.

The only thing the GOP has done is put us in a false war, caused deficit spending, and dwindled America's support around the world. If I were a republican I would crawl in a hole and hide! What good have they done for us! Someone please tell me, I am still trying to figure out what the last 8-years have gotten me.

The only way to have and retain "affordable health care" (IMO) is for the government to cap health care costs. Do you want the government to tell health care providers (doctors, nurses, hospitals) what they can charge? If that were the case, we'd soon have a more severe shortage of health care professionals.
MeMyselfAndI
May 17, 2008 1:11 PM
To: Nick. The strong economy of the 90's had little to do with Clinton. First of all the economy was recovering before Clinton was in office. I'm not giving credit to Bush Sr. either. The boom in the economy in the 90's came from the irresponsible lending and credit practices by the financial institutions, banks and credit card companies. There was such a boom because the nation was buying beyond their means on credit that they shouldn't have been given. This caught up with everyone in the new millenium and now we are all paying for it and if the Federal Chairman and the Democratic
Congress try to bail everyone out, it will just show that the Dems learned nothing from their S&L buy out in the late 80's and early 90's which caused the large budget defecits of Bush Sr's term.
Sam
May 17, 2008 4:49 PM
So only "productive" taxpayers deserve affordable health care, "MeMyselfandI"? I happen to think that one of the functions of government should be to assist those in need, because when government helps the needy and unfortunate then our health care costs ACROSS THE BOARD go down. The claim that we will see a 20% increase in our health care costs is a scare tactic dreamed up by the Republican party and the insurance lobbyists who have them in their pockets.
MeMyselfAndI
May 17, 2008 11:26 PM
Sam, it isn't a scare tactic. Do some research on any other country with government health care, and find out why they are over taxed and still want to come here for treatment. Remember the food lines in Soviet Russia? Now apply that to health care, even if it isn't as serious. How long to you want to have to wait for the government to decide you should get the treatment you need. Better hope you don't have another heart attack.
MeMyselfAndI
May 17, 2008 11:32 PM
Oh yea, Sam as for your comment on only productive members getting affordable health care, no that's not my position, but if someone else doesn't have good health care, why should I lose mine to help them? That isn't the way our government was set up, sorry. You're rights to have things stop when they enfringe on my rights to what I have. If you having cheep health care, because you're in a bad situation, takes away from what I already have, it's an abomeration of the American way of life. Your rights stop when they take away from mine. Sorry. Life isn't fair, nobody said it was when the Constitution was written. If you want something "fair", wait until July and go to Ag park.

So Clinton paid for things as he went? Wow, I thought LSD was a thing of the past but you must have a load of it at your disposal. He took down our American forces to help pay for things at a cost of 9/11 and hundreds of victims as well as the other terrorist attacks. He was a wieny and did not get Osama when he could have because he says he feared for loss of life....... what do you call 9/11? Thank God we had a president that truly reacted after 9/11, if wieny Gore had been in there he would still be trying to teach the terrorists how to use his internet so he could set up tea and cookies dates to "work everything out". Clinton was minor compared to what Obama has planned if he gets in. Get ready for the end folks if he does. He is stupid enough to think he has the answerss by talking to the terrorists? The ONLY thing they understand is strength on our end, they hope with everything they have that Obama gets in because then they do too. Mark my words and I wish I were wrong.

May 18, 2008 10:53 PM
To talk the talk walk the walk: Why are you war mongering? War begets war, peace begets peace, helping your fellow man begets helping yourself. Why do you worry about what you might lose, if what you might gain has better rewards? Clinton had a good economy... oh no, that never happened, lets say Reagan did it. Can't give the Democrats any credit here. The credit goes to the G.O.P. and take the credit they will, not only the credit for a strong economy, but the debt that comes by using that credit card. Getting back on topic, Kleeb has an old worn mantra that he has kept with him since his first run. You can argue all you want about how bad his ideas may be, but compare them to what you have now... today. Are you saying 2 years (When the reps controlled congress)ago things were different? Have you gotten your government welfare check.... oops, I mean stimulus check yet? Is the economy stimulating yet? Do you know what those checks are going to cost YOU tomorrow? Did you spend it on BS or did you pain down debt/bills/rising expenses? Which do YOU think would be better at stimulating the economy, and which do YOU think most Americans did/plan to do with it? Just one of many many errors charged onto the credit card of DEBT by the GOP. According to Bush and Cheney, just last week, the economy is doing great. These are the representatives who are controlling your life now. Consumer spending is down and a recession is here ( in some peoples view) because confidence in the system is down. Confidence in the leaders is low. Sometimes it takes a bigger man to put down his weapon and talk to his enemy. Someone has to make the first move. Something has to give. The G.O.P.'s way is one of warmongering... fight them, kill them.... kill who? Terrorist? The 9/11 planners? Get a clue about not what we are fighting for, but who we should be fighting. I myself am in favor of pulling out the troops... not pull them out and send them home, pull them out and send them on a real mission. To actually go after, in large force, the ones who caused 9/11. I really don't see that happening here.
For the cost we are wasting there, we could have used that same money to secure our borders here. 100,000+ troops stationed all over the borders of the U.S. sure sounds alot more secure to me then sending them off to play referee in a civil war created by the U.S. in the first place. Insurgents are not terrorists. Blame Clinton for letting Osama get away, but blame Bush for shooting in the wrong direction. He gets that from Cheney. Kleeb might just be an underdog minor player in this whole game, and will more then likely lose in the generals due to the war mongering GOP majority that is Nebraska, but come November, the more intelligent side will once again, stand up to the call, fix our budget, fix our retirement nest eggs, fix our home prices, fix our health care, and fix alot of the hatred towards us in the world. The only thing about all this fixing that the sides are gonna do, is one is gonna put the bill for the repair job on a credit card, the other side will make payment in full. The G.O.P. slogan of "FREEDOM ISN'T FREE" can still fly, but along side it, should also read "NEITHER IS FIXING WHAT IS BROKEN". Your fearful of your taxes being raised, deal with it. Viaducts don't get built with stimulus checks. It's the price of progress. Perhaps that is why the Democratic party prefers to be called "PROGRESSIVES" not Liberals. Most Liberals just happen to be Democrats. There is a difference you know. These are called swing voters. The G.O.P. side has them too. If they opened their eyes a bit more, they would see what their last vote has gotten them. Don't vote for Kleeb if you don't like his ideas, fine, but then don't turn around and say the current ideas have benefited you either. Myself I'd rather try a different path if the one I'm on now keeps getting worse each step. Peace !!

