City digest CCC-C graduation ceremony today COLUMBUS -- David S. Finn, Caterpillar corporation’s product support manager for North America, will be the keynote speaker for the 38th annual commencement ceremonies today at Central Community College-Columbus. Finn, who has been with Caterpillar for 39 years, began as an engineer and has worked in Switzerland, Europe and Northern Ireland. He is a member of the Cat-Trimble Control Technologies Board of Directors and the marketing member of Caterpillar’s Engineering Succession Planning Group. He is a graduate of Oregon State University with a degree in mechanical engineering, is an active commercial helicopter pilot, and lives with his wife, Pat, near company headquarters in Peoria, Ill. Commencement will begin at 7 p.m. in the Physical Education Center. There will also be presentation of Faculty Member of the Year and Outstanding Alumni Awards. A reception will follow in the auxiliary gymnasium. County Democrats meeting May 15 COLUMBUS -- The Platte County Democrats will meet from 7-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 15, at the Columbus Public Library. Agenda items will include the upcoming County Convention and the State Convention. Anyone who is interested in attending the convention as a delegate is encouraged to attend this meeting that is open to the public. Reservations are not required. Crime Stoppers fundraiser week COLUMBUS -- Super Saver store is conducting a “roundup” fundraiser for Crime Stoppers from May 5-11. Customers can “round up” their grocery bill with the added change going to Crime Stoppers. Crime Stoppers provides reward money as incentive to people to turn criminals into law enforcement agencies. To report a crime, call 563-4000. Duncan school open house May 20 DUNCAN -- Duncan Elementary patrons will be hosting a community open house from 6-8 p.m. May 20. There will be a Sloppy Joe supper served starting at 6 p.m. and continuing until the food runs out. The school will be open for tours, and people can look at yearbooks, photos and other items that will be on display. There will be a raffle for a refrigerator, microwave, digital camera and fog machine with the proceeds going to the Duncan Scholarship Fund. The evening also will feature a softball challenge between the kids and adults. TierOne makes donation to SCC COLUMBUS -- Scotus Central Catholic High School received a $5,000 grant from the TierOne Foundation in support of the school’s Legacy Capital Campaign. The Legacy Campaign goals include: improvements to the school’s heating system, the addition of air conditioning for the first time to classrooms, remodeling of 50-year-old locker rooms and tuition assistance to students with financial need. The TierOne Charitable Foundation provides support to nonprofit organizations and scholarship assistance to colleges and universities in communities where their offices are located. Created in 2003, the Foundation has awarded more than $2 million in grants to deserving programs and organizations and continues to seek funding opportunities that strengthen and enrich our communities. Sign up for summer dance camp COLUMBUS -- Summer Dance Camp 2008 is planned for kids grades K-2 from 9-11:30 a.m. and grades 3-5 and 6-8 from 1-4 p.m. at North Park Elementary School June 16-19. Deadline to register for this camp is June 1. Cost of $40 per dancer includes a T-shirt. The camp will be instructed by Lynette's Dance Studio alumni and current Nebraska Wesleyan Dance Team members Jenna Davies and Angie Zulkoski (former Miss Columbus). No experience is required. National Day of Prayer on TV COLUMBUS -- Broadcast of the Stadium Event honoring the National Day of Prayer for the homebound may be seen on Columbus Cable Channel 13 at 4 p.m. Saturday and at 9 p.m. Sunday. Transfers station open Memorial Day COLUMBUS -- The City of Columbus’ transfer station yard waste site will be available to the public from 8-11:30 a.m. Memorial Day. The transfer station scale house will be available for licensed garbage Haulers only from 8-11:30 a.m. for solid waste disposal on Memorial Day Regular hours will resume at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday. Public meeting on special education COLUMBUS -- A meeting conducted by Columbus Public Schools will take place at Scotus Central Catholic High School at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, May 28. The purpose of the meeting will be to provide an opportunity for parents and representatives of nonpublic schools to participate in the development of a plan for providing special education services to children with disabilities who attend nonpublic schools and home schools which are within the Columbus Public Schools district for the 2008-2009 school year. Parents of a home-schooled child or a child attending a nonpublic school who has been or may be identified with a disability and attend a nonpublic school within the boundaries of Columbus Public Schools, are urged to attend. Youth Mission washing cars COLUMBUS -- Members of Youth Mission 2008 will be washing cars at the Pillen Building at 33rd Avenue and 25th Street, south of Pinnacle Bank, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. A car wash will cost $5. Proceeds will go for the summer youth mission trips to St. Louis, San Francisco and the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota. |
