O’NEILL -- The Scotus Central Catholic girls track and field teams had an almost perfect day at the B-4 district meet Thursday in O’Neill.

The Shamrocks will take 13 kids down to the state meet as the girls finished tied for second with Norfolk Catholic with 97 points, while the boys scored 59 points.

The boys once again were led by Taylor Suess and Josh Ryba in the discus. The Scotus duo went 1-2 as Suess won the event with a toss of 156 feet, 1 inch, while Ryba came in at 146-10.

Also qualifying for the boys were Jordan Janda, who took second in both the 100 and 200-meter runs at 11.0 and 22.7 seconds, respectively, and Pat McKay, finishing fourth in the 800 at 2:03.9. The two were also part of the 400 relay team with Kyle Christensen and Callen Schwank that finished second at 44.5.

“Things went about as perfect as they could for Scotus track,” Scotus boys coach Jeff Ohnoutka said. “In every race where we thought we could qualify for state, we did. Taylor and Josh once again had great days for us.”

Meanwhile, the Shamrock girls had three firsts in leading them to the runner-up tie. Kelli Schumacher took the triple jump with a leap of 35-11.75, while Kelli Korth won the 300 hurdles at 47.7. Schumacher was part of the winning 1,600 relay team with Monica Boeding, Ashley Paprocki and Amber Ewers that ran a 4:14.0 winning time.

Ewers, Boeding and Paprocki went 2-3-4 in the 200 to qualify as well. Ewers also finished second in the 100 at 12.3, while Schumacher also earned a berth in the long jump with a 15-5.25 for third. Also qualifying were Emily Jarecki, third in the 3,200 at 12:46.7, and Lexie Gutzmer, clearing 8-8 to take third in the pole vault. Korth, Ewers, Paprocki and Boeding finished second in the 400 relay with a 50.5.

Scotus girls coach Janet Tooley said it was a team effort for the runner-up finish as people who medaled but didn’t qualify were part of the success the Shamrocks had.

“I’m really proud of the kids today,” Tooley said. “Things went as we hoped, maybe better. The girls who didn’t qualify for state did give us some points as well as most of those girls had personal bests.”

Kaleb Christensen swept the 100 and 200 races to lead the Lakeview boys with times of 10.9 and 22.3, respectively. Also earning trips to state were Judd Went and Jeremy Schrieber. Went threw 50-6.25 for a second-place finish in the discus, while Jeremy Schreiber cleared 12-10 for a second-place finish in the pole vault.

Ashley Wurdeman is the lone Lakeview representative at the state meet, qualifying in two events. The senior finished second in the shot put with a 36-10.75 throw and second in the long jump with a 16-5.75 leap.

The Schuyler girls qualified four individuals. Kellie Wachal took the shot put at 39-6.25, while Sarah Wheeldon claimed the 400 with a 1:01.1 time. Wheeldon also earned a berth in the 800, taking second at 2:28.5, and Sarah Brichacek finished fourth in the 400 at 1:04.0.

Nathan Kracl led the Schuyler boys with a win in the shot put with a 52-6.25.

Boone Central will take three girls to the state meet. Halie Smith and Ashlynn Bader went 1-2 in the 3,200, finishing at 12:32.2 and 12:39.0, respectively. Megan Bygland earned trips in both the 100 and 300 hurdles, running at 16.2 and 48.6, respectively.