Phreak,

Now that you're hopefully done lecturing us about the stimulus checks, can you tell us what you did with yours? Did you tear it up? Did you send it right back to Uncle Sam?

I'm sure even the more intelligent among us are wondering if you practice what you preach.

The other side of the deficit ledger is called "spending". Bush is roundly criticized for running up the deficit (even after the devastating economic blows of Katrina and 9/11) but in the very next breath, his most ardent critics are jumping on him for not spending enough on their favorite government programs.

We can't have it both ways.

Time to put Uncle Sam on a diet I say!

I'm a solid conservative voter and not afraid to admit it. I don't expect others to pay my way and I sure as hell won't be voting for a President who looks to racist preachers and the European Union for guidance.

Hmmm, all this talk about deficits. I seem to remember a great S-CHIP debate a a coupla years back. The Dems wanted to increase spending on it (which would a)increase the deficit or b)reduce the deficit?). Bush vetoed it. The Dem majority was not able to override his veto.

So, I take it this is an example of how the Dems are working to reduce the deficit that we're told they're so concerned about?????????????

If McCain or some other GOP presidential candidate was attending and financially supporting a church with an openly racist preacher, you damn betcha you'd care. It just MAY point to how the candidate views his fellow Americans. It just MAY point to how the inner man actually thinks.

Birds of a feather flock together.

The overwhelming majority of people (not to mention virtually all intelligence agencies) in the US and indeed throughout the world believed Iraq had WMD's before we went in. Now, with the benefit of 20/20 hindsight, liars and Dems are wagging their fingers and yelling "I told you so! I knew there weren't any WMD's!"

Get rid of the lunatic fringes from both parties and maybe something can get done in this country. If some of the moderates from both sides of the aisle would start a new party, I'd listen.

Blaming each party for the failures of past administrations is a never-ending debate. I'd rather watch my dog chase his tail. Your ceaseless bickering here is a joke.

Is your tax dollars and deaths of over 3000 Americans the answer Tim is no.
Racking up a debt that can not be paid off and marching around the world with no regard for what we do will tear this country apart.
The point you miss on the WMDs was the fact the President had the info saying there was none and he told us they were there anyway. Dont say he diddnt because he did it was from UN inspectors. He flat out lied us into a war much like Vietnam.
Also, you cant reduce spending right now with a war going on with out cutting federal programs which effect everyone rich or poor. We need to get out of Iraq and put that millions of dollars everyday to better use. Also, GOP radicals will call any reduction in spending in Iraq unpatriotic or say we are not supporting our troops. Supporting our troops is bringing them home as soon as possible.

It is not supporting the troops, it is keeping us safe. Get a grip, FREEDOM IS NOT FREE AND IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE WITH ALL OF THE TERRORISTS WE LET RUN FREE IN OUR COUNTRY BECAUSE SLICK WILLY FELT EVERYONE'S PAIN (WHILE FEELING VERY GOOD WITH MONICA'S HELP INSTEAD OF MINDING THE CHICKEN COOP).

Dryice: I agree with much of what you said but I suggest you check your math. Our National Debt and deficit is much more as a percent of GDP than 35 years ago. You are quoting a Rebublican myth used to justify their out of control spending.

Tim, Tim, Tim

When will you understand it takes a super majority to overcome a veto and a filabuster. The Democratic Party does not have a super majority. In other words, the problem with Congress is there is not enough Democrats to actually get control. Give us enough Democrats and see what a wonderful world we will have.

