Is your glass half-empty or half full?

This week’s topic doesn’t really have anything to do with how Columbus differs from Arizona. As a matter of fact, I think it brings home the fact that people are generally the same no matter where you go.

There have been many great responses to the blogs over the past few weeks –- some of them quite entertaining, others rather pointed. And it seems there are a few people out there who aren’t too crazy about living in Columbus, or at least see a lot of room for improvement (aka: change). Change can be good, but remember, no place is perfect; and there will always be a trade-off.

Just back from my trip to Arizona, I am reminded that people can be happy or unhappy regardless of the size, location or average temperature where they live, shopping venues, choice of entertainment, or cost of living they deal with.

The bottom line is that you can choose how you live wherever life takes you.

It’s the question of whether your glass is half empty or half full. I tease a friend of mine that not only is her glass half empty, it has a continuous leak!

Columbus can’t offer everything to everybody, but it still has a lot to offer to those who look for it. This is a lovely community full of warm people, old-time charm and natural beauty. I’m not sure how long I’ll be here in Nebraska, but I do know that I want to get to know it while I can.

I would think that a more appropriate question is: how big is your glass? It is my experience that those who have a big glass are "almost full". Those who have a shot glass are "almost empty".

Fill your life and it will be fulfilling. It is much better to be the person making the decision than the one complaining about the decision. If you have never helped in making a decision that impacted others, you really shouldn't complain about those that do.

Hmmm... so pointing out there is a problem, stating the facts that support your thoughts and suggesting we need to work on resolving it........that is a glass half full outlook.

We need to work together on large issues, and one person, or even a small group of average people won't fix them. Voicing our opinions will help those persons/groups who, for whatever reason, can make a change....decide that change is needed.

Feeling life is awful because of these problems is where trouble lies...but voicing the thought that there are problems is the way change starts.

We need many types of people...Pollyannas, realists, dreamers, complainers...etc. Stating one side should change misses the point that without the diversity the whole entity decays.

My husband and I moved here almost 9 years ago. I was born in Columbus and my husband is from Denver. We lived over 30 years in Denver. As I was commuting to work one day while in Denver, I was calculating the amount of time I spent in the car going to and from work in one year. It ended up being 24 hours a day, 21 days of the year. I was spending nearly a month a year in my car. It was so nice to get back to the country, smell the fresh air and enjoy the 10 minute commute to work. If I feel the need for a big city, Omaha is big enough. My husband reminds me every time we get into the traffic and the rush of Omaha - Now what was the reason we moved??

your glass if half full when your happy. half emepty when your not. people make their own breaks. no one makes it easier for you. the harder you work and plan the fuller the glass. if you make zero attempt to succeed and have nothing your glass is half emepty

WOW suggests that voicing your concerns helps those responsible for change. To me that is called "just complaining." If you are not doing the actual work then whinging and complaining just slows down those who are doing the work.

As Vice President in a club of over 1,100 members, we built a new club. Less than 20 showed up for the meetings and work. Much more than that thought we should have done something different after completion. Its much easier to complain than do the work.

By definition are not all such glasses both half full and half empty? But, if you really want to see and experience some things. Live in several different states, territories and continents. Moving from Phoenix to Columbus is like moving from Columbus to Phoenix. Its just the other way around. If you take that perspective, you'll see that you haven't really moved at all.

Tim, May the Lord Bless you. I feel that when you are on the right path in life and happy with the direction you are taking weather it be a bit harder now and/or easier later. Your glass will never be empty even a little. So God Bless.

My glass is half empty, but on the bright side, it's the bottom half that is half empty.

About this blog



Linda Briley is a new resident in the community, and we thought it would be fun and interesting for her to share her perspectives as she and her family settled in to their new life.



We moved here from a suburb of Phoenix (Gilbert) last summer, and we made it through our first real winter ever! Honestly, it wasn’t as bad as I expected, so I consider that a major success.



My daughter is a first grader at Emerson, along with her younger brother who is in kindergarten. They have adjusted well to the move and quickly made friends. We can tell already that the academic standards seem higher here than where we lived in Arizona. Our daughter has had to catch up a bit, and our son seems further along than our daughter was at the same time last year.



I look forward to getting to know Columbus and you better in the weeks and months ahead. I hope you find my points of view interesting and thought provoking and share your thoughts with me about life in Columbus.



Life here is significantly different from the one we left behind, and I can’t wait to tell you all about it as the weeks and months go by.