When will you understand that the Dems are no better at spending less than the current crop of Reps? Majority or no majority, it makes no difference, they love to spend and have historically spent us into debt long before Bush became President.

You guys are crying about the deficit while the Dems are doing their part to run it up (as the S-chip example clearly demonstrates) and then screaming at Bush when he vetoes their increased spending. Or does only GOP spending increase the budget deficit?

What do you want? Less debt or more spending? Looks to me like you guys just want to scream at Bush, regardless of how inconsistent it appears.

Good Guy,

Can you provide info when John McCain donated money to Pat Robertson's church? And info as to how he is accepting Robertson's support? Is Robertson campaigning for him in an official capacity? Is McCain calling on him for guidance? Spiritual or otherwise? Do you REALLY expect Robertson to support Clinton or Obama?

Let's not forget that Obama donated $22K to Wright's church while Wright was ranting about how America invented the AIDS virus to destroy the black race. I know that if I was a member of a church that had such drivel proffered by that church's minister, I'd have absolutely no trouble finding my way to the door and leaving that church... for good. And I sure as hell wouldn't donate $22 to them, let alone $22K. Isn't Obama still a member of Wright's church?

Spin it as you like.

Since I am aware of Obama's voting record while in the Illinois Senate and while a US Senator, where he was easily ranked in the top 5 "most liberal" Senators, is more than info enough for me. I know where the man stands on the issues.

The Reverend Wright brouhaha is secondary to Obama's positions on key issues for me. But still it's fun to point out that Obama's imperfections just to see how it's spun by his supporters.

And for what it's worth, I voted for Alan Keyes in the 2000 primary. Bush wasn't my guy then but he's been the best choice since then unfortunately.

Back to WMD's. Top Dems were telling us that Saddam had WMD's LONG before Bush became President.

Or is that another Bush lie?

It is not about keeping us safe any more than it is about your not learning where the caps lock key is on your computer. There were no terrorists in Iraq until we sent troops in under false pretenses. Now there are, thanks to the removal of Saddam and the de-Baathification of the government. We have actually created a terrorist haven there because of Bush's ineptitude. Obviously you are among the 28% minority that approves of the job Bush is doing.

Tim, Tim, Tim,

No, Obama is not still a member of Wright's church. Wright is retired and the Trintity United Church of Christ has a new minister.

Obama's strength and his flaw is that he overlooks the bad in people to find the good. He might even find some good in you, Tim. It is only a flaw only because it can opportunities for political attacks from opponents that are trying to hide from issues that actually matter. To suggest that Obama is a black racist is idiotic. He is as much white as he is black.

I feel sorry for you, Tim. You see you are wrong but too proud to admit it. Join us and change the world. We will accept even you.

Ron Paul is the only note worthy Republican worth voting for. Like the Clinton statement before. Republicans just aren't phased by the truth. Ron Paul could have been the Barak the Democrats wanted as well as the McCain the GOP wants all wrapped up into one package. It's to bad the News media swept him under the rug and called him a nut case. If he would have been the nominee for the repubs, he would have had my DEM vote easily over all the others.

Tim,

SCHIP was not a couple years ago, it was just over the last 6-8 months. And according to the Congressional Budget Office, that reviews the bills and determines costs, offsets, etc, the bill was paid for with cuts in other areas under the bill. Matter of fact, it project a few million extra left over at the end of the period the bill covered. Democrats set all that up under PAYGO. Democrats voted for it. Over 70% of the nation (including nearly 60% of Republicans) supported SCHIP expansion because working families that were making too much to qualify for Medicaid, but too poor to pay for their own insurance, were needing help for their children to be cared for. Bush vetoed it. Republicans have enough to uphold that veto - a veto proof minority signed a pledge to support Bush every time. Adrian Smith was one of them that signed on.

In the mean time, the correct the Alternative Minimum Tax, Democrats suggested cuts deductions for corporations, and small increases in the very upper levels of the tax code, to make sure the AMT loss in revenue was covered (something Hagel even said had to be done). Republicans stood together to defeat that bill and would only support one that did NOT find a way to be paid for. They have enough to filbuster and block bills, and they used that power. Result - billions added to the debt so the riches people in America can still get that 4th vacation home, rather than settling for free, and my children and grandchildren have to pay for it.

Just wanted to set the record straight for you there.

:) Nah, even good Saint Obama couldn't find any good in me Fred. I'm one of those independent minded hardass rightwingers who believes in the old fashioned ideals of self reliance and self determination. Hell, I'm so out of step I believe .gov should be a last resort, not a first resource. Imagine that!!! I go so far as to believe that people should be held responsible for their decisions!!

Pretty old fashioned I know but you know what? Along with my God and my guns, I still cling to those concepts because those ideals made America what it is... the greatest nation the world has ever known.

Thanks but no thanks, I can't join in your Leftist remodeling of America. Rand and Orwell warned me off that nonsense years ago.

I do sing a pretty mean version of Kumbaya though and am available for campfire singalongs.
